The snow showers have moved south of our cwa early this morning,
with clearing skies in its wake. Very cold temperatures have
been observed through 9Z due to the clearing skies and new snow
cover. Several locations have dipped into the negative single
digits for temperatures, with some moderation in those
temperatures when wind speeds have picked up to mix the
nighttime inversion down to the surface. Alliance and Chadron
both approached -10F by 6Z. Expect a cold and mostly sunny morning
to greet everyone as they start their Saturday, with a few
locations in valley areas seeing patchy ground fog as a
possibility.

The sunshine will be a welcome sight after the past couple of
days seeing mostly cloudy conditions. A large dome of 1040+ mb
surface high pressure will dominate the area today. With the
recent snowfall, this increased albedo will limit how warm most
locations get for the afternoon high temperature. Nudged
temperatures down a couple of degrees from guidance to reflect
this localized effect. Overall, temperatures should still rise
into the 20s and 30s for most locations not in the mountain
zones. The sunshine should help with melting some of the recent
snowfall. The mid-levels of the atmosphere will begin to warm
considerably after 18z today because of a ridge axis shifting to
the east throughout the day. On its heels however, a shortwave
disturbance from the Pacific Northwest will approach our cwa
late tonight. This will begin to tighten the pressure gradient
aloft and at the surface across WY and western NE. The nighttime
inversion and elevated winds will keep the higher terrain warmer
overnight, which should assist with evaporation and/or melting
of snowfall in the wind prone and gap areas.

Sunday will see the pressure tendencies reflected in the form of
elevated to strong wind gusts to the east of the Laramie Range.
Downslope effects from the dry air propagating off the higher
elevations via mountain wave activity will cause much warmer
temperatures to be observed across the forecast area. Despite
the recent snowfall, the dry air, sunshine, and windy
conditions will assist with melting a large majority of the snow
depth on the ground. There will also be some spots that observe
blowing snow in the higher terrain, but visibility reductions
should be limited. Daytime highs in the 30s and 40s will be
expected in southeast WY, and a few spots in the NE Panhandle
will see locally higher temps eclipsing the 50 degree mark. With
the mention of stronger winds, have gone ahead with a high wind
watch headline for the typical areas across southeast WY.
Subsidence really kicks into high gear across far southeast WY
Sunday afternoon to early Monday morning as winds between
700-800 mb continue to ramp up, well above 50-60+ knots. Several
cities will have potentially a bare ground on Monday morning
from the wind, warmer temperatures, and dry air because of snow
melt and/or evaporation. Expect the gradual warming trend to
continue into early next week.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...

Long Range models in good agreement for early next week, but
solutions then diverge for mid to late week as Pacific energy
flattens the upper level ridge axis by midweek. Primary forecast
concern for Monday and Tuesday will be strong gusty winds for
portions of southeast Wyoming possibly extending eastward into
the southern Nebraska Panhandle. All models show a fast moving
but potent clipper moving southeast across the region and
exiting into Nebraska and Kansas late Monday morning. Low to
midlevel pressure gradients are forecast to increase along the
mountains with 700mb winds increasing between 45 to 55 Knots.
For Monday night and early Tuesday, the southern branch of the
polar jet stream will intensify and lift north towards the
Colorado and Wyoming border. Anticyclonic curvature is
typically indicative of an increased risk for strong gusty
winds, especially for the wind prone and sub-wind prone areas
along I-80 and I-25. Model Omega values indicate mountain wave
activity and strong subsidence along and west of the I-25
corridor both days. Increased winds, especially for the time
periods between midnight and 11 am each day. A High Wind Watch
has been issued and extends through early Monday morning for
portions of the I-80 and I-25 corridor, including Cheyenne, I-80
Summit, and Bordeaux. Will have to monitor the next event for
late Monday night and early Tuesday morning, with more of an
emphasis for areas along and east of the Laramie Range according
to in- house wind models.

As we head into Wednesday, all models show some Pacific energy
associated with the 150 kt to 175 kt jet max pushing east across
the Great Basin Region and into the intermountain west. The 00z
GFS shows weaker energy and quasi-zonal flow across the Front
Range while the ECMWF and Canadian a slow moving upper level
trough moving across Colorado, bringing snow into most of
southeast Wyoming and western Nebraska...especially along the
I-80 corridor. Ensemble guidance generally support the idea of
increasing snowfall chances and colder temperatures late
Wednesday through Thursday. Continued to increase POP for this
time period with a good mountain snowfall event expected.
Lowered temperatures back to normal or slightly below normal for
Thursday and possibly Friday.

Winds gusting 40 to 50 MPH are ongoing along Interstate 25 between
Chugwater and Wheatland, near Bordeaux. These cross winds are
expected to continue through the afternoon. Additionally, drifting
snow will lead to slick road conditions. Use caution if traveling
with light weight or high profile vehicles.
