.SYNOPSIS...Seasonably warm and dry conditions will persist
through early next week for inland areas. Coastal areas will
remain more seasonal with overnight cloudiness and afternoon
scattering.

.DISCUSSION...Low cloud has remained offshore for much of the day
today, with the coast seeing sunny skies through this afternoon. A
patch of stratus has developed early this afternoon just off the
Humboldt coast. This is forecast to move onshore again tonight, with
low cloud and patchy fog expected again tonight along the coastal
plain.
Latest WV satellite imagery is showing a cutoff upper low off to our
south, lumbering toward Point Conception, while a large but shallow
upper trough approaches the PNW. Local ridging over NWRN CA between
these two features has driven interior temps about 10 deg above
normal this afternoon. This local ridge is expected to break down as
the cutoff low and trough over the NEPAC progress eastward tonight.
Temps should moderate slightly over the weekend as this trough moves
onshore, then warm back up early next week as more aggressive upper
ridging builds in behind the trough Sunday night.
Overall, this means warm and dry weather is forecast to continue
into the weekend, while coastal temperatures will remain seasonal
through the weekend. Increasing northerly winds across the coastal
waters will help promote stratus development and patchy fog for
isolated areas of the north coast.
Moving into early next week, high pressure will amplify leading to
another round of hot and dry weather across the interior valleys.
Inland temperatures could approach 100 degrees on Monday and
Tuesday. Additionally, overnight RH recoveries will be poor across
area ridges. Offshore flow is expected to develop early next week as
this high builds over the Great Basin, which could bring coastal
temperatures near 70 degrees. Unlike the last offshore event, this
one will lack deep layer easterlies and marine air may hinder the
warming for the immediate coast.
Looking into the very long range, ensembles are showing a decreasing
500 mb height trend for late next week with cluster analysis
indicating an upper level trough to enter the pattern. But both are
also showing large spread and model variability this far in advance,
which is typical for this time of year. Thus, impactful rain for
northwest California is still uncertain but it does tell us the
atmosphere is wanting to switch up the pattern.

.AVIATION...Weather conditions across the region proved most favorable
for aviation today. At the Coast, elevated winds and offshore
flow pushed stratus well offshore. A bubble low over CEC kept
winds mostly light and variable. However, haze advection "briefly"
moved over ACV, but any impact was negligible. Inland areas
remained VFR. Overnight...model data is forecasting the marine
stratus and fog to moved over the coastal shores and lower the TAF
sites down to LIFR/IFR Saturday morning. /TA

.MARINE...Significant wave heights are forecast to exceed 12 feet in
the outer waters by Saturday amidst northerly short period waves and
a secondary pulse of energy from a mid-period NW swell. Small craft
conditions with 10 to 12 foot waves and 25 to 30 knot gusts are
expected to persist through the weekend. Mid-range models are
beginning to identify possible gales and hazardous sea conditions
Sunday into Monday as the nearshore pressure gradient tightens.
Details are still uncertain as to the strength and coverage of these
winds, but at the very least small craft conditions will prevail
through early next week as wave heights remain above 10 feet,
especially in the outer waters.
