.SYNOPSIS...
A strong storm system will push up the OH Valley and make a
wide variety of weather conditions and hazards through the
weekend and into Mon. Rain returns to the area tonight and
continues into Saturday night until a strong cold front moves
through. Gusty winds and much colder air arrive in its wake for
Sunday, supporting lake effect and upslope snow showers, and
possibly a few snow squalls, although surface temperatures are
not likely cold enough to support flash freezes on Sunday.
Temperatures will trend mild again next week as a stretch of
drier weather builds in.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 8 AM THIS MORNING/...
Going forecast in great shape for the overnight. Rain has
overspread the southwest third to half of central PA and will
rapidly overspread the remainder of the area over the next few
hours. Temps appear to have bottomed out across the north as
clouds continue to rapidly increase, so will boost mins up
slightly there to account for this as the rain moves in.

.SHORT TERM /8 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH 6 PM SUNDAY/...
By Saturday morning, the long wave trough to our west will
deepen/sharpen making way for a dynamic system to bring ample
moisture and multiple hazards to the region. Showers will
persist through much of the day on Saturday with recent guidance
landing on rainfall totals of 1-2 inches areawide. See the
hydro discussion for more details. There won't be any surface
based instability for the storm as the rain Sat AM and continued
cloud cover should keep us very stable. Maxes will only be in
the 40/l50s, and those numbers may be optimistic/high. As the
evening progresses, some elevated instability is expected to
pass over the SErn zones. That could make a rumble of thunder or
two - which would be the deep, scary kind of T since the llvls
will be very stable. No severe convective wind gusts are
expected, because any gusts would not reach the sfc.

Throughout the day on Saturday, winds will gust out of the
southeast. Gusts should generally be in the 20 to 30mph range
with a few stronger gusts possible at higher elevations. By
Saturday evening, a strong front (technically an occlusion) will
slam through the region and usher in some big changes. Ahead of
and along the boundary, winds will actually slacken up
considerably Saturday evening. In fact, this will likely also be
accompanied by a bit of a dry slot and a pleasant "lull". The
timing of this dry slot is rather uncertain, but a several hour
period of dry conditions is expected Saturday evening for
locations east of the Allegheny front. The front will cross
through by 06Z with a rapid drop in temperatures and uptick in
gusty westerly winds. There will be some snow accums by morning
on the western terrain. The initially warm ground/road temps
should help the roads not be icy until just before morning.
Temps will dip to the u20s by sunrise in the NW, and to about
40F in the Lower Susq.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Key Points:
- A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for Warren County valid
late Sat night through early Mon morning for up to 6 inches of
snow possible. The highest chance for heavy snow will be in the
NW corner of Warren County.
- Snow squalls may produce hazardous travel on Sunday with
  rapidly changing road conditions including reduced visibility, gusty
  winds, and icy roads.
- Prolonged 36 hour period of strong gusty winds Sunday-Monday

Cold advection will continue on Sunday as the surface low pulls
off to the northeast. The influx of cold air will result in
snow becoming the dominant precipitation type by mid morning for
most of central PA, although mixed precip is possible in any
showers that make it to the Susq Valley on eastward. With a
cold airmass aloft and the expectation of some breaks in the
clouds on Sunday, the Snow Squall Parameter indicates there is a
threat of snow squalls on Sunday. Scattered bursts of snow
and lake effect streamer bands could result in hazardous travel
on Sunday, especially in areas along, north, and west of the
I-80 and I-99 corridors. Temperatures in this area may be cold
enough to support roadway impacts in heavier bursts of snow.

Strong westerly winds will support lake effect/upslope snow
showers during the day on Sunday with snowfall amounts being
highest in the northwest mountains and Laurel Highlands
(generally 2-5 inches, but up to 6 inches possible locally in
NW Warren County if the true lake effect snow bands line up
there). A coating to an inch is possible for locations farther
south and east.

The main story on Sunday into Monday will be a 36 hour period
of strong west to northwest winds. As high pressure builds
behind the departing low, a tight pressure gradient will develop
across Pennsylvania. Latest guidance suggests 30+ mph wind
gusts begin Sunday morning and continue into Monday evening,
with the strongest winds likely Sunday night into Monday
afternoon, when gusts will be in the 40-55 mph range.

Any lingering snow showers early Monday morning will be more
confined to the northern sections of central PA as the
subsidence inversion makes the boundary layer more shallow.
Guidance shows clouds rapidly breaking up through the day
Monday, yielding a sunny but windy afternoon. A warming trend
will begin to emerge and continue through the end of the week,
with high temperatures shooting into the 60s Wed-Fri.

Precipitation chances return on Thu-Fri, although a wide range
in model solutions limits confidence this far out in the
forecast period.

.AVIATION /08Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Low cigs are continuing to spread from southwest to northeast
across the region ahead of the approaching low pressure system.
LLWS will increase and become most significant for BFD/JST/AOO
where 40-50KTs of LLWS is likely (80% chc).

As the wind just aloft continues to advect in much more
moisture, the rain will get heavier into the afternoon on
Saturday. Cigs will drop to IFR or eventually LIFR everywhere.
Confidence is increasing for heavy rains to significantly reduce
visibilities through the TAF period. Some improvements are
possible just after 00Z Sunday, mainly in SE PA. There is a
small (20%) chc for TS as the front passes through, mainly over
MDT and LNS.

Deep cold air is expected to advect in behind the cold front.
SHRA will turn to SHSN over the wrn mtns (JST and BFD) before
sunrise Sun. The wind picks up significantly with gusts rising
to 35-45KT on Sun and Mon. Lake effect and upslope SHSN will
drop many sites to IFR from time to time Sun into early Mon --
mainly BFD and JST. MVFR cigs and vsbys are highly likely for
AOO- UNV- IPT during that same time.

Outlook...

Mon...Still breezy with NW wind 15-20KT G25-30KT. Clearing
skies, becmg VFR.

Tues...Lighter NW wind, but not <10KT. VFR.

Wed...No sig wx.

.HYDROLOGY...
PWAT increases to more than 0.75" N and near 1" S Sat
aftn/evening (+2 std devs). While the llvls are highly stable,
there is a signal for repeated showers to bring 1.5" or more of
rainfall to the central mtns. Latest 00Z HREF probability
matched mean guidance paints a widespread 1-1.5 inches with
local enhancements along upslope regions north and east of
ridgetops thanks to persistent southeasterly flow. Lighter
amounts are most likely in the nrn tier (generally around an
inch).

A lack of instability will preclude heavy rainfall rates,
but the persistence of light to moderate showers over several
hours could result in isolated flooding across the region. 6
hour flash flood guidance is highest in the southeast (2"+) but
more attainable across the central mountains (approximately 1.5"
on average). As such, a Marginal Risk of excessive rainfall is
in effect for all of Central PA. From a river standpoint,
several foot rises are likely on smaller streams and creeks in
response to the rainfall, with crests happening on Sunday.
Larger rivers will not crest until early next week. Headwater
guidance from the River Forecast Center indicates that some of
the flashier streams could reach minor flood stage if basin-
average rainfall amounts exceed 1.5" in a 6 hour window,
although current forecasts are for crests above caution stage at
several points. It is worth noting that current river flows are
low, which is certainly a factor in keeping river flood risk low
at this time.
