Highest snow totals look to be confined to the southern zones && .SHORT TERM /THROUGH FRIDAY/... Issued at 132 PM CST Thu Jan 11 2024 A strong cold front will move through the area by this evening shifting winds to the north with some gusts above 35 mph. Skis will be mostly cloudy through midnight with decreasing cloudiness from west to east. There will be enough moisture and lift for snow to fall this evening into the early part of the overnight. Snowfall amounts look to be less than an inch with the exception of along the I-70 corridor where 2 inches will be possible. The snow in combination with the wind will create blowing snow which will reduce visibilities at times. This system move out of the area by sunrise tomorrow with mostly clear skies expected throughout the day. Another cold front is progged to move through the area tomorrow night. No precipitation is expected behind this front with only an increase in cloudiness. As for temperatures, lows tonight will generally dip into the single digits with teens possible across south central Kansas. Very low wind chills are expected tomorrow morning and dip into the negative teens and negative single digits. Highs tomorrow are expected to range from the upper teens along the I-70 corridor to around freezing along the KS/OK border. Lows tomorrow night will generally be around zero degrees with the exception of across south central Kansas where single digits will be found. && .LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/... Issued at 132 PM CST Thu Jan 11 2024 Cold air continues to funnel into western Kansas this weekend into the early part of next week. Highs Saturday through Tuesday will generally be in the single digits with lows in the negative teens to negative single digits. The coldest day looks to be Sunday into Monday morning with over a 30 percent chance of temperatures not rising above zero degrees north of Highway 50 and a 10-20 percent chance of temperatures below -15F for a low Monday morning across our northern zones. Brutal wind chills below -20 will be possible Saturday through Tuesday morning, especially across our northern zones. In addition to the cold conditions, a disturbance is expected to swing out of the Rockies and into the Central Plains Sunday. Additional snow is expected with this system. As of now, ensemble models show a 15-30 percent chance of 2 inches of snow or more south of Highway 50. Upper level ridging is expected to build across the western United States after this system moves out placing western Kansas under northwest flow aloft. This should suppress any activity from forming Monday into the mid part of the week. Also ceilings were starting to improve as an upper level trough begins to cross western Kansas. Based on HREF probabilities for ceilings and latest satellite loop the cloud cover will erode from west to east overnight with VFR conditions developing at Garden City, Dodge City and Liberal between 08z and 12z Friday. Hays should see VFR conditions develop between 12z and 15z Friday.
