Latest upper air analysis depicts the upper level ridge slowly
migrating eastward, with the ridge axis centered across west central
Wyoming, as the next wave comes more inland from the Pacific
Northwest. Observations throughout the morning have been more
relaxed than the last few days, with temperatures climbing
throughout the morning and afternoon. Still some gusty flow across
the I-80 corridor this morning with some peak winds around 40 mph
around the typical wind prone areas. However, have continued to see
improvement throughout the day with winds lightening to around 25
mph and into the mid-teens headed eastward into the High Plains.
Today and Saturday will remain the warmest in the period with
daytime highs expected to be in the high 40s to low 50s for areas
east of the Laramie Range where warming downsloping flow will likely
play a role and into the low 40s for areas off to the west both
days. Although, increased cloudiness throughout the day today from
the approaching system will keep temperatures from climbing too high
above climatology.
Little to no changes in the near term forecast, as the next system
continues to push eastward from the Western Seaboard to the
Intermountain West before coming into range early tomorrow morning.
Models have begun to come into much better alignment with the
overall timing and evolution of this system as the disorganized
shortwave/closed low digs east/southeast across Wyoming through
tomorrow afternoon and into Nebraska by the evening hours. Quite a
bit off differences than progged by the models yesterday, with the
system remaining much more disorganized and being a bit too far
north to provide proper upslope flow for most areas in the CWA. As a
result, the best precipitation associated with this system will
remain with the western facing slopes in the Sierra Madres and quite
a bit of shadowing for all areas eastward, including the Snowy
Mountains. Did end up cutting QPF for the Snowy Mountains quite a
bit, with latest blends being a bit too high and not taking into
account possible shadowing. Regardless, for areas with higher PoPs,
will most likely get lighter snow showers with limited moisture
within the column as forecast PWATs remain on the lower side and the
mirrored solution of low QPF within the GEFS plumes.
Main forecast concerns will be focused on the upcoming gusty to
stronger winds possible late tomorrow night into Saturday. Increased
gradients in response to the upper level low ejecting further
eastward and the next ridge coming into central Wyoming will be
enough to kick wind speeds upwards towards criteria along the I-80
corridor for the wind prone areas in Arlington and the Summit. Local
in-house model guidance has continued to trend upward with 60% to
80% probabilities for high wind criteria based winds for both KARL
and Buford East. This has gained traction with NBM v4.2 Probability
of Exceeding 48 knots trending upwards with greater than 70%
probabilities for KBRX, KLAR, and the Summit. As a result, felt
comfortable enough to issue a high wind watch for zones mentioned
above. Only issue will be KBRX where local in-house model guidance
shows only elevated wind and lower probabilities for high wind
criteria. Weighed watch criteria based on the NBM v4.2, but will
need to monitor local guidance to determine what headlines will be
warranted in later forecast packages.

Fairly active weather pattern expected for the long term forecast
with several high wind to near-high wind events likely for much of
next week. The best chances for high winds currently looks to be
Sunday afternoon/evening into Monday morning, but elevated to near-
high winds are possible throughout the week. On Sunday, the upper-
level ridge over the region will be pushed off to the east by an
approaching trough from the Pacific Northwest. By Sunday evening,
the base of the trough will be positioned directly overhead, leading
to westerly winds through the middle and upper atmosphere. A 700mb
low develops over eastern Montana and western North Dakota and
quickly intensifies as is begins to drop to the southeast. As the
700mb low develops and intensifies, the positioning allows for
westerly flow across the region with tightening height gradients in
response to the strengthening low. The GFS currently suggests a 70-
75kt, westerly, 700mb jet across the Laramie Range by Sunday
afternoon. Surface pressure gradients strengthen across the region
as the surface low develops across western and central South Dakota,
leading to a strong pressure difference from the southwest to
northeast across the CWA. 850mb Craig to Casper gradients surface
into the upper-70s to mid-80s as this low develops, with 700mb
gradients increase into the low- to mid-70s as well. 850-500mb, GFS,
downward omega gradients max out Sunday afternoon across the Laramie
Range southward through the mountains of Colorado, suggesting strong
winds at Bordeaux. Additionally, strong downward omega value exist
across the Snowy and Sierra Madre ranges, favoring strong winds at
Arlington. Finally, in house, random forest guidance increases
probabilities of high winds to 50% at Arlington and 65% at Bordeaux.
With all these values in mind, increased winds across the Laramie
Range and the wind prone locations of southeast Wyoming. With the
strong downward omega values present across the southern Laramie
Range, Cheyenne may also see a period of high winds Sunday afternoon
into early morning Monday. A strong cold front moves through late
Sunday morning into the afternoon associated with the developing
surface low and 700mb temperatures tank from 1 to 3C to -12 to -10C
across the region. With the strong cold front pushing through, winds
should still remain elevated. Cooler temperatures arrive for Monday
with highs in the 30s and 40s area wide. Winds taper off by around
15Z Monday, leading to the calmest day of the long term period.
The potential for elevated winds returns Tuesday through the end of
the week as several disturbances push over and favor strong winds.
The next best chance for near-high wind criteria winds looks to be
Thursday this week as northerly to northwesterly flow dominates
aloft. Craig to Casper height gradients increase into the mid-60s to
low-70s Thursday morning as a surface high pushes across the Dakotas
to the southeast into portions of the Midwest. This system is still
about a week out, so it continue to be monitored. Overall, this
weeks looks to be a typical, windy week for southeast Wyoming and
western Nebraska.
