.SHORT TERM /THROUGH TUESDAY/...

The active weather pattern continues to keep it a busy short-
term forecast through Tuesday. Currently as of 9Z, there is a
departing semi-stationary frontal boundary draped over the
western NE Panhandle. This has brought low clouds and reduced
visibility to areas also. Additionally, further upstream in
central Wyoming, we have our next cold FROPA advancing to the
east and southeast. This has brought our next round of light
snow showers to portions of the cwa overnight. Surface
temperatures are a little elevated so far, with temperatures in
the 30s and 40s due to the lingering cloud cover from both
weather disturbances. Would expect the light snow shower
activity to increase in coverage for the higher terrain of the
Snowy and Sierra Madre Mtns after daybreak, but the highest
accumulations will reside above elevations of 9000 feet. The
I-80 Summit will also have impacts, but accumulations will not
be realized as much in that region. A further south trajectory
of the storm system overall has limited forecast snowfall
totals. Still expect the south and southeast facing aspects of
the higher terrain to see the localized higher snowfall totals
through Monday morning. Light rain showers and rain sprinkles
can be expected for most of the remainder of today along and
east of I-25 due to the cold front not advancing east all that
quickly. Would expect that most areas will see a rain/snow to
snow shower transition by 6Z Monday.
On the heels of the departing cold front, we will see the next
weather system approaching from the Pacific Northwest. This will
reinforce the cold air in place once we have a stronger cold
front advect Arctic air from Canada into our region by midweek.
Before the arrival of this next weather system, we will have to
contend with the Wyoming wind machine being turned back on so to
speak. Surface pressure gradients will tighten, 700mb wind gusts
of 50-60 knots are modeled, and omega fields depict rising and
sinking motion in quick succession of one another across
southeast Wyoming by Monday evening. Have gone ahead with an
earlier than usual High Wind Watch headline for several zones to
give a heads up to those that plan on heading outdoors for their
civic duty of voting on Tuesday, because it will be windy. Wind
gusts of 50-75mph are favored in wind prone and gap regions of
southeast Wyoming, but some of the foothills and areas to the
east could see the wind gusts of 40-50mph on Tuesday morning to
the early afternoon timeline. Areas that saw accumulating
snowfall from the weather system on Sunday into Monday may see
blowing snow become a hazard across local roads and highways on
Tuesday. To compound the issue, an additional round of snow
showers from the advancing weather system from the Pacific
Northwest will increase the chance for reduced visibilities to
some areas by Tuesday afternoon and evening. The cooler than
normal temperatures will remain entrenched across the area due
to the continued impulses of cold air from advancing weather
systems for the short term to medium range forecast.

The slow moving upper-level trough is still on track for Tuesday
night through much of the week. Tuesday night into Wednesday
morning, the upper-level trough will be positioned over eastern
Montana south through western Wyoming. A weak jet streak is progged
to be over western Kansas. Long range models are in good agreement
on this trough stalling out over the Intermountain West and not
pushing out of the region until Saturday and Sunday. Continued
cyclonic vorticity advection will be present at 500mb as the upper-
level low stalls out and rotates around the Four Corners region
Wednesday through Wednesday night. Additional synoptic-driven lift
will be present across the CWA leading to a slight chance to chance
of snow showers Wednesday onward. Accumulations will be light
outside of the mountain zones, due to the more showery nature of the
snow. However, there is significant different between long range
models regarding the evolution and propagation of this system. The
ECMWF and GFS keep a similar location of the 700mb low Thursday and
most of the day Friday, but things begin to change Friday night into
Saturday. The GFS slows the 700mb low and strengthens it, so it is
spinning over southwestern Kansas by Saturday morning. The ECMWF on
the other hand keeps advecting the low out of the area and only
strengthening it slightly, with the low positioned over northeastern
Colorado Saturday morning. The ECMWF keeps with a due northerly
track through Sunday, leading delayed impacts across the CWA. The
GFS on the other hand pushes the low off the the east by Sunday
morning with impacts occurring primarily Friday night into Saturday.
This system evolution will need to be monitored as these different
solutions lead to fairly different outcomes for snow and potentially
strong winds across the CWA.
One thing long range models agree on is very cold temperatures
returning to the region. The first cold front that is progged to
move through the region Tuesday afternoon through Tuesday night will
bring much colder 700mb temperatures to the region, between -10 to -
12C. This leads to the first real taste of winter as locations along
and west of I-25 will see highs in the 20s, with locations east
seeing highs in the 30s and low-40s in the warmest spots. These cold
temperature stick around Thursday, with Thursday morning lows in the
single digits to teens area-wide. Temperatures Thursday recover only
into the 20s to 40s across the region in the afternoon. The slight
warming trend continues Friday through the weekend, but most model
guidance seems far too warm Friday for highs. 700mb temperatures on
Friday increase to the -2C to 0C range, but this will vary
significantly based on where the 700mb low is placed. Therefore,
decreased Friday temperatures a few decrease as cooler temperatures
appear likely.

A messy storm system is moving through the area today and
tonight. The main aviation impacts will be in Wyoming, where low
clouds and snow showers are expected to produce IFR conditions at
KLAR and KRWL at times late this afternoon through the
overnight hours. Snow showers may extend as far east as KCYS,
but confidence is lower. Expect improving conditions early
Monday morning. Rain showers are also ongoing near KSNY and
KAIA, but conditions should remain VFR. However, an isolated
rumble of thunder cannot be ruled out. Gusty northerly winds
will continue through most of the TAF period at all High Plains
terminals.
