High pressure that was over the CWA yesterday has now moved east
into the central plains. Shortwave trough moving into the area
from western Wyoming with increased clouds. Snow mainly
confined to northwestern Colorado...but composite radar showing
some snow making it into southern Carbon County.
Mesoscale guidance from the HRRR and RAP showing most of the
snow from this transiting low staying west across Carbon and
Albany Counties today. But they both show that possibly Laramie
County may see some snow showers this afternoon...mainly across
the northern part of the county. Did keep low chance PoPs (30
percent) for Laramie County before decreasing PoPs as the low
exits southeast.
Winds will be on the increase this evening as low departs. Craig
to Casper 850/700mb height gradients on the increase this
evening. Up near 60mtrs after 06Z at 850mbs and at 700mbs by 12Z
Thursday. As a result...High Wind Watches were issued...starting
first at Arlington at 09Z...Muddy Gap at 12Z Thursday and
finally Bordeaux and Converse County 15Z to 18Z...running
through 00Z Friday. Random Forest High Wind Guidance showing
this as well...so confidence is high that strong winds are going
to occur in these 4 zones.
Get a brief break in the strong gradients Thursday night into
Friday morning before they begin to increase again Friday
evening. There may not be a break in winds at Arlington...but
the other zones likely to come down for a time before increasing
Friday evening into Saturday.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...

Active weather is expected through the end of the year with
prolonged mountain snow and persistently windy conditions across the
area Saturday through Monday.
With an upper-level shortwave exiting eastward throughout the day
Saturday, a strong MSLP gradient will set up across the CWA. High
pressure building over western Colorado and a lee-side surface
trough east of the Laramie Range will lead to the tightening
gradients. CAG-CPR 700 mb height gradients will also strengthen
Saturday afternoon and into the day Sunday with values above 60
meters. Winds aloft will respond to these gradients with 700 mb
winds peaking at 70 kts Saturday night! Very strong subsidence with
this event will likely bring these winds down to the surface. The
typical southeast Wyoming wind prones will likely need high wind
headlines Saturday and through the day Sunday, but wind prone
adjacent areas like central Carbon and Laramie Counties may also
need high wind headlines. In-house guidance shows great high wind
probabilities for the wind prones and decent probabilities for
wind prone adjacent areas. Aside from the wind, the exiting
shortwave will gradually diminish snow showers across the
mountains on Saturday and Sunday.
A very brief break from the winds will be possible Sunday evening
before the next shortwave arrives. However, with the next shortwave
arriving Sunday night, the winds will return. Once again gradients
will tighten as a surface low tracks across Wyoming. Winds aloft
will increase to around 60 kts with great subsidence. Luckily this
wind event does not look as widespread as the one before it. For the
most part, high winds with this event look to be confined the wind
prone areas. However, as the surface low tracks into the southern
Nebraska panhandle during the day Monday, elevated winds could be
possible, so will continue to monitor this in the coming days. This
shortwave will also bring another shot of mountain snow to the
Sierra Madre and Snowy Ranges. Advisory level snow amounts will be
likely for the mountains. The GFS and ECMWF are also hinting at
precipitation in the lower elevations as well. However,
snowfall amounts at this time look fairly minimal as
temperatures still appear fairly mild during the day Monday.
Tuesday looks like the next calm day as the shortwave exits and
tracks eastward. Looking at lighter winds and minimal precipitation
chances during the day Tuesday.

A weak storm system passing through the area today is bringing a
few rain and snow showers to the vicinity of WY terminals.
Occasional MVFR will be possible for the next few hours. CIGs
may remain borderline MVFR at KRWL and KLAR through the evening
and overnight hours, with clearing expected towards Thursday
morning. There is a slight chance for fog near KLAR and
Nebraska terminals on Thursday morning, but confidence is too
low to add to the TAF at this time.
