Issued at 748 PM CST Fri Mar 1 2024 Nighttime microphysics satellite imagery shows a compact patch of stratus encompassing Stafford, Pratt, and Barber counties. This stratus has been stubborn today, resisting the early March insolation, and keeping temperatures in the far eastern CWA restricted to the 40s. Now that the sun is down, short term high resolution models show this stratus making a westward retreat, which seems logical with light SEly flow prevailing. Stratus should remain east of US 283 tonight, before rapidly dissipating Saturday morning. Given southerly flow and weak moisture advection, most locations will remain above freezing through sunrise Saturday. Model guidance forecasts more strong warming Saturday, with another net increase of about +5C at 850 mb. This warmer profile, along with full sunshine (0% sky grids), dry air, and SWly downslope of 20-30 mph will send temperatures soaring to the mid to upper 70s by 3 pm. Mixing will be efficient, with gusts to near 40 mph, and downslope looks ideal for some locations to touch 80 degrees. Have high confidence regarding widespread red flag wildfire conditions Saturday afternoon, and earlier hot spots/smoldering ashes may easily reignite in the expected warm, dry windy conditions. Fire conditions look to be most critical southwest of Dodge City, particularly far SW KS, where the combination of warmest temperatures, driest air, and strongest SW winds will overlap. && .SHORT TERM /THROUGH SATURDAY/... Issued at 203 PM CST Fri Mar 1 2024 WV imagery indicates a zonal flow aloft prevailing across the Western High Plains. Near the surface, a weak lee side trough of low pressure remains anchored near and along the Colorado border. Tranquil conditions are forecast during the period with a zonal flow aloft persisting across the high plains of western Kansas while much drier air in the lower levels continues to dominate the region. A warming trend for low temperatures is expected again tonight as prevailing southwesterlies pulls slightly warmer air into southwest Kansas, pushing H85 temperatures up into the mid-teens(C). With the HREF showing showing a only a 20-40% probability of temperatures falling below 32F tonight, look for lows generally in the 30s(F). Prevailing southwesterlies will enhance warm air advection Saturday, nudging H85 temperatures further up into the upper teens(C). The HREF paints a widespread 90-100% probability of temperatures exceeding 70F with a 20% probability of temperatures exceeding 80F in south central Kansas.
