.SYNOPSIS...
A disturbance pushes across the region tonight into Thursday
with a low pressure moving east across the area Thursday night
through Friday. A trough lingers across the area through
Saturday before an Arctic high returns to the region by Sunday.
This high departs to the east coast early next week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
9:30 PM Update...
Via latest observational data, the lake effect snow band over
eastern Lake Erie has been slow to sag south. Additionally,
model guidance has also trended slower, so slashed PoPs, QPF,
and snow along the lakeshore through the next several hours.

Previous Discussion...
The first few hours of the near term period will feature the
last few hours of widespread dry weather for the next several
days.

A band of lake effect snow over Lake Erie should begin to sag south
this evening with light snow showers potentially clipping the Erie,
PA lakeshore later this evening, but do not anticipate any
significantly impactful accumulations since the most organized
precip will most likely remain over the lake. A shortwave will
lift across the local area late tonight into Thursday morning
with widespread snow showers spreading across the local area
starting at about 4 AM Thursday and gradually exiting to the
northeast Thursday afternoon. Forecast soundings indicate
significant low to mid level dry air in the southern half of the
area, so PoPs and forecast snow accumulations are quite low in
comparison to the northern half of the CWA. With that being
said, temps and moisture aloft (most notably in the DGZ) will be
quite marginal in northern zones so snow may struggle to grow
and thus accumulate in this area, which could result in less
snowfall than currently forecast. Moisture appears to be most
favorable across NW zones including the Toledo metro area and
across NW PA, where 1 to 3 inches of snow may accumulate between
06Z and 18Z. This could impact the morning commute if any
moderate snowfall rates manage to develop. Can't rule out
locally higher amounts up to 4 inches across NW OH and near the
lakeshore and higher terrain of NE OH/NW PA if snowfall rates
over-perform, but confidence in snowfall amounts and resulting
impacts is too low to warrant the issuance of a Winter Weather
Advisory at this time.

A brief lull in precip will develop across most of the area Thursday
afternoon as the snow shifts east of the area, but there still may
be some light snow showers into the evening hours with additional
snow accumulations remaining below an inch.

Widespread snow arrives from the west Thursday night as a
shortwave pushes southeast from the Upper Midwest and interacts
with a weak surface low moving northeast out of the Ohio Valley.
Moisture and lift will be much more favorable during this time
so widespread accumulations of 1 to 3 inches are expected
between 06Z and 12Z Friday morning with the highest amounts
likely from roughly Wood to Hancock County east and northeast to
a line from roughly Marion County to far western Cuyahoga
County. The higher snowfall amounts will be due to lake
enhancement from somewhat unusual northeast flow off of Lake
Erie. A Winter Storm Watch is in effect starting at 06Z/1 AM
Friday. See the Short Term discussion below for more details on
the watch.

Compared to the last few days, temperatures may be considered
balmy to some, however below normal temps continue through
Thursday night. Thursday's high temps will be in the mid 20s and
lighter winds will allow apparent temperatures to improve from
the single digits during the early morning to the teens by the
afternoon. Lows will be in the teens tonight and Thursday
night, but a few spots in southeastern zones where there will be
some better warm air advection may remain near 20 degrees
Thursday night.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
Weather Headlines Friday into Saturday
* Winter Storm Watch for portions of north central and northeast Ohio
* Widespread accumulating for northern Ohio and northwest Pennsylvania
* Synoptic snowfall with lake enhancement for north-central and
  northeast Ohio
* Transitioning to lake effect snow late Friday into Saturday for
  snowbelt

Confidence is increasing for widespread accumulating snowfall across
the entire area on Friday. An upper level shortwave will track
across the southern Great Lakes region on Friday. A weak surface low
pressure will develop in the central Ohio Valley and track eastward
on Friday. Model guidance is showing good moisture and lift in the
snow growth zone on Friday across much of the area associated with
the synoptic system. Model guidance is also indicating elements of
lake enhancement snow across portions of north central and northeast
Ohio for the secondary Snowbelt with the northerly flow off Lake
Erie. With the synoptic snow and potential for lake enhancement on
top of that, we have issued a Winter Storm Watch for portions of
north central and northeast Ohio where the greater chance of seeing
over 6 inches of snowfall during this event. Outside of the watch
area, the synoptic snow will add up to 2 to 5 inches. In the watch
area, we could see 4 to 8 inches with isolated higher amounts where
lake enhancement or lake effect snow persist. We are averaging
around 20 to 1 snowfall ratio with this snowfall event.  Travel will
be impacted on Friday, especially during the morning and evening
commutes.

The system snow will move out late Friday afternoon or evening and
transition to lake effect snow impacting both the primary and
secondary snowbelt regions Friday night into Saturday. The level low
flow will be very cold air with northerly flow at first. This may
play into a Lake Huron connection as well Friday night into
Saturday. The low level flow will become northwesterly by late
Friday night into Saturday. There could be additional scattered
flurries or light snow showers across all of northern Ohio on
Saturday with little to no additional accumulations expected. The
primary snowbelt will still have ongoing lake effect snow on
Saturday lasting into Saturday night. Additional snowfall is
expected during this time. High temps on Friday will be in the 20s
and in the teens on Saturday. Low temps will be in the single digits
to middle teens.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
High pressure will build in on Sunday. Any lingering lake effect
should end by Sunday morning. The weather will be quiet late Sunday
through Monday. Temperatures will start a slow climb going into
early next week. We might break the freezing mark by Monday
afternoon. Temperatures will further warm to above average in the
40s by next Tuesday and Wednesday. The next weather system will
arrive by Tuesday with rain in the forecast.

.AVIATION /06Z Thursday THROUGH Monday/...
Ceilings remain VFR at the start of the period. Snow is
developing upstream from NW Indiana back towards Chicago. A
very dry sub cloud layer will likely delay the onset of this
snow and slowed down arrival times a little at some terminals.
Generally speaking, snow will fill in along an arc from
TOL/YNG/ERI around 11-12Z. The snow will lift north and most
terminals south of this line will only see very light snow
showers later this morning/early afternoon with limited
reduction to visibility. Tried to time a window of IFR into both
TOL and ERI where the best chances for snow are expected.
Otherwise, ceilings will lower to MVFR after snow begins or at
other terminals through the afternoon.

Another stronger system is expected to bring widespread snow to
the area towards the end of the TAF cycle. The snow will arrive
in northwest Ohio around 03Z, CLE towards 05Z, and ERI by 09Z.
Expect widespread IFR ceilings and visibilities with snow
persisting into at least Friday afternoon and longer in the
snowbelt.

Winds will generally be 12 knots or less out of the south
through the period, with a few stronger gusts at ERI. Winds
eventually back to northeasterly as low pressure moves into the
Ohio Valley Thursday night.

9:30 PM Update...
Winds have diminished and water levels on the western basin have
improved, so the gale warning and low water advisory have been
expired. A small craft advisory east of Avon Point has been
hoisted through Thursday afternoon to replace the gale warning.

Previous Discussion...
We have left the current headlines on the lake as is with this
afternoon marine update. The Gale warnings will likely be dropped
later this evening and transition to small craft advisories for all
of the nearshore water later this evening. We are still watching the
low water levels on the western basin through this evening. They are
close or hovering just above the critical mark of 8 inches above the
low water datum. A general lull in the stronger winds is expected
Thursday and Thursday night. Strong cold air advection will bring
marine headlines back into action Friday into the weekend.

Ice is generally thin but extensive west of the islands, with some
ice growth occurring into the central basin east of the islands. Ice
will push offshore to the northeast today with the strong southwest
flow. Moderate to rapid ice growth will continue through this
weekend across the central basin with some shore ice farther
east.
