Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Des Moines IA 206 PM CST Fri Jan 12 2024 .DISCUSSION.../Tonight through Friday/ Issued at 206 PM CST Fri Jan 12 2024 Key Messages: - Ongoing winter storm with severe travel impacts will continue into tomorrow with only modest improvement, mainly in the south. - Prolonged, dangerous cold will overspread the region tonight and dominate into Tuesday. - The latter half of the week will see less hazardous weather, but a continuation of colder than normal temperatures. The ongoing winter storm system has gone relatively close to what was forecast today, with some exceptions. Most notably, dry air undercutting the system from the north resulted in a sharper than expected northern edge to the precipitation shield, and lower than anticipated snow amounts roughly northwest of an Audubon to Hampton line where only about 2-4 inches have fallen. Nevertheless, even this accumulation on top of the existing snow pack combined with the strong northwest to north winds has resulted in widespread visibilities of half a mile and below, with frequent decreases to below a quarter mile in some areas. This is also true further south and southeast, where most of the remainder of the forecast area has received heavy snowfall that continues early this afternoon. The combination of snow and blowing/drifting snow has resulted in very dangerous road conditions across most of Iowa, especially the southeastern two thirds of the state where travel is not advised in most areas and some roads are impassable. With the combination of these factors and hazards, the area-wide Blizzard Warning remains appropriate and in effect this afternoon. The remaining bands of moderate to heavy snow will gradually work eastward out of our area by this evening and tonight as the large cyclone bombing out over Illinois/Indiana also moves away. Winds will diminish slightly overnight, but remain strong and gusty. With falling snow tapering off and automated station visibility measurements increasing after dark, perceived blizzard conditions may improve somewhat overnight. However, blowing and drifting of snow will continue and travel will remain very hazardous, especially given the dangers of nighttime driving, and overall conditions are expected to worsen again on Saturday as detailed below. Therefore, the Blizzard Warning will remain in effect overnight. On Saturday a second 500 mb low will close off over South Dakota and approach northwest Iowa by the end of the day. This will help to enhance wind fields, and combined with better low-level mixing during the day, lead to a resurgence of wind speeds and gusts from mid/late morning through the day and into the evening. Forecast soundings indicate mixing depth will be considerably deeper than today, roughly twice the height, with similar or only slightly lower wind speeds/gusts predicted than we are seeing today. In addition, while moisture is more limited, the forcing ahead of the approaching low should be sufficient to generate snow showers, mainly across about the northern half of the area where the forcing is a bit stronger. The combination of snow showers, strong and gusty winds, turbulent and relatively deep mixing, along with fresh powdery snow cover on the ground will renew concerns for blowing snow, near-blizzard conditions, and very dangerous travel/road conditions through the day Saturday. This has prompted extension of the Blizzard Warning through 00Z along and north of I-80. Further south blowing snow will certainly still be an issue given the strength of the winds and a similar snow pack, however, the coverage/intensity of renewed snow showers is expected to be less further south and the topography and vegetative cover are less conducive to blizzard conditions. With travel impacts expected to continue in those areas but visibilities being somewhat less reduced, have issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Saturday instead of extending the warning in the south. Winds will gradually diminish from Saturday night into early next week with no additional accumulating snowfall forecast, thus blowing snow should likewise diminish and road conditions slowly improve. However, the danger will transition to extreme cold for several days as an Arctic outbreak spreads across the Midwest and winds are slow to subside. This threat will begin to increase tonight and by Saturday morning wind chill values are forecast to fall into the teens below zero in our eastern counties and 20 to 30 below in our central and western counties. From Saturday night through Tuesday morning these values will fall further, to 20 to 40 below zero continuously and area-wide, prompting a Wind Chill Warning through this entire period. Given the issues with drifting and snow covered roads, especially through Saturday, the extreme cold will pose an even greater danger as any travelers who become stranded would be at increased risk of exposure. All in all the next several days will be very dangerous from combined winter weather threats across most or all of Iowa. From Tuesday night into next weekend a quieter weather pattern is in store, with fleeting chances for light snow but nothing appreciable foreseen at this range. Generally northwest steering and flow will dampen any moderation of temperatures, so while the latter half of the week will be less cold than the first half, it will still be colder than normal and the snow will not be melting any time soon. Even on the warmest day of the week, Wednesday, the high temperatures will only range around the mid teens to lower 20s.
