.SHORT TERM /THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...

A shortwave trough is moving through the mountains and into the High
plains this afternoon. This wave has caused some precipitation to
develop over the Rawlins through Laramie area. Also, this evening
the lee cyclone off the Laramie range will start to push east and
relax the pressure gradient over our area. Since westerly flow is
still the predominant flow pattern through this time, there's not
much confidence that any potential precipitation cause by this wave
will be produced past the Laramie range due to downsloping. However,
later tonight there is a brief period to which we switch to a more
Northwest flow to give us a slight chance for a dusting for the
areas just east of I-25. During this time there is an area of
Frontogenesis that will aide in forcing over the high plains. Also,
there is some isentropic lift that will also aide in forcing to
produce some precipitation. However, there is a lot of dry air from
700mb to the surface to overcome. Dewpoint depressions are also
fairly large (10+). While the radar may depict some returns, it may
be mostly virga. There is a chance the virga will help us saturate
the column faster its a very limited window for this to happen
(4hrs) and not confident if the environment will saturate quick
enough to produce a dusting. To further add to the uncertainty,
Westerly flow returns in the morning and becomes the predominant
regime once more and will dry out the environment.
For Friday into Saturday, Friday will be a break from the wind with
some partially cloudy skies for most of the morning into the
afternoon. Late afternoon into the overnight period another
shortwave will push through the mountains and high plains. Looking
at the GFS 2PVU pressure surface map, there is a wave that slightly
weakens as it moves east past the Rockies mountains that it should
still produce enough lift to create some snow for the Sierra Madres
and Snowy Mountains. There is a uncertainty as to whether or not the
Laramie range will also experience some snow. Couple with the timing
of this wave the pressure gradient will tighten as produce another
high wind event. The height differences between Craig and Casper
start to increase to 60+ meters at the 850mb level and 50+ meters at
the 700mb level. The random forest Machine learning algorithm also
increases the probabilities for 60-70 mph gust from 40 to 80 percent
at Arlington Saturday morning leading to higher confidence in a high
wind watch. To further add to the higher confidence, The GFS 850-
500mb omega field indicates strong subsident flow between -15 to -20
to help aid in the production of those stronger winds. Due to the
prolonged high wind signal over the Arlington area, a long duration
watch seemed like the best bet considering there wasn't a clear
signal for a break in the high wind/mountain wave activity. For the
summit and Bordeaux areas there appeared to be a small break into
the winds so the watch is going from 06z Saturday to 12z Sunday.
As for the snow in the Sierra Madre and Snowy Ranges...
Looking at NAEFS ensemble table, the Integrated Water Vapor
Transport (IVT), showing values in the 95th percentile from 18z
Friday to 06 Saturday with a small break in the overnight period.
When compared to model guidance of 700mb RH, NAEFS matches up fairly
well with the surge of moisture coming from the Pacific ocean and
being caught by the Rocky Mountains. With this plume of moisture and
westerly flow for a strong upslope event, A winter storm warning was
issued for the Sierra Madre Range where between 10 to 15 inches of
snow could develop in that 12 hour time period. However, the Snowy
Range may only get 6 to 12 inches with the most confidence in those
Advisory level accumulations.

Active weather will continue to the end of 2024 as the train of
storm systems off of the Pacific continues.
Picking up on Saturday morning, the shortwave trough responsible for
the Friday night round of mountain snowfall and wind will be pushing
out of the area. Forecast soundings show drier air moving into the
cloud layer in the early morning, ushering in the next lull in
mountain snowfall for the morning hours Saturday. While a lull in
snowfall is expected, we won't get so lucky with the winds, with
strong winds expected to ramp up through the day Saturday. There is
high confidence in strong winds for the wind prone areas, but the
current watch may need to be expanded to adjacent areas for the
daytime hours Saturday with widespread 45 to 60-knot 700-mb winds
forecast by several models over southeast Wyoming. The lull in
mountain snowfall will also be brief, as the nose of a 140+knot 200-
mb jet streak pushes into the area by midday Saturday. The break in
snowfall could be as short as 6 hours or less. Abundant moisture
will be streaming in from the Pacific in a solid atmospheric river
setup Saturday afternoon into Saturday night. NAEFS mean integrated
water vapor transport values are above the 90th percentile of
climatology for most of the area, and approaching the climatological
maximum along the WY/CO border. With good synoptic support from the
left exit region of the jet streak aloft combined with very moist
upslope flow, expecting another round of moderate to perhaps heavy
snowfall in the mountains. Recent model guidance is also beginning
to show subtle isentropic lift developing with WNW mid-level flow
slightly overrunning a NW to SE oriented frontal boundary. Combined
with modest frontogenesis, expect some radar echos to develop
Saturday evening over the High Plains. It's uncertain if this will
be able to reach the ground with a dry boundary layer and downslope
westerly winds, but some mixed rain and snow showers may be
possible. For now, nudged PoPs up slightly to a slight chance for
Wyoming, but this may need to be expanded to Nebraska with later
updates.
The next lull in mountain snow will be during the day Sunday as the
ridge axis passes overhead and shifts the moisture plume north of
our area for 6 to 12 hours. The final shortwave in this parade of
storms will push in rapidly from the west Sunday night into Monday,
resuming mountain snowfall quickly. In addition to boosting the wind
speeds across the area once again, this system will be the best
chance for High Plains snowfall we have seen in a while, especially
north of the North Platte River valley. While models are in good
agreement in showing lee-cyclogenesis Sunday night into Monday,
ensembles are also fairly well clustered around a surface low track
from Casper towards central Nebraska. Northerly flow north of the
track will be the primary area for snowfall, while westerly to
northwesterly flow south of the track may undercut snowfall and
limit accumulation potential south of the North Platte River valley
over the plains. This is still a ways out with potential for change,
but will need to be monitored over the coming days. Regardless of
the precipitation outcome, much colder air is expected to push in
for the entire area Monday into Tuesday, and we do expect the strong
winds to finally abate by Tuesday morning.

A series of disturbances will move across the terminals in
westerly flow aloft, producing occasionally gusty winds and
extensive cloud cover.
Wyoming TAFS...For Rawlins, ceilings will range from 1500 to
2300 feet until 15Z, then will be near 10000 feet and lower
again to 3500 feet after 00Z. For Laramie and Cheyenne, ceilings
will be near 15000 feet, with occasional ceilings near 3500 feet
at Laramie until 09Z. Winds will gust to 35 knots at Rawlins,
to 30 knots at Laramie from 16Z to 00Z, and to 35 knots at
Cheyenne until 00Z.
Nebraska TAFS...Scattered to broken clouds near 15000 feet will
prevail. Winds will gust to 25 knots at Scottsbluff until 09Z,
and gust to 25 knots at all terminals from 14Z to 00Z.
