.SHORT TERM /THROUGH SATURDAY/...

07z observations show a compact upper low moving into eastern
Kansas with residual low clouds behind the low overspreading
much of southwest Kansas. At the surface a lee side trough is
present in eastern Colorado with winds in southwest Kansas
coming in out of the south.

Throughout today the low clouds and cold air advection from the
departing storm system will exit from west to east through the
morning with the clouds and colder air hanging on the longest
for areas along and west of highway 83. The lee side trough
should reach to around the Kansas and Colorado border by late
afternoon and drier air to the west should enter into these
areas by late in the day as well. Winds today should be lighter
as south winds will be 10-20 mph. Given how the colder air will
linger on in the east highs will only reach into the upper 50s
to lower 60s in the east to the lower to mid 70s for areas west
of highway 83.

Tonight a large upper level trough will enter into California
off the Pacific coast and this will start to turn our upper
level winds more southwesterly ushering in warmer air across
southwest Kansas. With the southwest winds and a warmer 850 mb
layer (~16 C) overnight lows should fall back into the mid to
upper 30s.

Saturday as the large upper level trough moves eastward a 700 mb
shortwave will ride over the Rockies and strengthen a surface
low and lee side trough in eastern Colorado. Winds will increase
out of the southwest by late morning and in the afternoon will
be 20-30 mph. Drier air from the southwest will come in with the
winds and relative humidity values should fall to 15% or less
for areas along and west of highway 183. Elevated to near
critical fire weather is expected by late afternoon. Highs
should reach into the upper 70s to around 80 degrees.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/...

Sunday will once again have near critical to critical fire
weather danger for portions of southwest Kansas. The main
concern will be the position of the surface low and front during
the afternoon. Ensemble clusters in the GFS ensembles are in
good agreement the surface low will be in southeast Colorado
while the Euro ensembles have a wider spread of where it thinks
the surface low will end up by 00Z with some in southeast
Colorado to some in south central Kansas. Overall the highest
confidence of seeing RH values below 50% and southwest wind
gusts over 25 mph look to be along and south of highway 50 as
the NBM4.1 probabilities are 60-95% of this combination
happening. As a result a fire weather watch is out for these
areas. Winds and cooler air should arrive in our northwest zones
by early afternoon as the upper level trough enters into the
northern plains and a 700 mb shortwave helps to push the front
southeastward. Highs ahead of the front could reach into the
lower 80s in the red hills.

For the middle to later parts of next week ensemble clusters
have a large upper level trough moving into the Rockies
during the day on Thursday. Ahead of the trough the subtropical
jet winds start to increase and the left exit region of the jet
enters the southern plains by late Wednesday afternoon. Rain
chances start to increase Thursday morning and NBM4.1 output
paints 20-30% POPs across southwest Kansas. Overall as the
system progresses into Friday the clusters suggest a longwave
trough slowly moving into central Kansas with the more heavily
favored Euro cluster model hinting towards a closed low. This
would suggest that we could see rain chances continuing through
Friday.

.AVIATION /18Z TAFS THROUGH 18Z SATURDAY/...

VFR conditions will prevail in vicinity of all TAF sites through
early Saturday. Light south-southwest winds are forecast to persist
across central and much of southwest Kansas through early Friday
as weak lee side troughing remains anchored near and along the

for areas along the Oklahoma border.
