.SYNOPSIS...
A low pressure system over Lake Huron will continue northeast
into Canada today and slowly bring a cold front east across the
area. Another area of low pressure will develop to the south
along the cold front this afternoon and deepen as it moves into
the New England states for Sunday. A residual trough with a
reinforcing cold front will move through the region on Sunday
behind this system.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SUNDAY/...
9:30 AM Update...
The cold front has just moved east to the vicinity of I-71, with
rain along and ahead of this cold front. Precipitation sharply
ends behind this cold front, so tightened the gradient with our
PoPs, to have PoPs quickly drop off much quicker as confidence
in timing is higher. For the Wind Advisory in Erie, PA, wind
gusts have been quite a bit lower than previously forecast, with
peak gusts at or below 40 mph. Even so, hi-res models still
suggest 45-50 mph winds possible through about 16Z before
dropping off quickly. Should be able to cancel the Wind Advisory
early this afternoon. For the Winter Storm Watch, will be taking
a look at the 12Z suite of model guidance before considering an
upgrade to watch and adjacent areas something this afternoon.

Previous Discussion...
The near term forecast period features a multifaceted weather
pattern with three stages of notable weather through Sunday
afternoon. For today, the main feature will be a low pressure
system located near Saginaw Bay and extending a cold front south
along the Ohio and Indiana border this morning. The low
pressure system will quickly northeast into Canada with a mid-
level vorticity maximum carrying it away from the region.
However, the cold front will be slower to translate east across
the forecast area today, as another wave in the upper level
pattern helps generate another low pressure system over the
southeastern United States. Meanwhile, rain continues in a
south-southwest to north-northeast motion ahead of the front
with the mean low level flow. Therefore, while the back edge of
rain is already reaching the state line with the cold front, it
will take the entire day for this back edge to reach the eastern
edge of the forecast area and have 100 PoPs for today to reflect
this for much of the area. New rainfall amounts will be up to
around one half of an inch or so and total rain across the area
will be up to one inch, which should not prompt any water issues
at this time. In the warm sector of the low pressure system
today, mainly this morning, a strong low level jet is moving
across the region and will mix down somewhat with the rain. Wind
gusts are in the 20 to 30 mph range this morning and may climb a
bit further. With the favorable south to southeast downslope
flow in NW PA, wind gusts are expected to reach 50 mph and a
Wind Advisory remains valid until 4 PM this afternoon. High
temperatures have likely already occurred across much of the
area today. Daytime high temperatures will mostly be in the
morning ahead of the cold front generally in the 50s.

The next phase of the forecast is late this afternoon through
the first part of tonight behind the cold front. There is a
fairly significant loss of mid-level moisture across the region
that should allow for a window of dry weather conditions for
much of the area. Shallower moisture across the region will keep
clouds around and with the cold advection over Lake Erie, light
lake enhanced rain will continue in the NE OH/NW PA snow belt.
Overall, the PoPs in this window have been chopped back quite a
bit to reflect this reprieve in any rain or snow.

The final portion of the forecast will be from midnight tonight
through Sunday, as snow makes a triumphant return in March to
remind all of us that winter isn't over yet. For the pre-dawn
hours on Sunday, cold air advection across the region will be
cold enough to begin changing over any rain to snow and lake
effect processes should begin with -10 to -12 C 850 mb
temperatures across the entire region. Moisture remains very
shallow (largely below 800 mb) and initial snowfall rates and
amounts will be generally poor with saturation not getting into
the DGZ with the lack of deeper moisture. Surface temperatures
will also be marginal during the onset of snow as air
temperatures will still be falling toward freezing. Therefore,
the forecast will have a trace to an inch across the forecast
area, but most, if not all, of this snow will probably be low
impact. However, the main snow show will arrive with daybreak on
Sunday as a TROWAL curls back into the region with ample mid-
level moisture to allow for snow development to be more
meaningful. Snow should move across the entire forecast area
with this feature on Sunday, but snow development will be most
focused downwind of Lake Erie, where there will be a fair amount
of lake induced instability to allow for more convective snow.
In fact, with the setup across the NE OH and NW PA snow belt
late Sunday morning into Sunday afternoon, there appears to be a
good isothermal layer that will develop within the DGZ that may
allow for some efficient snowfall rates. While there will be
synoptic lift and moisture that will be the key to getting this
event going, the snowfall efficiency and amounts will be most
honed in on areas with favorable lake effect fetch and upslope
with the hills of NE OH and NW PA - A true hybrid type of snow
event. Much like the previous forecast, the most favorable snow
areas will be Northwest Pennsylvania and Geauga County, OH with
the mean WNW flow and favorable terrain for upslope. For now,
have kept all of these zones with the Winter Storm Watch and
expanded the watch to include all of Erie County PA, as
longevity of snow in the eastern lakeshore could rack up a total
close to warning amounts. Could have upgraded the PA watches
for southern Erie and northern Crawford to warnings this
morning, as the overall parameters for the event should favor
over 6 inches. However, confidence for other current watch areas
is lower at the moment and piece-mealing the warnings with
still 30 hours or so until the main show just felt like a more
confusing message. Winter Weather Advisories will be needed
around current watch areas. Anticipate final level winter
headlines to be hoisted with future packages as confidence in 4+
and 6+ inch snow totals becomes clearer. With the main trough
moving through the region and well behind the cold front, winds
will increase for Sunday and wind gusts in the 35 to 45 mph
range will be expected. Wind chill values into the teens are
possible on Sunday with the continued cooling temperatures.

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...
Closed upper level low over Central Pennsylvania at 00Z Monday
shifts off the East Coast by 12Z. As this occurs, moisture quickly
pulls away to the east on Sunday night. We do expect some snow
showers to still be ongoing across NE Ohio and Northwest
Pennsylvania on Sunday evening but by Midnight this will largely be
confined to NW Pennsylvania with snow showers rapidly diminishing.
Nearly all models suggest we lose moisture at 850mb between 06-09Z
Monday and trended pops and accumulations down for the second half
of the night. Deeper subsidence is expected to win out with skies
mostly sunny by Monday morning aside from a little cloud cover
lingering in Pennsylvania. A ridge expands north into the Ohio
Valley on Monday with winds backing to westerly or southwesterly by
afternoon. The cold airmass that was overhead on Sunday will move
east with the trough on Monday with high temperatures recovering 10-
15 degrees. This warm up is the beginning of a pattern change with
the upper level ridge returning. Highs on Tuesday are expected to
reach the mid-50s, even with the fresh snow cover while western
areas are back into the mid 60s. A rapid snow melt is expected with
mostly sunny skies through at least the morning.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
There is high confidence in above normal temperatures through the
extended forecast. Most days will feature highs in the 60s as the
ridge aloft becomes more pronounced in response to a trough
deepening in the Four Corners region. While moisture does start to
increase Wednesday into Thursday, a stalled front is draped across
the Central Great Lakes and generally remains far enough north that
better chances for showers hold off until Friday when low pressure
approaches the region.

.AVIATION /18Z Saturday THROUGH Thursday/...
The cold front continues to make eastward progress across the
area, just recently moving across KERI and KCAK. Rain showers
along with IFR ceilings and IFR/MVFR visibilities persist along
and ahead of this cold front. After the frontal passage,
observations tend to improve to MVFR ceilings. Locations with
IFR conditions (e.g. KERI/KYNG) should improve to MVFR by this
evening).

Moisture builds back in tonight, with scattered rain showers
developing after 00Z. Cold air filters in from the west with a
transition to snow showers after 06Z. Snow showers become more
widespread after 12Z especially downwind of Lake Erie in
Northeast Ohio and Northwest Pennsylvania where periodic IFR
visibilities, accumulating snow and patchy blowing snow is
possible through Sunday afternoon. Elsewhere, snow showers are
expected but IFR visibilities are expected to be more isolated.

As the cold front moves east of the area by 20Z, west to
northwest winds of 10-12 knots with gusts to 20 knots are
expected this afternoon through the overnight period. Winds
increase to 20 knots during the day Sunday with gusts up to 30
knots. Brief, isolated gusts to 35 knots will be possible,
especially during the afternoon.

Outlook...Non-VFR with snow showers continues in Northeast Ohio
and Northwest Pennsylvania Sunday night. Non-VFR is possible
with isolated rain showers Wednesday through Thursday.

.MARINE...
A Small Craft Advisory remains in effect for the nearshore waters
off Erie, PA where southerly winds of 15 to 25 knots are expected
today. The offshore flow means the waves will be highest in the
outer portions of the nearshore waters with near 2 to 4 feet.

A cold front crosses Lake Erie this afternoon and evening with west
northwest winds really increasing overnight as colder air arrives
behind the front. Northwest winds increase to 25-30 knots and a
Small Craft Advisory has been issued from the Islands eastward. We
will eventually need to expand the Advisory across the remaining
nearshore waters but they take a little longer to reach criteria so
thought we could wait until the Advisory for the southerly winds
ends. Once winds and wave pick up tonight, Small Craft conditions
will persist all the way into Monday. Kept winds at 30 knots on Lake
Erie but can not rule out a conditions briefly approaching gale
force, mainly on Sunday afternoon and evening.

A ridge builds into the Ohio Valley on Monday with winds backing to
southwesterly and decreasing. Fairly good marine conditions are
expected through the mid-week period as warm air and southerly winds
overspreads Lake Erie.
