Current Weather...
Quiet weather currently ongoing across southeast Wyoming and western
Nebraska. Mostly clear skies with only a few clouds present across
northern portions of the CWA and the higher terrain as of 10Z. Gusty
winds have remained across much of southeast Wyoming overnight with
Arlington and Elk Mountain currently gusting to around 30mph.
Temperatures area wide are in the mid-20s to low-30s tonight, with
Wheatland as the warm spot at 37F. Expect rather quiet conditions
through the remainder of the overnight hours before strong winds
return later this evening.
Discussion...
A pleasant afternoon is in store for much of southeast Wyoming and
western Nebraska as skies remain clear with ample sunshine. The
incoming upper-level ridge will begin to flatten throughout the day
just to the west of the region. An upper-level shortwave will push
towards the area from the northwest Friday into Saturday and
continue to push the upper-level ridge further south. Winds at 250mb
will turn westerly Friday evening into the early morning hours
Saturday as 500mb and 700mb winds follow. By late Friday night, a
50kt 700mb jet develops overhead across the Laramie Range. Winds are
expected to pick up in the wind prone regions of southeast Wyoming
Friday night as 850mb Craig to Casper gradients increase towards the
60m mark and 700mb gradients approach the low- to mid-50m mark. In
house random forest guidance further supports this uptick in winds
with a 60% probability for high winds at both Arlington and Bordeaux
late Friday night into early Saturday morning. Winds are expected to
remain strong through the entire weekend, especially in the wind
prone regions. Craig to Casper gradients continue to increase
through the day Saturday and approach the 70m mark by 12Z Saturday
morning and 75m mark by Sunday. It is possible that the high winds
on Saturday will spread further east, potentially impacting central
Laramie County as subsidence off the Laramie Range maxes out
Saturday afternoon. In house guidance continues to show around a 60%
probability for high winds at Arlington and Bordeaux through most of
the weekend, with a brief period of 50% probability for high winds
at Cheyenne on Saturday afternoon. The 700mb jet overhead will
continue to increase towards the 60kt mark Saturday into Sunday with
nearly 70kts possible across the Laramie Range. With good agreement
for a strong westerly 700mb jet, in house guidance with 60% or
greater probability for high winds, and impressive gradients across
the region, decided to issue a High Wind Watch for the Summit,
Arlington, and Bordeaux from 03Z Saturday through 12Z Monday. The
South Laramie Range Foothills will have a delayed start to the
higher winds, so went with a later start time, 12Z Saturday, for the
High Wind Watch in this zone. A brief lull in the winds is possible
Saturday night, but confidence is not there to issue a segmented
High Wind Watch to show this lull. Will leave the decision of a
segmented High Wind Watch/Warning to the day crew as more model data
comes in and the potential lull becomes more (or less) apparent.
Temperatures this weekend will be much warmer than normal thanks to
the downslope warming from the strong winds. Temperatures in the mid-
50s to low-60s will be possible east of the Laramie Range where the
downslope winds will be the strongest on Saturday. Friday
temperatures will be cooler, in the 40s and 50s east of the Laramie
Range and 30s west of the Laramie Range. Mostly clear skies for the
weekend, but may see increased clouds near the higher terrain where
mountain waves may develop.

Strong winds look to continue through the weekend Sunday, especially
for southeast WY wind-prone locations. Northwest flow aloft will
persist with heightened gradients Sunday before turning more zonal
with lee troughing increasing mslp gradients across the Laramie
Range. CAG-CPR 850/700mb height gradients peak around 75/65m midday
Sunday. Latest NAEFS guidance shows climatological 99th percentile
700mb winds across much of the CWA Sunday into Monday. NBM
probability of wind gusts exceeding 48 kt is greater than 80% for
most wind-prone areas with notable probabilities spreading out onto
adjacent foothills and plains. Daytime temperatures over the weekend
into next week will be quite mild with downsloping winds, reaching
the 50s to low 60s east of I-25. Winds will begin to calm down
Monday night into Tuesday, but it will not be for quiet weather.
While the strong winds across our area are ongoing Monday, an upper
level trough will begin digging down the PacNW with a strong cold
front passing through Tuesday. Not only will temperatures drop near
the single digits Tuesday night, but strong frontal forcing will
lead to snowfall across much of the CWA. Higher elevations,
especially the Sierra Madres, are most likely to see the highest
totals and longest duration of snowfall between Monday night and
Tuesday evening. However, the upper level trough remaining
positively tilted will limit duration of this event east of the
Laramie Range. Notable differences also remain with the GFS and EC
as the Euro does not keep this trough as amplified and has been
trending a little bit flatter, with a lower QPF scenario.
Could see another return of strong winds in the wake of this midweek
system. Northwest flow aloft will return through late in the week
with a strong high developing over north-central CO increasing mslp
gradients across the region. Temperatures will begin to rebound back
above average for late February/early March, but will probably be
short-lived as an active weather pattern continues.
