.SYNOPSIS...
A low pressure system will deepen as it moves northeast across the
Great Lakes today and tonight, extending a strong cold front
east across the area on Saturday. A surface trough and arctic
air mass will linger across the Great Lakes through the weekend
and into early next week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Early-Afternoon Update:

1) Upgraded all of our Northwest Ohio Counties points east
across the Mansfield, Wooster, and Akron areas to a High Wind
Warning. Also expanded the warning a bit along the lakeshore
into Geauga and Ashtabula Inland...Geauga in particular gets
tree damage in these types of setups. There will be a brief
push of stronger winds this evening...a bit of a lull
overnight...and another uptick in winds on Saturday. Gusts up to
60 MPH are possible at times in the warning area.

2) Still monitoring the potential for a brief thump of wet snow
near Toledo and across inland Northwest Pennsylvania late this
afternoon into this evening. The Toledo area has warmed into the
mid-upper 30s and so far the incoming precip is falling as
mainly rain to their south but mainly snow just to the west. As
the precip continues to intensify and push into somewhat cooler
air across Northwest OH will see if more snow results...could
be worth a Special Wx Statement to highlight if so. Northwest
PA will be in a similar boat early this evening, though with
lower dew points in that area they may have greater odds of
flipping to all snow (briefly) and accumulating an inch or two,
especially in the higher terrain east of I-79.

-Headline Changes
We expanded the High Wind Warning to include Cuyahoga, Lake,
and northern Ashtabula Counties. Confidence increased in 60 mph
wind gusts with southeast flow this afternoon, as well as
southwest flow off of Lake Erie on Saturday (this part is
probably more reserved to the lakeshore). There is still a
chance more expansions may be needed later today, especially
along and west of I-71.

-Other Notable Forecast Changes
Latest hi-res model guidance has a little bit more snow in
Northwest Ohio, including Toledo and vicinity. Think there is a
good chance for a quick inch of wet snow this afternoon before
it changes over to rain and melts. Model guidance has also
trended cooler in parts of interior Northeast Ohio and Northwest
Pennsylvania this afternoon. Some Ohio counties (e.g. Geauga,
Ashtabula, and Trumbull) may be able to see a brief wintry mix
before switching over to rain. Parts of eastern Erie and
Crawford may be able to accumulate a quick 1-2" of wet snow
before transitioning to wintry mix and then all rain by this
evening.

Weather Forecast Discussion
As we have been discussing for many days now, an upper-level
trough and associated surface low moves northeast across the
Great Lakes region tonight and tomorrow, bringing rain (and as
mentioned above, brief snow to Toledo area and parts of
Northeast Ohio and Northwest Pennsylvania) and strong winds to
the region. Precipitation overspreads the area from the
southwest this afternoon, scattering out from the southwest as a
dry slot develops. Southeast winds strengthen this morning,
reaching peak intensity late this afternoon and evening alongside
the batch of precipitation that overspreads the area. Southeast
winds will likely reach at least sporadically 50+ mph areawide
this afternoon/evening, with stronger winds of 60+ mph expected
near the lakeshore from Cuyahoga to Erie, PA (where the high
wind warning will be in effect).

Some hi-res model guidance has precipitation becoming more
showery with the dry slot within the LLJ, with some convective
elements in modeled reflectivity and descending motion within
the dry slot. It seems like there could be a short-fused
opportunity for stronger winds where either this descending LLJ,
or convection/shower activity more efficiently brings stronger
winds down to the surface. The cold front associated with the
departing low moves across the area tonight, with cold air
advection with southwest flow increasing. Wrap-around moisture
moves into the area, with snow showers moving across the area
and southwest winds increasing, with wind gusts of 50+ mph
expected areawide with some pockets of 60+ mph possible,
especially west of I-71.

Some lake enhancement is expected on Saturday, especially
closer to the lakeshore as temperatures aloft rapidly cool,
aiding in building lake-induced instability. Lake enhancement
within southwest flow that parallels Lake Erie will likely only
initially help the lakeshore portion of the snowbelt (including
Lake, northern Ashtabula, and northern Erie, PA). Areawide,
expect snow totals of 1.5" or less, and then up to 2.5" in the
primary snowbelt. It should be said though that the impact of
this should not be understated as air temperatures drop into the
mid 20s by Saturday morning (and stay there all day), which
should make it very easy for snow to accumulate on all surfaces.
The strong winds will reduce visibilities more than normal
within any snow that falls, and will blow around any snow
accumulations, making it difficult to keep roads cleared of
snow.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
The short term forecast will be largely be focused on the winds and
snow of the first half of the period before transitioning to a more
lake effect dominated snow event. The main low pressure system that
will impact the region for Friday and Saturday will depart to the
north by Saturday night and leave a residual surface trough with
cold air advection continuing to control the region. Strong winds
will persist with the pressure gradient of the trough, but these
winds should be reduced from the main show Friday night into
Saturday and at some point Saturday night the wind headline will be
dropped. The focus will then be on snow potential with the surface
trough and lake enhancement. The low level flow seems to favor a
southwest direction for much of the weekend and much of the snow
will be driven over Lake Erie and into western New York instead of
over NW PA or NE OH. Have some high PoPs as some snow will get into
the typical snow belt areas but the accumulations will be minor
overall and hard pressed to even see a Winter Weather Advisory at
this point unless the mean low level flow veers significantly. Have
some PoPs across the board with some upper level energy moving
through the region that may support some scattered snow showers
everywhere, especially Saturday night and Sunday morning. Some dry
air and some slight backing in winds will continue to drive snow
away from the region and have a down trend in the lake-enhanced PoPs
but some snow from a system from the southeast may try to get into
the forecast area by the end of Monday. Temperatures through the
period will be typical, below-normal, mid-January temperatures with
teens for highs and runs at single digits for lows. Wind chills
every night will make a run at the negative double digits and there
will be a need to evaluate wind chill headlines going forward.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
A persistent active pattern will continue for the middle of the week
with several upper level waves moving through the region with a
general upper trough persistent over the eastern CONUS. The main
show will be a low pressure system moving northeast along the East
Coast on Tuesday and the forecast area will be on the northwest
periphery of this system, which will allow for some snow activity
and perhaps some lake effect snow behind the system for the middle
of the week. Have some PoPs everyday with the highest in the NE
OH/NW PA snow belt for continued snow chances through the period,
which will be better refined with time. Cold air will continue to
reinforce winter across the region with below normal temperatures
for the middle of next week with highs in the 20s and lows in the
teens. The exception may be Tuesday night with some breaks in the
clouds and a better push of cold air advection, where single digit
lows will be possible and enough wind in the region to merit some
negative double digit wind chills.

.AVIATION /18Z Friday THROUGH Wednesday/...
A strong low pressure system approaches from the southwest today
and moves into Michigan tonight, bringing rain and wind to the
region this afternoon and tonight. The leading edge of
precipitation lifts northeast across the area late this
afternoon/evening, with MVFR/IFR ceilings and IFR (potentially
LIFR) visibilities concurrent with the onset and continuation of
rainfall. Could see a bit of snow mix in across interior
Northeast Ohio, far Northeast Ohio, and Northwestern PA at the
onset and have this included in a few sites. Out of the TAF
sites, TOL seems most at risk for a quick burst of snow before
changing back to rain. Conditions improve to MVFR across the
board 0-4z from west to east as steadier rain exits. Light
wrap-around snow showers wrap in late tonight into Saturday. Not
expecting heavy snow, though lake enhancement may contribute to
a period of more moderate snow along the eastern lakeshore,
including ERI. Any snow that falls will blow around and bring
MVFR to perhaps brief IFR visibility, though it generally looks
light outside of any lake enhancement.

Impactful winds are expected with this low pressure system today
and tonight. Winds begin increasing out of the southeast late
this morning, peaking this evening (between 22Z/Fri - 04Z/Sat)
at 20-25 knots sustained with gusts as high as 45 knots. It is
possible that there could be pockets of stronger wind gusts and
one spot that this very likely is Erie County PA where
downsloping winds could enhance the southeast flow to 50+ kts,
especially 23Z-02Z. Winds gradually shift to out of the
southwest late tonight. Gusts likely lull into the 30-40 knot
range overnight, before coming back up to 40-50 knots beginning
around 12z/7am Saturday area-wide.

Elected to add a brief period of low-level wind shear to several
TAF sites late this afternoon or this evening during the
steadiest precipitation. The low-level jet will really ramp up
during this time, and steadier precipitation will likely
stabilize the low-levels enough to keep the winds from mixing
well...hence the LLWS risk. As steadier precip exits mixing
should improve later this evening.

Outlook...Snow showers on Saturday transition to lake effect
snow across the primary snow belt of Northeast Ohio and
Northwest Pennsylvania Saturday night and Sunday. Snow showers
are possible again areawide on Tuesday.

.MARINE...
The marine weather will be extremely active through early next week
and multiple rounds of headlines will be expected with each weather
system moving through the region. A strong low pressure system has
developed over the southern United States and will move northeast
toward the Great Lakes region tonight into Saturday. This system
will continue to deepen significantly and southeast winds ahead of
the system tonight and southwest winds behind the system for
Saturday into Sunday will be strong with widespread gales and these
warnings have already been issued. With the strong southwest flow,
winds will push water away from the western basin and a seiche will
develop across the lake with water rises over the eastern end of the
lake. Low water advisories have been issued for the western basin
into Sunday. The main low will exit on Sunday and a residual trough
will remain over the region while high pressure attempts to build in
from the west. The resulting pressure gradient should be enough to
have some small craft advisory worthy conditions remain over the
lake into Monday and can see the gale warnings be replaced with
small craft advisories down the road. The area will be between
systems for late Monday into Tuesday and winds should relax a touch
before low pressure moves southeast of the region for the middle of
next week. There could be a brief period without a small craft
advisory headline on the lake but too early to tell how long this
may be. Cold air across the region will support lake effect
precipitation, especially over the eastern basin. This cold air will
also support some ice development, which could be hindered through
the weekend with the strong winds.
