.KEY MESSAGES...

- Another round of showers and possible embedded thunderstorms
  this afternoon and evening. Severe weather is not likely.

- Gusty winds up to 40 mph possible in the Thumb and Tri-Cities this
  evening.

- Scattered to numerous rain and snow showers Wednesday through
  Thursday. No snow accumulation during the daylight hours, but
  Thursday night may see minor accumulations as lows fall to near
  freezing.

- The low pressure system exits eastward by Friday leading to a dry
  and slightly warmer weekend.

&&

.DISCUSSION...

Active weather continues over the next 48 to 60 hours as an
anomalously strong low pressure system tracks into and stalls over
the Great Lakes tonight through Thursday. NAEFS ensemble mean MSLP
of 984mb over Lake Michigan tonight is at the climatological minimum
for the date. Coverage of showers waned over the local area much of
today as the mature system's mid-level dry slot cut into moisture
depth. An increasing coverage is now returning this afternoon and
evening as elevated fgen and renewed moisture pivot over the region
while the center of the surface low tracks just to our south and
west before stalling. The increasing pressure gradient will cause a
burgeoning easterly LLJ (strengthening to 70 kt at 850mb over Lake
Huron tonight) to clip the Thumb region this evening through around
2 AM, with mixed confidence on the higher gusts reaching the ground
as the profile remains stable just above the surface locking much of
the higher momentum aloft. However with higher confidence in the low
track and placement of the LLJ, did bump up the gusts slightly from
the previous forecast. Occasional gusts to 45 mph will be possible
north of M-46.

The occluded front and a surge of moisture is projected to track in
from the south after 00z with numerous showers and isolated storms
along and ahead of it. Severe weather is not likely as the triple
point and surface-based instability is expected to remain to the
south, but an isolated stronger storm producing gusty winds and hail
remains possible south of I-94. Gusty winds to around 35 mph will be
possible even outside of showers. The showers will exist in an
environment characterized by 90th percentile PWAT (around 1 inch)
and integrated water vapor transport values as well mid-level lapse
rates around 6.5 C/km, so some heavy downpours will be possible. A
deeper dry slot surges in behind the front, bringing much lower PoPs
(5 to 20%) late tonight through the overnight. Milder air
accompanies the evening moisture surge, holding temps in the 40s
much of the night before they settle into the mid to upper 30s
Wednesday morning.

A deep mid-level low becomes situated over southern Lake Michigan on
Wednesday as a northern stream wave fully integrates with the
Mississippi Valley wave responsible for today's weather. This low
will shed a lobe of PV across the state tomorrow with the cold core
increasing lapse rates and providing a favorable environment for
additional light showers to blossom in from the southwest. With low
freezing levels, graupel/ice pellets will be possible in any
showers. EL heights will build toward 10 to 12 kft by late
afternoon, which may support a few thundershowers as well. Highs
will reach the mid 40s with lighter southerly winds through the day
around 10 to 15 mph. Coverage of showers should taper down with the
loss of daytime heating, but some light showers/drizzle will likely
stick around within the moist cyclonic flow. Snow showers may mix in
at times early Thursday morning as temps settle to the lower to mid
30s, but accumulations are not likely.

The expansive cut off low will slowly meander over the region
through Wednesday night and early Thursday, finally departing to the
east coast late Thursday. This keeps damp, cool, and breezy
conditions in place. Another flare-up of light showers is looking
increasingly likely on Thursday afternoon as a cold conveyor lobe of
vorticity pivots around the mid-level low during the diurnal peak.
Mainly cold rain showers are favored during the afternoon, but
quickly trend to snow showers in the evening as temps fall to the
30s. Yet another coherent lobe of PV is progged to track south into
the area Friday morning with enough wrap-around moisture to support
additional scattered snow showers and potential for minor
accumulations with lows reaching the lower 30s. Lower confidence in
showers by late Friday as the moisture finally beings to peel off to
the east.

High pressure eases into the area Saturday with rebounding thickness
progs supportive of a warm-up back to near normal temps. This marks
the start of a warming trend likely for the early part of next week
as southerly flow develops behind the ridge axis. A good chance
exists for some sunshine during this period. Varying solutions then
follow for the handling of a weaker low emerging over the Rockies on
Sunday - this system may bring additional showers by Monday and
Tuesday. At this time the forecast for Monday calls for cloud cover
near early April norms: on the pessimistic side with more clouds
than sun likely.

.MARINE...

Strengthening east winds trend higher this evening as a strong low
pressure system spins toward Lake Michigan. The expansive and
powerful wind field focused within the northeast quadrant will
produce gusts to gales across Lake Huron as low-level jet winds in
excess of 75 knots mix down to the lake surface. Upgraded the
southern Lake Huron nearshores and Saginaw Bay from Small Crafts to
gales. Model evidence trends higher in a period of storm-force gusts
from Sturgeon Point to Presque Isle early tonight, therefore
upgraded the one marine zone to a Storm Warning. Also included a
Small Craft Advisory for Lake St. Clair for gusty winds. Latest data
now supports a more prolonged lull in winds late Wednesday morning
and early afternoon as the center of the low retrogrades into
eastern Wisconsin. Winds are now expected to drop below gale-force
across most of Lake Huron before the low spins into Indiana
Wednesday evening. Opted to cut the end time significantly from the
initial Gale Warning, therefore any redevelopment of gusts to gales
will need to be treated with a separate headline. Cool northeasterly
gradient flow holds over the region Thursday before backing
northerly Friday.

.HYDROLOGY...

A large low pressure system will stall over the Great Lakes this
afternoon through Wednesday and then begin to exit eastward Thursday
into Friday. After morning rainfall ranging from 0.10 inches north
of I-69 to near 1 inch near the Ohio border, additional rainfall
amounts this afternoon and evening are forecast to range from 0.25
to 0.50 inches as additional showers and isolated storms move
through. Some localized amounts near 1 inch will be possible in the
Saginaw Valley region. Most showers move out late tonight through
early Wednesday, then lighter showers will redevelop across the area
on Wednesday with only minor additional rainfall. Flooding concerns
are minimized as the rainfall is spread out over 12 to 24 hours with
the exception of ponding of water on roads and other prone areas in
an isolated thunderstorm this evening.

AVIATION...

East-northeast winds aoa 10 knots will continue this afternoon as a
warm front approaches from the south. Sharp low level inversion will
maintain borderline LIFR/IFR clouds right into the evening, despite
mid level dry slot tracking through the area. Convective showers and
possible embedded thunderstorms developing by early evening may
actually help improve clouds bases a bit, with ceilings settling more
in low MVFR overnight as winds shift to the south-southwest behind
warm frontal passage. Strong low pressure will linger around Lake
Michigan tonight into tomorrow, and there will be a strong pressure
gradient over southwest lower Michigan which will attempt to extend
east into southeast Michigan. Wind gusts of 20-30 knots area expected
tonight into Wednesday as pretty good low level cold air advection
kicks in. A more pronounced mid level dry slot around tomorrow, and
diurnal mixing could allow for intervals of VFR cloud bases during
the afternoon, but there will also likely be MVFR scattered showers
developing producing graupel.

For DTW...Mainly just occasional light rain/drizzle this afternoon,
with main window for convective stronger showers and possible
thunderstorms in the 21-02Z window.

portions of southeast Michigan.

There is a Marginal Risk of severe thunderstorms late this afternoon
and this evening. The strongest storms will be capable of 1 inch hail
and 40 mph wind gusts while moving southwest to northeast at 40 mph.
The primary time window for severe intensity thunderstorms is 6 PM to
10 PM.
