WV imagery indicates weak ridging aloft transitioning east through
the Colorado Rockies. Near the surface, lee side troughing is slowly
strengthening in eastern Colorado.

Tranquil conditions will persist today into tonight as the SREF
indicates weak ridging aloft pushing east across the Central Plains
while much drier air in the lower/mid levels continues to dominate
the high plains of western Kansas. An ongoing warming trend
continues today as lee side troughing strengthens in eastern
Colorado, enhancing a prevailing southerly flow across western
Kansas and drawing warmer air into the area, nudging H85
temperatures up well above 0C. Despite expected increasing cloud
cover, look for widespread afternoon highs up into the 40s(F).
Mostly cloudy skies will help keep lows tonight from dropping
below the 30s(F) in south central Kansas with the 20s(F) expected
farther west closer to the Colorado border.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...

A strong winter storm system is still forecast to impact portions
of western Kansas late Monday into early Tuesday as medium range
ensembles indicate a deepening upper level trough digging southeast
across the Great Basin late today before evolving into a closed
low as it continues through the Four Corners Region into the Desert
Southwest, creating a rapidly intensifying difluent southwest flow
aloft across western Kansas early Monday morning. In response,
developing low pressure in northeast New Mexico is projected to
quickly deepen as it shifts eastward into the Texas Panhandle by
Monday afternoon while an attendant frontal boundary extends
northeast through southwest/central Kansas into southern Nebraska.
As moisture continues to pool ahead of an approaching cold front,
rain chances (70-90%) will rapidly develop across central Kansas
and portions of southwest Kansas by Monday afternoon with the
NBM 4.1 indicating a widespread 60-80% probability of 12-hr QPF
exceeding a tenth of an inch.

Colder air spilling south into far western Kansas will trigger a
switchover to snow as early as late morning/mid-day Monday with
the transition line advancing slowly eastward into central Kansas
Monday night. The heaviest snowfall is projected to occur sometime
generally Monday afternoon into Monday evening as an axis of
intensifying H7 frontogenetic banding transitions through western
Kansas. The best chance for snow looks to be in a corridor stretching
from extreme southwest Kansas northeast into central Kansas where
the NBM 4.1 indicates a 60-80% probability for 24-hr snow accumulations
exceeding 2 inches. However, a more problematic issue will be blowing
snow conditions as the deepening surface low sets up a fairly tight
pressure gradient across much of western Kansas Monday afternoon
and evening with H85 winds upward of 45-50kt. As it stands now,
GEFS Ensemble members indicate the worst winds developing in west
central/extreme southwest Kansas Monday afternoon, painting the
area with an 80-90% probability of wind gusts exceeding 50 mph
with the same 80-90% probability of gusts exceeding 40 mph farther
east as the stronger wind field spreads into central Kansas Monday
night. Even with lighter snow accumulations, this would create
blowing snow conditions drastically reducing visibility. Precipitation
chances rapidly dissipate early Tuesday as the upper low kicks farther
east through the Central Plains.

Colder air surging into western Kansas behind a cold frontal passage
Monday will certainly drop temperatures down to more seasonal levels,
if not lower. GEFS Ensemble members show a 50-60% probability of
temperatures climbing above freezing in extreme southwest Kansas
with highs likely well up into the 30s(F) farther east into central
Kansas with the lower 40s(F) even a possibility in south central
Kansas. There's only a 20-30% probability of temperatures reaching
above freezing in central and west central Kansas Tuesday. A slight
rebound is forecast Wednesday with ensemble members showing a 80-100%
probability of highs pushing above 32 degrees.

VFR will continue through 00z Mon, with a cirrus overcast. South
to southeast winds will remain strong at all airports through
the afternoon, gusting 30-32 kts. High confidence that flight
categories will degrade very rapidly tonight, in response to
strong moisture advection ahead of the incoming storm. All short
term models show stratus developing rapidly after 06z Mon, with
LIFR ceilings expected at all airports by 12z Mon. Reduced
visibility in BR/FG is also likely Monday morning. Widespread
rain is expected for several hours Monday morning, before
changing to snow from west to east during the day Monday.
Extremely poor/dangerous flying weather is expected just after
this TAF period, 00-12z Tue, with near zero visibility in snow
and blowing snow, at least at times, at all airports. North wind
gusts as strong as 50 kts are expected. Probability of blizzard
conditions is highest at GCK/HYS, but snow and blowing snow
will impact aviation at DDC/LBL as well through 12z Tue.
