Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Dodge City KS 342 AM CST Thu Jan 11 2024 .KEY MESSAGES... - Another round of accumulating snow possible (>60% for at least 1” of snow) near the I-70 corridor plus gusty north winds producing blowing and drifting snow tonight. - Wind chills falling below zero early Friday morning will mark the beginning an extended period of bitter cold temperatures and wind chills. (Wind Chills below -15F possible from Saturday through Monday) && .SHORT TERM /THROUGH FRIDAY/... Issued at 320 AM CST Thu Jan 11 2024 CAMS were in good agreement this morning with an area of low pressure deepening along the lee of the Rockies as an upper level trough, located over western Wyoming and Utah at 06z Thursday, approaches from the west. Have not observed any significant differences in timing or track of this upper trough from the past few runs as it crosses the Rockies and moves out into Southern/Central Plains over the next 36 hours. Given the agreement between the CAMS along with run to run consistency from the past few model runs will continue to follow the general trend on timing of the cold front later today (Thursday) along with precipitation chances. As a result, southwest Kansas can expect a cold frontal passage during the afternoon today with gusty south winds shifting to the north as this cold front passes and the deepening area of low pressure at the surface located in Colorado earlier moves into the panhandle of Texas. Along with the wind shift the temperatures will begin to fall through the remainder of the day and continue to fall during the overnight hours as strong north winds develop and usher in some cold temperatures. Mean 850mb temperatures fall from +3C at 18z Thursday to -6 to -9C by 00z Friday following the cold frontal passage. This alone easily supports temperatures falling back into the teens within 3 hours following the frontal passage. Developing north wind will only add to the cold and by 6pm there will be a 70-90% chance for wind chills northwest of a Liberal to Dodge City to Larned line will be at or below zero. Further south and east it will not be as cold due to a later cold frontal passage but even here you can expect a +30 degree drop in temperatures in a matter of hours late day/evening once the cold front passes and the winds shift to the north. As for precipitation chances...700mb frontogenesis and relative humidity of >80% in the -10 to -30C layer will accompany the upper level trough as it crosses southwest Kansas early tonight with the best area of this forcing occurring near and north of I-70. Based on the progressive nature of this band of more favorable lift initially was not overly excited about snowfall amounts, but given this forcing ahead of the upper wave along with around 15:1 snow ratios I could see snow totals tonight near 2” around the I-70 corridor given that HREF continues to show >60% chance of at least 0.1” of QPF. In addition, given this 2-5hr window of snow there is a >70% chance for winds to be gusting higher than 35 mph during the same time frame which may produce some blowing or drifting snow. Interesting to see that the 00z HREF between 00z and 06z Friday has a 50% chance for visibilities to fall less than 1mile along the I-70 corridor Along with Ness and Rush counties. The current winter weather advisory still looks on track but we may need to monitor locations as far south as Garden City and Dodge City if the wind and snow comes together just right. Currently the probability of this to occur is less than 20%. On Friday the gusty north winds will gradually decrease as the upper level trough moves east towards Missouri. Some afternoon sun and a northwest downslope flow will allow temperatures to rebound back some but with lingering snow cover, especially north and east of Dodge do not think it will rebound back as warm as what the latest guidance suggests. Also given how temperatures behaved over the past few days have undercut guidance (favored the 25th percentile) where the deeper/more widespread snowpack is expected. && .LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/... Issued at 320 AM CST Thu Jan 11 2024 The cold air that settled into southwest Kansas on Friday will get a reinforcement of bitter cold air over the weekend. For multiple days ensembles have been advertising an upper ridge axis on Friday over Alaska as an upper level trough drops south out of Canada into the northern Rockies. Latest Satellite loop is verifying that the ensembles were correct and latest 06z Friday surface observations am seeing a bitter (-25 to -30F) cold area of high pressure in Alberta and the snow cover analysis from Hydrologic Remote Sensing Center so do not think much modification in this air mass will occur as this area of high pressure moves south across the Northern High Plains and towards Kansas. Also given the cloud cover expected across Kansas this weekend little diurnal change is likely to occur. Given this if one considers current forecast lows at or below zero Saturday morning and the downward maxT NBM forecast trend over the past few days then trending towards temperatures even cooler than the latest NBM temperature forecast from Saturday through Monday would appear to be the way to go. This is further supported by the probability for the MaxT being zero or lower goes from 20-30% north of Dodge City Saturday to 40-50% on Sunday. This will result not only with highs near or below zero across portions of southwest Kansas but will also result in wind chill readings below -20F for an extended period of time. Several places could easily see wind chills below -25 for several days, especially north of Dodge City. Given these expected conditions those in southwest Kansas should closely monitor the forecast for possible wind chill advisories or warnings. Now is the time to prepared for these bitter cold temps/wind chills. Along with the prolonged period of cold temperatures another opportunity for snow will also occur as our next more significant upper level trough crosses the central plains. Ensemble clusters were in decent agreement with timing with this next upper wave but were struggling with the strength and exact track. Even given this disagreement it appears that all the models to various degrees were favoring widespread precipitation again across southwest Kansas. Only question is how much and where the heavier amount will fall. As a result, this is a high confidence forecast on precipitation chances but low confidence forecast on amounts. Probability for precipitation looks on track and most areas will likely see this increase in the chance Sunday night. Confidence on amounts however are too low even to speculate. && .AVIATION /06Z TAFS THROUGH 06Z FRIDAY/... Issued at 1154 PM CST Wed Jan 10 2024 Main focus early this morning will be cold frontal passage between 18z Thursday and 00z Friday. CAMS were in good agreement and had run to run consistency with a cold front crossing southwest Kansas Thursday afternoon (between 18z Thursday and 00z Friday). As this boundary passes gusty south winds will become north and increase to near 20 knots. Along with the increase in winds the IFR ceilings will be possible along with scattered light snow. Areas most favorable for the snow to develop behind the cold front will be along and northeast of the Garden City and Dodge City areas. We will also be monitoring the potential for lower visibilities due to blowing and drifting snow given the expected winds and snowfall. At this time based on the latest CAMS the ceilings will lower below 1000ft AGL in the Hays, Garden City and Dodge City areas between 21z Thursday and 00z Friday once the cold front passes.
