Not expecting any major changes to the overall atmospheric
pattern, with the latest upper air analysis highlighting the
upper level ridge slowly tilting more inland from the Western
Seaboard to the Intermountain West and some light weakening of
the deep trough off to the east. Mild weather continues for
another day under this setup, with the latest observations
showing temperatures rising throughout the afternoon into the
mid to high 50s across southeast Wyoming and even into the low
60s for areas in the Nebraska Panhandle.
Main forecast concerns over the next 12 to 48 hours include high
wind potentials across the wind prones tonight into tomorrow morning
and more widespread winds late tomorrow night. High Wind Watch
is currently in effect for Bordeaux beginning shortly before
midnight through 11am tomorrow. Will continue to be a tricky
forecast in terms of the first high wind headlines, as a weak
shortwave disturbance digs to the southeast from central Wyoming
to northeast Colorado through 12z tomorrow. Wind speeds
are expected to be elevated from this feature, with upwards to
40 knots possible just below the inversion setting up overnight.
Latest HiRes model guidance mirrors this solution with the
surface gradients being the main driver of the event and the
latest model runs having the MSLP 4mb gradients draped just a
bit further west than would be ideal. Will hold off on upgrading
the current watches to warnings, with upwards to 50 mph wind
gusts possible and maybe an observation or two of criteria based
winds through Bordeaux.
Confidence is a bit higher for the second high wind event expected
this weekend, with the upper level ridge finally weakening with a
southeasterly jog into the Dakotas as the result of an upper level
closed low beginning to take shape just north of Montana. Under this
setup, increased gradients with quasi-zonal flow begins to take hold
across the zone as stronger westerly flow pushes from west to east.
NBM v4.2 Probability of Exceeding 48 knots have continued to trend
upwards with greater than 70% probabilities for greater than 48
knots for Bordeaux and Arlington, and greater than 60% probabilities
for over 41 knots gusts across all other zones in the current High
Wind Watches in effect for 8pm Saturday through the weekend and into
next week. Some concerns with elevated to stronger winds will make
their way into the Laramie Valley, as the latest MAV guidance
continues to trend upward and having good support with the NBM v4.2
showing strong probabilities for wind gusts to be greater than 41
knots. Did end up increasing wind speeds for the Laramie Valley
with gusts up to 42 knots and will need to further evaluate if
it should be brought into the current headlines.
Lastly, will expect to see increased temperatures persist with
Saturday being the warmest in the period as strong downsloping
winds will bring temperatures up a few degrees higher than
otherwise expected. As has been the pattern over the last
several months, NAEFS mean 700mb temperatures have held in the
climatological 90th percentile across the CWA for Saturday, and
areas to the west into the climatological 99th percentile. Went
ahead and continued to add in higher NBM percentiles to bring
temperatures up on Saturday into the high 50s and mid-60s for
areas east of the Laramie Range where warming downsloping flow
will play a role.

Strong winds ongoing Sunday evening as GFS showing 60-65kts at
700mb...50-55kts at 750mb and 40kts at 800mb. Craig to Casper
850/700mb height gradients at 60mtrs at 00Z Monday that begin to
ease off as we progress through the evening hours. Upper
shortwave tracks across Montana Sunday evening into southern
North Dakota by 06Z Monday. So easing gradients and wind speeds
sounds reasonable at this point.
It will be cold Monday as GFS 700mb temperatures fall to -12 to
-14C behind that upper shortwave. Mountain snow looking fairly
likely (60%) west of the Laramie Range. East of the Laramie
Range...we look to be affected by downsloping...so just cold
and blustery conditions expected in this area. Afternoon highs
in the 30s east of the Laramie Range and 20s west.
See an increase in winds once again Tuesday night into Wednesday
as gradients increase with upper ridging trying to build into
the area from the west. At the same time...a Clipper system
tracks into western Nebraska anD South Dakota that look to
enhance the gradients across southeast Wyoming. This wind event
may last a couple days as in house high wind guidance show
Craig to Casper height gradients staying above 60mtrs at least
through Thursday afternoon. Good news if you're
optimistic...700mb temperatures on the climb with this ridge
building into the area. By Thursday morning...700mb temperatures
up near -2C to 0C. So could see 50s returning east of the
Laramie Range Thursday afternoon.
