AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION

.SYNOPSIS...Drier weather with mild temperatures are anticipated for
today. An unsettled weather pattern will arrive by mid to late this
week with heavy rainfall, mountain snow, and strong gusty winds.
Below average temperatures are likely for the end of the week and
into the weekend.

.DISCUSSION...A brief hiatus in precipitation is expected to
continue throughout today as high pressure continues to build into
the area promoting drier weather conditions. Also, southerly
winds will start to increase over the ridges, today, as a
shortwave moves by to the northwest of the area. Gusts of 20 to 30
mph are possible over the higher terrain of Humboldt and Del
Norte counties. These elevated winds will diminish overnight.
The increased winds and drying airmass may aid in diminishing the
coverage of fog in the valleys. However, valleys in Trinity
County will likely still see fog. Another unseasonably warm day
can be expected for today. Cloudiness will increase throughout
today as the main trough approaches our area.

This main trough will continue to march toward Northwest California.
A more intense atmospheric river associated with the trough will
bring barrages of rain and stronger winds that will begin
tomorrow night and last into the end of the work week. Tomorrow
afternoon, winds start to pick up in earnest ahead of this main
system. Winds will continue to strengthen tomorrow night and are
expected to peak early Wednesday. Wednesday still seems to be the
most intense day for rainfall and winds.

Strong southerly winds at 45 to 75 kts aloft from a coastal jet
are anticipated to mix down and bring south to southeast winds
gusting from 40 to 60 MPH across the region. NBM probabilities
indicate that there is a 50 to 90% chance of widespread gusts of
45 MPH or greater tomorrow night and into Wednesday. A high wind
watch has been issued for the upper elevations of Humboldt and Del
Norte counties along with the Humboldt County Coast. The NBM is
showing over an 80 percent chance of wind gusts over 70 mph on the
ridges of Humboldt and Del Norte counties early Wednesday
morning. Along the lower elevation coastal areas gusts there is a
70 percent chance of gusts over 45 mph.

The next significant hazard with this system will be the rainfall.
This trough will set up an Atmospheric River event and bring
moderate to heavy rainfall late tomorrow night through Thursday
with lingering showers through Friday. Flooding will be likely. For
more information on this, see the hydrology section below.

Snow levels are expected to be high with this main section of the
system at 7,000 to 8,000 feet. By late Wednesday and into the end of
the week, snow levels are expected to lower to around 4500-5500 feet
as this upper level trough moves through and brings cold air aloft.
The big question is how quickly will they fall and how much
precipitation is lingering Wednesday night and Thursday. In general,
it looks like precipitation will be light, but an inch or so of snow
is still possible below 4,000 feet. Colder air will settle into the
region and persist into the weekend. Snow levels are anticipated to
continue to fall to potentially 1500 to 2500 feet by the weekend.
Mountain snow for mostly Trinity County is expected with the potential
for snow impacts along Scott Mountain Pass on HWY 3.

.AVIATION...Fog has settled into UKI this morning and will persist
beyond sunrise a few hours before mixing out. Southeast winds will
increase today as a front clips the region, with periods of gusts.
Some low end low level wind shear will enter later this morning,
mainly at ACV through the afternoon. Otherwise VFR conditions will
take hold until tonight when some light rain may contribute to MVFR
conditions.

.MARINE...Southerly winds will trend up throughout the day, nearing
25 kts in the outer waters this afternoon as a front clips the area.
Another mid period westerly will also fill in this afternoon,
reaching near 11 feet late tonight. There will only be a very brief
lull in winds tonight before a significant increase in southerly
winds begin.

A strong, 961 mb Pacific low will push NE on Tuesday and southerly
winds will quickly increase in response. Gale conditions will begin
Tuesday morning in the outers. Winds will proceed to become very
strong by Tuesday afternoon when Storm conditions will begin. The
robust 925 mb low level jet will reach 70 to 75 kts, and this will
support sustained surface winds of 40 to 45 kts and some
concentrated gusts nearing 60 kts. This caliber of winds will be
mainly focused in the Outer zones, particularly north in 470, but
widespread high-end Gale to Storm gusts and treacherous conditions
will enter all zones into Wednesday. Steep and hazardous wind driven
seas will reach 17 to 19 feet at their peak in the outer zones. As
winds begin to ease, a large post frontal swell will begin moving
late Wednesday. peaking into Thursday morning at 16 to 18 feet, with
20 feet possible given the energy of this system.

.HYDROLOGY...The Climate Prediction Center has highlighted above
normal precipitation for Northwest California with this system.
Rain looks to start as early as tomorrow afternoon, but the
significant rain is expected to hold off until overnight tomorrow
and into the early hours of Wednesday. The risk for flooding will
increase, especially if the boundary slows or stalls over the
area. The rainfall amounts will vary significantly across the area
due to the strong winds interacting with the mountains. Overall
this system is expected to bring widespread 3 to 5 inches of rain
with up to 10 inches possible in the King Range from late
tomorrow night through early morning Friday. The Navarro and the
Russian rivers are expected to reach flood stage. The Eel at
Fernbridge, also, has a chance of reaching flood stage. The bigger
hazard will likely be extensive small stream flooding. Much of
the rain is expected to fall in a 12 to 18 hour period tomorrow
night and Wednesday.
