AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
National Weather Service Kansas City/Pleasant Hill MO
1054 PM CST Thu Jan 11 2024

.Discussion...
Issued at 429 PM CST THU JAN 11 2024

Key Messages:

- Heavier Snow Toward MO-IA Border Tonight/Friday

- Light Snow, With Light Ice Between I-70 and Hwy. 36 Tonight/Friday

- Bitter Cold Coming in Friday Night, Continues Through Next Week

Discussion:

Strong PV anomaly is moving across the CONUS with deep H5 trough.
There are two notable jet streaks with this system, a 120+kt streak
that is rounding the base of the trough into the TX/OK Panhandle
Region, and another over the Sierra Nevadas. The latter mentioned
jet streak will force the trough to dig over the next 12 hours, and
H5 trough axis is expected to acquire a negative tilt. The formerly
mentioned jet streak will continue to provide stronger CVA into the
eastern Plains, with strong dCVA over the Panhandle Region of TX/OK
allowing the surface cyclone to continue to deepen. Over the past 6
hours, surface pressure falls have already been ongoing with the
approaching cyclone, and weak H5 ridge axis has passed the region.
The stronger CVA will mark the start of H5 height falls at some
point this evening. This has been able to push a warm front into
Missouri, and is expected to continue to make it somewhere between
Interstate 70 and Hwy. 36 this evening. Isentropic upglide has
supported the stratiform cloud cover this afternoon, trying to
provide extra moisture. We are still dealing with a dry layer around
the 800mb level that so far through the late afternoon has kept most
precipitation from reaching the ground. Looks like the better
convergence is delayed by a few hours then was expected based on
yesterday, therefore have pushed the Winter Weather Headlines back
to about 7pm local time this evening. Before getting into the heavy
snow potential toward the Iowa border, will first discuss the
potential for freezing rain/drizzle to mix in mainly around the
vicinity of the warm front which will be roughly along the I-70
corridor to Hwy. 36, and may extend northeast toward Kirksville
Area. With the warm front, there has been an increase in the
strength of the magnitude and depth of the warm nose, now progged in
deterministic guidance to be around +1.0 to +1.5C in the lowest 3km
of the atmosphere. Ice introduction at times also may be limited,
with drier air near the DGZ. Even if there is some limited ice
introduction, the melting layer should be strong enough for liquid
droplets to reach the near freezing surface. Elevated surfaces may
cool enough to allow for light ice accumulations. Right now, the
warm nose does not looked to be too long-lived, as continued ascent
should help to moisten the column completely allowing for snow
later. Overall ice accumulations will be just a few hundredths of an
inch. NBM probabilities for exceeding more than one-tenth of an inch
of ice is less than 15 percent. As for snowfall amounts between
Interstate 70 and Hwy. 36, right now looks lighter as a drier
conveyor belt is likely going to punch through somewhere along the
south side of the surface cyclone. There should still be enough
moisture to produce some snowfall, but this could largely eat into
the QPF across the central portion of our CWA this evening and into
Friday. NBM probabilities for at least 1 inch of snow is between 20
30 percent for our central counties, and less than 20 percent for a
threshold of 3 inches and more. Current 25th-75th percentile snow
ranges though are a bit wider, between a trace and 3 inches and this
is because of the ensemble member spread in how quickly freezing
rain/drizzle to snow transition occurs. The HREF mean snow values
for our central counties is very low, less than 1 inch, with a few
hundredths an inch of freezing rain. Some of the CAMs seem to be
more robust with the dry punch. Visit weather.gov/eax/winter to view
a full set up probabilistic information. Areas south of Interstate
70 right now are progged to remain dry. Some light rain may be able
to sneak up this evening along the warm front with isentropic
ascent. There was some concern with freezing potential south of
Interstate 70 this evening, but right now the temperature drop looks
to be gradual, and with stronger winds any light rain may quickly
dry up. We will continue to monitor if there are any flash freeze
like concerns for areas south of Interstate 70, but at the current
moment concerns for this are low.

For areas close to the Iowa border in the Winter Storm Warning,
heavier accumulating snow is still on track. Warm conveyor belt is
expected to draw plenty of moisture into the backside of this
system, with stronger FGEN occurring within the TROWAL feature. The
DGZ should have plenty of moisture in Northern Missouri with more
than sufficient lift between -10 to -15 microbars. In addition,
model cross-section analysis also shows lower EPV values between
800mb-600mb along with Q-vector convergence that may support banded
structures, especially for northwest Missouri. This will be capable
of supporting snow totals within the Winter Storm Warning area
between 3 and 6 inches, with localized amounts of 4 to 8 inches
possible. Overall probabilities for exceeding 3 inches of snow in
our north is between 60 and 70 percent, and probabilities for at
least 5 inches or more is between 40 and 50 percent. HREF mean in
our northwest is generally 4 to 6 inches, with pockets of 6 to 8
inches. HREF probability matched means also show pockets of 6 to 8,
and based on this TROWAL setup and QPF seems to be a reasonable high
end range for any bands that may develop. During the snowfall late
tonight and into Friday, winds between 25 and 30 MPH are possible.
Stronger winds on the backside of this system after the snow is
complete could push 40 MPH. Will need monitor actual snowfall
reports and wind potential, as visibility issues may continue beyond
the snowfall. The good news is that with cold temperatures recently,
the previous snowfall has crusted over, which would limit blowing
snow to mostly newer snowfall with this system.

After the system exits late Friday afternoon, gusty winds will
continue on the backside as strong pressure gradient remains in
place. That along with persistent CAA will allow for rapid downward
momentum transport that will keep wind gusts in our east between 35
and 45 MPH, where the wind advisory is currently at. Areas west will
be between 25 and 35 MPH. Another short-wave moves through Sunday
into Monday that could produce some light snowfall, though moisture
return looks questionable. Both deterministic and ensemble guidance
have backed off on precipitation Sunday into Monday. The main story
is going to be bitterly cold temperatures that start Saturday
morning, and will continue through the middle of the week. Wind
Chill Headlines will be needed for an extended period of time.
Ensemble probabilities for temperatures below 0F are over 95 percent
for low temperatures, and over 95 percent for afternoon high
temperatures below 20F for most of area. Wind chill values may drop
as low at 25 to 30 below zero in our northern counties, with 20 to
25 below zero elsewhere.

.Aviation...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Friday Night)
Issued at 1053 PM CST THU JAN 11 2024

MVFR conditions have started to spread across the Kansas-Missouri
state line terminals along with some freezing rain, sleet, and
snow. The freezing rain and sleet will likely threaten the
terminals through 09Z when the character of the precipitation
will change to all snow as colder air moves in along with strong
and gusty northwest winds. Expect CIGs and VIS to drop into the
IFR range as the precipitation converts to snow. Otherwise, expect
the gusty northwest wind to persist through this TAF cycle.
