.SYNOPSIS...
A few snow flurries are lingering across the northern tier of
the state this evening as a weak disturbance moves NE of PA.
Another multi-hazard winter storm will impact the area Friday
into Saturday with wind, rain, and snow. Lake effect snow and
blustery conditions over the weekend will mark the start of a
colder pattern into mid January with below normal temperatures
and frigid wind chills expected next week.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...
A few light snow showers are continuing across north western
portions of PA this evening as the short wave that moved across
southern Ontario continues to push towards the north and east.
These snow showers should dissipate by midnight.

The remaining overnight hours will be dry, with lingering
clouds over northern PA and clear-partly cloudy skies from about
I-78/US-22 on south. Winds will shift to become more easterly
ahead of the storm system expected to reach the region by Friday
afternoon. Lows by daybreak will range in the 20s to low 30s.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH 6 PM SATURDAY/...
Overall latest guidance has reinforced confidence on the
strength and timing of the system expected to reach the central
PA area on Friday afternoon. An area of note that was not
previously mentioned is the possibility of gusty SE winds late
Friday night into early Saturday associated with the frontal
passage in the Susquehanna Valley and along our eastern CWA.
Guidance currently suggest 40-45 knot gusts are possible ahead
of the colder air.

Previous Discussion...

As previously mentioned another multi-hazard event is on-deck
from Friday afternoon into Saturday, as a deep surface low,
supported by a negatively tilted upper-level trough, lifts
through the upper Midwest into western Ontario.

A strong S-SE low-level jet will be in place tomorrow and fuel
both gusty winds and a leading shot of warm advection
precipitation. From about I-80 northward, precipitation type
will initially take the form of snow, and some heavier snow
bands are expected given strong forcing. The combination of 2-5"
accumulations and very gusty winds justifies a Winter Weather
Advisory for the northern tier Friday afternoon and evening.

As earlier mentioned, strong winds will also be a concern, with
the Alleghenies and Laurels most under the gun for 40-50+ knot
gusts. We've opted for a High Wind Warning for the Laurel
Highlands and a Wind Advisory for the northern Alleghenies and
northwestern PA.

We feel lower QPF trends in recent model runs and rapid system
motion should limit rainfall enough to prevent future flooding
problems. Thus, we did not issue a Flood Watch. Rain will be
steadiest during the evening hours, but should cut off by or
shortly after midnight.

On Saturday, colder air will move in, leading to slowly falling
temperatures over time, and accompanied upslope and lake
enhanced snow showers. Winds will ramp up again Saturday from
the west. We'll give this a closer look with future model runs,
before making a final decision on possible wind headlines
Saturday.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Late evening update holds mainly changes to make sure to cap
PoPs at 50pct in the Tuesday-ish time frame. Lots of spread
among GFS and ECMWF - and inside the GEFS members - as to the
track of a potential ECSS for mid-week. The most certain part of
this forecast is that the cold air in place from the invasion
on Sunday should keep it cold no matter what happens with a sfc
low which may or may not roll up the coast. We haven't see a day
with the high temp in the teens for almost a year in State
College, PA. That looks like it could happen mid-week with
highs only in the 20s for most of the week. It would be more
certain if we were to have a good snowpack on the ground.

*Coldest air so far this winter poised to invade Sunday and
 persist through the middle of next week.*

Lingering lake-effect snow showers across northern and western
PA will gradually dissipate on Sunday, as a weak area of high
pressure builds in. Sunday will be a chilly day, however, with
high temperatures running 5 to 15 degrees below average for mid
January.

Long-range models continue to produce a synoptic snowfall
across central PA next week, but the timing has trended a bit
later. Low pressure is progged to develop off the southeast
coast of the United States and track north- northeastward. The
current timing is Tuesday into Wednesday.

The extended range models are in good agreement that it will
remain cold through the middle of next week, with a reinforcing
shot of cold air arriving on Tuesday night behind the departing
low. Temperature departures will be in the -5 to -15F range
compared to normal corresponding to low temperatures in the
single digits to teens and high temperatures in the teens to low
30s.

.AVIATION /07Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
A deck of stratus persists across the northern tier of PA this
evening, with a broken deck developing immediately to the south
across the Laurels and Ridge and Valley regions. Cigs are mostly
MVFR within these cloud decks, but IFR cigs are possible at
BFD. Elsewhere, conds will remain VFR. Winds will be from 270 to
310 during the first part of the night, with gusts of 15 to 20
kts. This wind direction should keep lake effect snow showers
north of BFD overnight. Winds will taper off during the predawn
hours and shift to 100-130 by Friday morning.

Conditions will improve areawide Friday morning with
strengthening southeasterly winds gusting 30 to 50 kts during
the afternoon and evening - highest in the Laurels and the
Lower Susq. There is a large degree of uncertainty in the wind
gust potential due to uncertainty in the strength of the low
level temperature inversion. LLWS will also be a concern. Snow,
sleet, and rain arrives from southwest to northeast Friday
evening with widespread MVFR/IFR restrictions overnight.

Several mainstem Susquehanna River points have crested or are
forecast to crest near or above action stage. These points will
likely remain elevated into the weekend given the next round of
heavy rainfall forecast to bring renewed but less certain
flooding concerns Friday night into Saturday for the lower
Susquehanna tribs.

Snow or a wintry mix will overspread the area late Friday afternoon
into Friday evening, before changing over to rain late Friday
evening into Friday night. Some minor snow accumulation is possible
before the precipitation changes over to rain.

The steady rain could cause ponding of water is possible in area of
poor drainage, with wet antecedent conditions and already high stream
levels possibly resulting in creeks coming out of their banks.
