.SHORT TERM /THROUGH TUESDAY/...

The ongoing light snow across the region will continue over the
next 6 to 8hrs and drop anywhere between another 1-2". The
arctic air will be reinforced today as boundaries move across
the region. Today and tonight will be the another extremely cold
day, as daytime highs today are expected to range between -10
and -5F across the region.
Radar trends through much of the evening and the early morning
hours have shown a large area of light snow impacting all of SE
Wyoming and the western edge of the Nebraska Panhandle. Some
pulses of moderate snow have been flaring up near the frontal
boundary between Laramie and Cheyenne over the past hour with
this activity slowly moving south southeast. Expecting a
continuation of light snow with intermittent bursts of moderate
snow to continue through mid morning before we being to clear
out. With the snow continuing for another 6-8hrs, an additional
1-2" with pockets of 3" should fall before we end the snow by
the late afternoon when all the active winter weather highlights
are set to expire.
Another reinforcing surge of arctic air is progged to advect
into the region throughout the day today. It is possible that or
daytime high temperature may have already been set near midnight
but if we can break out of the clouds this afternoon and get
some sunlight then temperatures may increase slightly. Still
expecting temperatures in the -10 to -5F range today. Stiff
northerly winds will make those wind chills feel like -20 to -30
throughout the day as those winds are progged to pickup ahead of
this frontal boundary. The concern tonight for areas outside of
the influence of downslope winds, that with clearing skies and
light(ish) winds, temperatures could crater as some net
radiational cooling takes place with the fresh snowpack across
the region. With the expected development of breezy west winds,
some downsloping may occur along the I-25 corridor that may aid
in keeping temperatures from crashing too far, but temperatures
are still expected drop into the negative teens. With this
reinforcing shot of arctic air and breezy winds developing today
the Wind Chill warning will remain in affect through Tuesday
morning.
A High Wind Watch has been issued for the Arlington wind prone
and the I-80 Summit. HI-RES and in-house models continue to
advertise a localized high wind event beginning Tuesday with
the highest confidence being in the areas currently under the
High Wind Watch. In these areas parameters have stayed pretty
consistent from the previous forecast with both 850 and 700 mb
CAG-CPR gradients holding in the 50-70 meter range through the
expected time of high winds, with 700mb winds around 60 knots
overlapped with decent downward omega fields draped across the
area. Typically both wind prone areas seem to be paired together
most of the time when we talk about high winds, but the larger
synoptic setup this time around doesn't not favor the
development of high winds across the Bordeaux wind prone area,
with the main driver being the displacement of the longer wave
trough far enough to the west and the surface with weaker MSLP
gradients, and the downward omega fields not developing across
this area, so with the lower confidence decided to keep Bordeaux
out of the High Wind Watch for now. Added some additionally
impacts within the High Wind Watch to account for the
possibility for some blowing snow across portions of I-80 from
Arlington to the Summit. &&
.LONG TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...

The main potential impacts in the long term period concern the
strong winds and blowing snow mid-week, followed by a chance for
another round (or two) of snow and cold on Wednesday into Friday,
and lastly the long-awaited warmup for the weekend.
By Wednesday, the synoptic weather pattern over the CONUS will
feature the broad, upper level low responsible for this weekend's
cold drifting towards the Hudson Bay and setting up there for a few
days. A weak ridge tries to build into the west, setting up a
northwest flow regime over our area. Elevated pressure gradients as
high pressure builds into the interior Rockies will lead to ongoing
strong winds Wednesday. Probabilities for high winds during the day
Wednesday remain about 60% for the Arlington area. However, most
models show increasing surface pressure over the High Plains on
Wednesday, which leads to the surface trough retreating to just
right up against the crest of the Laramie Range. This reduces
probabilities of high wind for the I-80 summit area through the day
on Wednesday. If the surface high holds off a little longer though,
strong winds are certainly still possible with most guidance showing
700-mb winds in the 40 to 55-knot range in this area into Wednesday
night. Meanwhile, a progressive vort-max will race across the
northern Rockies Tuesday night, returning moist, westerly orographic
lift to our mountain areas around daybreak Wednesday. This kicks off
mountain snow showers during the day. Further east, we will still
have a remnant frontal boundary lingering over the high plains, and
some very weak overrunning flow may spread snow showers to the
plains Wednesday afternoon. This looks like mostly another dusting
to an inch or two type event, with higher probabilities of
accumulation further north in the forecast area.
Another shortwave will be right on the heels of the first one,
pushing over our area in the Thursday time period. This second wave
may try to merge with a lobe of vorticity rotating around the broad
Hudson Bay low. That would help support another arctic surface high
sliding down the east side of the Rockies and into our area on
Thursday. There is still quite a bit of uncertainty in the duration
and intensity of this cold snap. Uncertainty in the timing of the
frontal arrival on Thursday will also mean a fairly large spread in
high temperature forecast. For now, the most likely solution remains
that the front will push through our northern zones early, but wait
until the afternoon/evening to get through the windier areas further
south, so those areas still could have highs above freezing on
Thursday. This front is also likely to bring some decent
frontogenesis, with lift promoting snow shower activity once again
for the high plains. This round has a little higher potential, but
still probably sub-advisory for most areas. Most of this activity
should end by midnight or so Thursday night, leading into a drier
Friday across the area. Looks like a colder day Friday with the cold
surface high in place, but this one will be much weaker and shorter
lived than the current cold snap. Ridging aloft will translate
overhead by late Friday, with fairly good consensus on this. It may
take a little longer to kick out the surface high and warm up the
lower atmosphere, but nearly all ensemble members have this
occurring by Saturday. Expect near to even slightly above average
temperatures for the area on Saturday, though the warm-up could be a
little slower in our eastern counties. The ridge continues to shift
eastward through the weekend, possibly setting up southwest flow as
early as Sunday. A series of Pacific shortwaves may return mountain
snow showers to the picture for Sunday and Monday, but these could
easily fizzle out before arriving here, or take a track that
delivers the moisture elsewhere. Overall, this looks more like a
return to the general synoptic weather pattern we saw for much of
December and early January, before the current cold snap threw us a
curve ball.

Wyoming Terminals... A mixed bag of flight categories at this
time. KRWL is currently IFR with decreased visibility due to
blowing snow and mist. KLAR is MVFR with visibility decreased
due to light snow at this time, while KCYS is MVFR to VFR with a
ceiling right around 3,000ft AGL. Expect all terminals to clear
out over the next few hours with VFR conditions returning
everywhere by 20Z. Gusty winds expected this afternoon before
decreasing by evening and increasing again tomorrow. Should see
sunshine later today as ceilings begin to thin out and dissipate.
Nebraska Terminals... IFR conditions currently at KBFF, KCDR,
and KSNY due to a mixed bag of blowing and falling snow. Blowing
snow expected to be an issue at these terminals through 00-01Z
before winds decrease and blowing snow subsides. KAIA is
currently VFR and is expected to remain VFR as skies clear
within the next hour or so and blowing snow comes to an end
