.KEY MESSAGES...

- A fast moving storm system will bring snow to the area
  tonight. Snowfall rates up to an inch per hour are possible
  north and west of a Cedar Rapids to Dubuque line. 2 to 3
  inches of snow is possible in this area with lower amounts to
  the south and east.

- Another long duration strong winter storm will affect the area
  Thursday night into Saturday morning, bringing accumulating
  snow and strong winds leading to significant blowing and
  drifting. A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for most of
  the outlook area except for the far southern tier of counties.

- Very cold air moves into the area this weekend and to start
  next week as temperatures may struggle to reach above zero
  during the day on Sunday and Monday.

.SHORT TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Issued at 315 PM CST Wed Jan 10 2024

High pressure at the surface and aloft is exiting to the east this
afternoon as a strong clipper system moves from Nebraska into
western Iowa. The shortwave is evident on water vapor moving across
northeast Nebraska. There is moderate snow associated with this
system with surface observations showing visibility less than a mile
with some locations down to a half mile at times.  A strong storm
system that will impact the region to end the week is moving into
western Wyoming and Colorado this afternoon. Temperatures this
afternoon range from 24 degrees at Dubuque and Cedar Rapids to 30
degrees at Mount Pleasant.

The main forecast concern is a fast moving storm system that will
spread snow across mainly the northern half of the area this
evening. The best lift and moisture are forecast along and north of
Interstate 80 with lower chances to the south. Model soundings show
deep saturation across the area north of Interstate 80 with the
potential for a rain/snow mix or freezing drizzle for a brief period
south of a Fairfield to Galesburg line. Precipitation at any one
location will fall in a 2 to 3 hour window tonight from 6 PM through
about 2 AM from west to east. Lift is maximized across our area this
evening and the HREF is showing snowfall rates of up to 1 inch per
hour. Snow totals of 2 to 3 inches are possible north and west of a
Vinton to Cedar Rapids to Dubuque line with 1 to 2 inches to the
south and eat. Along and south of Interstate 80 less than a half an
inch of snow is expected. Snow will quickly end by 3 AM with clouds
thinning across the area through 6 AM. Low temperatures on Thursday
morning will range from the upper teens west of a Delaware to
Burlington Iowa line to the mid 20s along a line from Freeport to
Princeton Illinois.

Another lull in the active weather is expected on Thursday as a
shortwave ridge quickly moves into the area. Clouds will linger
across the area through the day with slightly cooler temperatures
expected behind the departing clipper system. High temperatures on
Thursday will range from the lower 20s west of a Cedar Rapids to
Manchester line to the lower 30s in west central Illinois.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...

Thursday through Saturday Morning:

Confidence remains high on a significant late week system in the
Mid to Upper Mississippi Valley and Great Lakes regions. Models
in good agreement on a very deep low (sub 980mb) set to track
from Arkansas to Lower Michigan. There is still uncertainty on
the exact track of the low which will have implications on how
much warm air works up into our region from the SE (out ahead
of the surface low). Hi-res model trends today push the
rain/mix line at least as far north as the Highway 34 corridor,
and some take it north of I-80 for several hours before dynamic
cooling leads to a rapid changeover to snow during the afternoon
as the low deepens over central Illinois.

Primary Impacts:
This is a dynamic, multi-faceted storm system with the potential
for (1) periods of heavy snow and mixed precipitation, (2) a
changeover back to accumulating snow for areas that receive
rain or a mix, (3) rapid temperature drop from the 30s to the
20s and teens Friday afternoon into Friday night from W to E as
an arctic front plows through the region leading to possible
flash freeze conditions on roadways, and lastly (4) very strong
wind gusts of 40-45 mph behind the front resulting in
significant blowing and drifting snow into Saturday morning as
the drier snow blows across the old snowpack.

Headlines:
Winter headlines may eventually be needed for counties that are
not in the initial Winter Storm Watch, but confidence was too
low today to issue a headline in the far southern tier of
counties. Also, some of the counties in the Winter Storm Watch
could either be converted to an advisory or a warning depending
on north/south trends of the forecast surface low track.

Timing:
The first round of moderate to heavy snow and mixed
precipitation is expected to move in quickly from the southwest
Thursday night mostly after 8 PM in the southwest, reaching the
northeast counties after midnight. Then there could be a dry
slot that works into the southern half or so of the area later
Friday morning into the midday period before the precipitation
redevelops, becoming widespread during the afternoon/evening.
The snow will continue through Friday night gradually becoming
lighter after 9 PM to midnight, with occasional light snow
lasting into Saturday morning.

Snowfall:
Our latest model blended snowfall forecast has a widespread 4"
to 8" of snow across the area, heaviest north of I-80. WPC's 60
member ensemble has 70-90% chances for 6" or more along/north of
I-80, highest NE of the Quad Cities with 30% in the far south.
For 8", the probabilities range from less than 30% in the south
to 70% northeast of the Quad Cities. Amounts over 8" are
possible across the northeast but will let later shifts
reassess before ramping up the forecast amounts.

Winds/Blowing Snow:
Due to the colder air mass advecting in Friday/Friday night,
SLRs which may start fairly low Thursday night (at or below
10:1) will trend much higher into the evening and nighttime
period to 15:1 - 17:1. For this reason, we are concerned about
significant blowing and drifting in open and rural areas as the
dry snow blows across the old/hard snowpack. The tight surface
pressure gradient between the surface low to our east in the
970s and arctic high pressure building into the Northern Plains
will result in strong NW winds sustained 20-25 mph with gusts of
40+ mph at times from Friday afternoon into Saturday AM.

Saturday Afternoon On:

The coldest air of the season is expected to advect into the
region with highs only in the single digits above and below zero
from Sunday through Tuesday and lows well below zero. We'll
have to watch for wind chills hitting headline criteria (20
below or colder) at times from Saturday night into early next
week.

The burst of moderate to even heavy snow from earlier has
weakened late this evening, but it still is resulting in MVFR to
IFR visibility reductions. Additional snow accumulations over
the next few hours could be up to a half inch, but that should
be all. As the system moves to the east, expected winds to
become more northwesterly with time, and MVFR to IFR ceilings to
remain in place. In the short-term, BRL does look to scattered
out briefly before these MVFR ceilings move back in. MVFR cigs
should linger into late Thursday.
