Very dry and warm Today. A broad surface trough is the main
mesoscale feature over our area driving the light surface winds
that are expected. Short term model trend the winds from
westerly most of the day, turning southerly by the late
afternoon and evening. A sunny sky with full insolation will
help temperatures soar into the 70s by afternoon, while some
mid level or cirrus clouds are likely to spill in late overnight
but have no sensible weather impacts. Relatively mild overnight
lows in the upper 30s to low 40s are the expected temperatures,
however low lying areas where winds go light could dip to mid
30s fairly easily in such a dry airmass.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...

The relatively dry, downslope westerly flow will continue
promoting quite warm temperatures for the late February season.
Although it’s still firmly in the winter season, the
temperatures as forecast, on an expected basis, fall in the
upper 70s, which are very beatable in terms of daily records.
Dodge and Garden hit a high of 76 and 78 respectively in 1981-
while the high at Medicine Lodge hit 81 in 1996.

Very windy conditions are likely on Tuesday with the
deterministic Canadian, EC and GFS all showing an 850 mb low
immediately downstream of the advancing cold front out of the
northern plains, but westerly downslope momentum to the right
(south side) of the 850 mb low, where models are favoring around
30 knots. Where the uncertainty lies is in the timing of the
cold front dropping south across the region and there is a
markedly slower Canadian solution compared to GFS/EC running it
into Oklahoma in the afternoon, having not only implications for
the winds, but the highs for the day as well.

Behind the front, the western and northern periphery of
counties see low probability rain/snow chances (upwards of
20%), around the Tuesday evening time frame.

Wednesday, behind the front will be the coolest day, and
despite the cold air advection, the expected highs aren’t all
that cold for late February – generally in the mid 40s based on
the latest National Blend of Models forecast.

Fire Weather Risk will be Significant in the afternoons the next
couple of days (Monday-Tuesday). The time duration criterion
for red flag warnings is in question for Monday afternoon. As
such the need for a Fire Weather Watch is not of high confidence
right now, especially given the relatively low spatial coverage
on the near 15% RH fields. A fire weather watch was added
however to the westernmost 6 counties for Monday afternoon.
With that said, the area with greatest risk for wildfire spread
Monday afternoon will be the westernmost counties (areas
generally west of Garden City and Liberal, to the Colorado
line). On Tuesday, the risk are looks to shift into the eastern
half of the region – targeting the red hills area as gusty winds
overspread a larger portion of Kansas. This however is still
contingent on the timing of the frontal boundary, which leaves
large uncertainty in either scenario. If the front comes though
the RH won’t be as low – but it will be very windy in either
scenario and burning should be highly discouraged considering
the dry fuels abound.
