Discussion:

Weak short-wave trough axis is moving across the easter Plains this
afternoon with surface cyclone centered over the North Dakota-
Manitoba border. A warm front extends southward from this and has
been moving eastward. However, the passage of it will be during the
overnight hours and with the fresh snowpack across the ground, will
not see any appreciable increase in temperatures. Weak convergence
along the IA-MO stateline may produce light snow later this evening
as there is some moisture within a shallow DGZ. Model soundings from
CAM output across the north shows a dry layer around 800mb though.
Therefore with a shallow DGZ and drier air just above the surface,
snow will be light, generally just trace amounts detected. Perhaps a
few areas could see up to a tenth of an inch. Surface pressure falls
with the passage of this system will lead to a stronger pressure
gradient, allowing for wind gusts between 15 and 20 MPH to continue
through this evening. This will send wind chill values tonight into
Thursday morning into the single digits across most of the area.

During the early morning hours of Thursday, a PV anomaly and
associated H5 trough ejects eastward out of the Rockies promoting
mid-level height falls through most of the morning and afternoon.
The jet streak enters the base of the trough and it starts to
develop a negative tilt to its axis, promoting stronger dCVA into
the TX/OK Panhandle Region. In response, surface cyclone continues
to deepen and pushes warmer airmass up to about the Interstate 70
corridor by Thursday afternoon. Most of the deterministic model
solutions are in agreement on a strong surface cyclone pushing
through that by the evening hours will bring precipitation. Amongst
ensemble suites and members of the NBM, probabilities for over
measurable precipitation are over 95 percent. While there is not
much discrepancy over the track of the storm, the main forecast
challenge is determining how much moisture gets pushed up with this
system, and then how much gets wrapped into the backside with this
system. Currently, GEFS and other ensemble means have a stripe of
QPF between 0.30 and 0.45 inches across our north, with a secondary
axis between Henry and Cooper Counties in out southeast between 0.30
and 0.40 inches. For counties in the central part of our forecast
area, seems to be bit less with the potential for a dry slot to work
its way in across the Interstate 70 corridor. The 12z NAM solution
comes in very dry for central Missouri, while the GFS/ECMWF still
hold onto a few tenths of inch of QPF and produce some snowfall.
With respect to precipitation types, areas south of Interstate 70 is
expected to start as rain with warmer temperatures with the push of
WAA ahead of the main surface cyclone. Areas north of Hwy. 36 appear
to remain cold enough that it will be mostly snow. As convergence
increases and the column continues to saturate through the
afternoon, it appears there should be enough ice introduction for
most of our counties, that by the time everywhere reaches below
freezing, it should transition to all snow. A review of model
soundings does not reveal any prolonged periods of mixed
precipitation, as the warm nose remains very shallow and is
currently showing peaks of only +0.5C. Snowfall amounts are still
demonstrating a wider range of possibilities. The depth of this
cyclone and the stronger kinematics does leave good potential for
frontogenetical structures and TROWAL features to provide
enhancements to snowfall. Along the cold front on the south side of
the system, stronger FGEN develops through the secondary QPF axis in
our southeast counties. If there is a quicker transition over to
snow from earlier rainfall, areas in our southeast Thursday into
Friday could see between 2-3 inches of snowfall. If the transition
takes a few hours longer, this zone may be looking more at a 1-2
inches range. If the FGEN band comes in much weaker, there may not
be enough lift through the DGZ to produce larger dendrites, that
could further reduce snowfall. Current probabilities for southeast
and central MO counties to see at least 1 inch of snow are 60 to 70
percent. For 3 inches of snow, around 20 to 30 percent. Especially
for our central counties, the strength of any dry slot intrusion
could eat into much of this moisture. As for counties in Northern
Missouri, the TROWAL characteristics will be more present here.
While the FGEN is not nearly as strong, it is still enhanced between
850-700mb and then another localized maximum between 700-500mb.
Omega values between -10 to -15 microbars through the DGZ and
-15 to -20 elsewhere should promote larger dendritic growth
especially late into Friday evening. There is also stronger Q-vector
convergence noted in deterministic GFS and NAM output. With lower
static stability and lower EPV, narrow bands of enhanced snowfall is
possible. The NAM is actually quite strong with these kinematic
enhancements, though it also pushes dry air further northward. GFS
and ECMWF as mentioned before more moist within the deformation
zone, and still have these kinematic enhancements. However, with the
spread in moisture return, inner-quartile ranges for snowfall across
are north are still a bit wide, with some points between 3-8 inches.
Overall probabilities for at least 5 inches of snow is around 40 to
50 percent, which is actually a slight decrease from early ensemble
cycles that were between 50-60 percent. For at least 3 inches of
snow in our northern counties, looking at 60-70 percent
probabilities. Although there has been a northward trend in the
heavier snowfall, the potential to reach 5 inches of snowfall in our
north were still high enough that inside of 48 hours of expected
onset, have issued a Winter Storm Watch for our north. Given dry
slot potential, have kept counties along and south of Hwy. 36 out of
it for now. Accumulating snowfall further south may eventually
warrant a Winter Weather Advisory in later shifts. It should also be
noted the 12z HREF members captured the start of this event, and
also showed a northward trend, thus, kept the current watch closer
to the IA-MO state line. Right now, the favored snowfall range is
borderline for reaching Winter Storm Criteria in our north. If a
northward trend continues, still expecting travel issues associated
with snowfall in our north. Will need to continue to monitor dry
slot potential too, which could substantially eat into forecast snow
totals. This is also why no warnings or advisories have been issued
at this time, as this played a role into lower confidence. Across
the north, there is also potential for wind gusts up to 40 MPH,
which could augment hazardous weather conditions with snowfall.

After this system moves through, an Arctic Airmass is progged to
move deep into the CONUS this weekend and continue through the start
of the next work week. Another vort max may bring more snowfall
across the area on Sunday, just depends on how much moisture is
leftover from the first system. Afternoon high temperatures will
struggle to make it out of the teens by early next week, and our
northern counties may only see single digits. Any light wind is
expected to result in wind chills values below zero, and likely
could reach -10 to -20F during the early morning hours multiple days
next week. In addition, this prolonged cold period will also keep
the snowpack on the ground longer than we typically would see a few
inches of snow last on the ground prior to melting. Most of area
holds ensemble probabilities over 90 percent for low temperatures
below 0F through next week.

Skies have cleared out with the retreating low off to the north,
with high pressure progged to settle in by tomorrow morning.
Guidance is beginning to become less favorable for the development
of fog, but conditions still remain in place for its development, so
we have lifted the potential for fog into potential for lowered
visibilities and ceilings moving into tomorrow. By late tomorrow,
a new system will move through, bringing rain/snow mix south of
KSTJ. Forecast soundings are hinting towards the possibility of
freezing rain at some TAF sites, but atmospheric profiles show
likelier mixed precip, so indicating that at most TAF sites with
continuing lowered visibilities and ceilings being introduced.
