- A steady warming trend is on track through the early week
  period, with record high temperatures expected by Tuesday.

- A strong low pressure system will impact Southeast Michigan
  Tuesday and Wednesday. There is potential for thunderstorms and
  heavy rain along and ahead of a Wednesday cold front.

- Strong west to northwest winds in the 30 to 40 mph are likely
  Wednesday.

A weak surface trough will reach the area overnight and essentially
wash out on Monday with current southwest flow veering to the north
and northeast early Monday morning and around to southeast by late
in the forecast. The upper feature driving this trough will bring a
SCT-BKN area of 10-15kft clouds tonight. There is some hint of some
fog potential as limited low level moisture pools just a bit along
this trough axis early Monday morning, but with low confidence will
leave out of the forecast at this time.

DISCUSSION...

The next northern stream wave packet is steadily pushing into the
western and northern Great Lakes region this afternoon. A hearty
inflection on the cyclonic shear side of the exit region exists
indicative of synoptic support for lift for areas well north of
Southeast Michigan. Modeled RH fields show a fair amount of moisture
and resolved saturation advecting directly through the forecast area
during the middle afternoon hours, loosely collocated to an increase
in low-midlevel convergence associated with midlevel momentum/low
level jet impulse. Radar returns have shown virga early this
afternoon in/around this forcing but will flash east northeastward
during the next 3 hours or so. Very dry and stable conditions exist
in the lowest 5.0 kft agl so confidence is high in virga. Varying
high cloud is anticipated in the near term particularly north of M
59 but will give way to clear skies tonight. Interesting dry/dormant
cold front structure with a uniform wind shift will push through the
area after 06Z tonight. Just another indicator of the pattern that
despite favorable radiating cooling conditions, temperatures are
still expected to run well above normal at daybreak.

The inflection point to the entrance region will quickly pivot away
from Lower Michigan Monday giving way to split flow ridging. Broad
anticyclonic flow trajectories will support increasing southwesterly
return flow. Very dry and low dewpoint conditions early in the day
with a marked increase in surface based warm advection during the
late afternoon. High temperatures Monday are expected to top out in
the middle 50s.

Potent weather system is then set for the early to middle portion of
the week as a lobe of very strong planetary vorticity will result in
an impressive thermal gradient over the Northern Plains states. The
high baroclinicity environment will result in both a strong surface
low rippling along the frontal zone and high kinematics/high
geostrophic flow for the region. A few timeframes and features to
note upon include a thetae gradient (one of many) that will lift
into Lower Michigan late Monday night or early Tuesday morning. SPC
continues to outline Southeast Michigan in a General Thunder Outlook
in the latest Day2. Large scale support for precipitation here
locally is quite organized prior to 12Z Tuesday given depth of the
warm advection and an integrity to lead shortwave energy ejecting
through the area, however, moisture is major limiting factor in the
lowest 10.0 kft agl. The better potential for elevated accas/thunder
may be observed to the west of the area with more virga/sprinkles
here in Southeast Michigan No concern for strong convective activity
prior to 12Z Tuesday. The more potent warm front will then take
shape with arrival of better backed/cyclonic flow Tuesday evening. A
lot of time exists yet to provide specifics as some very notable
differences remain in the models regarding the depth of the moisture
and how elevated instability will be. Current forecast data suggests
more of a hail and heavy rainfall threat for thunderstorm activity
Tuesday evening. A consensus is building for a main cold frontal
passage sometime just before 12Z Wednesday. This is typically a
sensitive time from a meteorological forecast perspective as a few
hours difference in timing could have important ramifications on
whether or not convection will be surface based. That said, the
kinematic field will be strong enough that heightened awareness will
be needed for the strong wind gust potential with any convection
early Wednesday. Regardless, strong nonconvective westerly winds
appear a high likelihood on Wednesday in the wake of the cold front.
Latest offered guidance suggests gusts exceeding 35 knots for much
of Southeast Michigan. Will need to monitor whether or not synoptic
moisture will get swept out of the area before low/mid temperatures
crash below -10C. Could see an outcome that supports a minor snow
accumulation perhaps in the Thumb.

A very shortlived cool down is advertised for Thursday before
another steady and notable warming trend for next weekend. The
current forecast has high temperatures Sunday back near 60.

MARINE...

Winds begin to drop-off this evening as a cold front extending well
south of eastern Canadian low pressure veers winds northwesterly
overnight. High pressure then builds southeastward across Ontario
Monday offering a tempered local pressure gradient. Winds flip
southeasterly before strengthening Monday evening as confluence
increases between High Plains low pressure and return flow off
adjacent ridging. This helps push a seasonably potent warm front up
through the central Great Lakes Monday evening offering periods of
showers and perhaps a rumble of thunder Tuesday. Some additional
showers and thunderstorms are possible Tuesday night ahead of a
powerful cold front. The frontal passage is expected to occur from
early Wednesday morning through the midday hours with rain showers
changing over to a wintry mix. Robust post-frontal cold advection
leads to steeper low-level lapse rates which offers potential for
gusts to strong gales Wednesday afternoon and evening. A Gale Watch
will likely be needed for portions of Lake Huron, along with a
period of heavy freezing spray.
