- Unseasonable warmth today and Tuesday with some near-record
  temperatures in some locations, especially high minimum
  temperatures Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, see the climate
  section for details.

- Windy today and even more so Tuesday as winds gust to at least
  35-45 mph Tuesday. Elevated fire weather conditions will
  accompany the strong winds on Tuesday.

- Rain/storm chances return late Tuesday through Wednesday. A
  few strong to severe storms remain possible.

- Dry Thursday/Friday with more precipitation chances incoming
  for the weekend.

Dry conditions continue through Tuesday as Iowa remains beneath to
just behind the passing upper ridge. Conditions will be increasingly
warmer and windier through the next two days, however, as the
pressure gradient continues to increase and H850 temperatures surge
towards +15 to +18C on Tuesday. Our warming trend started yesterday
but continues tonight with 3 AM temperatures well above seasonal
levels and in the upper 40s to 50s. The warmer than normal morning
will be followed by highs in the 70s today and the return of some
80s on Tuesday. Cloud cover will dampen the extent of our warming
today and at times on Tuesday with cloud cover already surging into
the area early this morning and expected to persist much of the day
as moisture continues to increase with some clearing Tuesday but
limited as cloud cover increases again ahead of the approaching
system. Despite not realizing the full extent of our warming,
temperatures will still be well above seasonal levels and may make a
run at some temperature records. High temperatures are more out of
reach on Tuesday (10/29) due to being higher overall (than say
today, 10/28), but multiple high minimum temperature records will be
challenged on Tuesday (10/29) and Wednesday (10/30) in the southeast
half of the area. See the climate section for a breakdown of the
record maximum and record high minimum temperatures for select
climate sites today through Wednesday morning.

As mentioned above, our unseasonable warmth will be paired with
windy conditions and the return of at least elevated fire weather
given the ability for fire spread with the strong winds if any fire
were to start so burning is strongly discouraged and caution is
advised when it comes to working in dry agricultural fields.
Relative humidity values themselves will not be near critical
thresholds today (in the 50% range) or Tuesday (35% northwest to
55+% south), but winds will well exceed critical thresholds,
especially Tuesday. Gusts of up to around 30-35+ mph today will
become at least 35-45+ mph Tuesday with higher gusts possible as
forecast soundings remain in good agreement with 40-45 mph winds at
the bottom of the mixed layer in many locations across central Iowa
and nearing 50-60 mph at the top of the mixed layer. Although it
remains unlikely we'll see these highest gusts at the surface,
roughly the southern half of the area continues to have high
probability, >90%, for gusts over 35 mph with all but the northwest
greater than 45% probability for gusts over 35 mph. A wind headline
seems quite likely in a good portion of the area Tuesday but will
let the next shift reevaluate and did not issue anything on this
shift due to the extra lead time. Take the time now to secure any
outdoor holiday decorations before Tuesday!

After our unseasonably warm and windy weather, a slow moving cold
front will bring the return of showers and storms to the forecast
starting after midnight Tuesday night (Wednesday morning) and
continuing through much of the day Wednesday with the front finally
exiting Wednesday night/before daybreak Thursday. Ahead of the
front, dew points surge into the 50s to even 60s in the warm sector
with shear values quite high with a 60+ knot low level jet moving
overhead Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. Our unseasonable
warmth keeps capping in place through much of Tuesday night with the
cap finally eroding with time early Wednesday. This will allow the
coverage of storms to gradually increase with time overnight
Wednesday (Tuesday night) with rain and storm activity maintained by
the strong jet. Instability values remain weaker overall and
decrease with time given the overnight nature, but still could see
some MUCAPE values of up to 500-700 J/kg as storms approach our
area. Some strong to severe storms remain possible with
elevated storms bringing a hail threat the most likely solution
at this point, but will need to continue to watch any storm
formation that could occur along the front. Details will
continue to be evaluated as this period starts to get into the
higher-res guidance window but see the SPC Day 2 Outlook for
additional details on Tuesday night/Wednesday morning and the
SPC Day 3 Outlook for later Wednesday as the front continues to
slowly move through the area providing a second window for
stronger storms south to southeast. Although the rain and storm
chances could spoil some Trick or Treat plans Wednesday night,
QPF values may reach towards 0.5-1" in roughly the southeast
half of the area which would be welcome given our expanding
drought conditions.

Behind the frontal passage early Thursday, cooler weather will
return as highs fall back to the 50s with only gradual warming
towards 60 by the weekend. A passing high pressure will keep
conditions dry Thursday and Friday before precipitation chances
return for the weekend into early next week as the active pattern
resumes which is good news for our ongoing dry conditions, but less
so if you have outdoor plans this weekend. Stay tuned for further

VFR cigs and vsbys expected to prevail through the period. Winds
will be the main story for the period as gusts up to 30kts will
be possible over the next 6 hours. Winds with gusts up to 25kts
possible in the north overnight with more sporadic gusts
possible for KOTM and KDSM. Winds at these sites could reach
40kts on occasion between 06z and 15z with peak windows for
winds being better refined in the upcoming issuances. LLWS up to
50kts to prevail overnight thru 15z for the area with a strong
southerly jet overhead. Winds will remain elevated through the
remainder of the TAF period and beyond.

No hazardous weather is expected at this time.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Tuesday through Sunday

Gusty south to southwest winds are expected Tuesday with wind
gusts of 45 mph or greater possible. Gusty winds will persist into
Wednesday especially over parts of southeast Iowa where gusts to
40 mph could occur.

Elevated fire weather conditions may also develop at times,
especially on Tuesday, due to the increasing wind and low relative
humidity in the afternoon hours.

Scattered thunderstorms are likely from late Tuesday night into
Wednesday night. A few strong storms may occur during this period.
Additional thunderstorm chances arrive next weekend mainly across
southern Iowa. Any potential for severe weather will be better
assessed in the coming days for next weekend.
