.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will continue to build over the area through
Saturday before a low pressure moves northeast from the Gulf
Coast, impacting the area Saturday night into Sunday. A surface
trough will linger on Monday before another system impacts the
area on Tuesday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
1:15 AM EST Update...
Based on trends in observations, including webcam imagery, and
the expectation of continued downward expansion of the stratus
deck amidst limited nocturnal cooling through daybreak this
morning, a strong subsidence inversion, abundant moisture
trapped below the inversion, and very weak or calm surface winds
in our CWA, decided to expand the Dense Fog Advisory to have it
encompass most of northern OH and all of NW PA. The advisory is
in effect until 11 AM EST this morning for all pertinent marine
and land zones. Will continue to monitor trends in obs and model
guidance for potential further expansion of the advisory.

Previous Discussion...
This afternoon, a cold front drift east of the area, allowing
for an uptick in winds from the west briefly. Although a high
pressure system has begun to build over the area and has brought
drier conditions aloft, the airmass near the surface remains
quite moist. This low level moisture coupled with winds
continuing to weaken to light and variable tonight will result
in widespread fog again. Highest confidence in dense fog
occurring is west of I71 where winds have already weakened and
temperatures are a bit cooler and closer to saturation. As a
result, a Dense Fog Advisory has been issued from 7PM tonight
through 11 AM Saturday. There remains a potential for this
advisory to be extended further eastward, but with lower
confidence opted to not do that with this update. Overnight lows
will be in the mid to upper 30s.

On Saturday, a deepening upper level trough across the central
US will continue to strengthen a surface low near the Gulf
Coast. This low will track northeast towards the area on
Saturday, introducing the potential for showers near 7PM
Saturday, especially along the southern tier of counties. These
showers will continue to push north, becoming widespread
Saturday night. Prior to the shower development on Saturday,
there will remain a potential for fog to linger across portions
of the area. Highs on Saturday will reach into the low 40s.

Parts of this forecast remain a bit tricky, especially when it
comes to precip type and timing of the change from rain to snow
Saturday night. A strong area of upper level divergence will
occur over the area north of the surface low allowing for
a good source of lift. At the surface, winds will become
sustained from the northeast, allowing for colder air to push
across Lake Erie and into northern Ohio. This colder air will
interact with the precipitation max to likely result in a
rain/snow mix after midnight on Saturday. It is important to
note that during this transition, some model soundings, such as
the NAM, suggest the potential for a brief period of freezing
rain around midnight, especially across NW OH. Confidence in
this is low, so opted to not mention it in the forecast, but
will warrant further watching in the coming updates. Overall
impacts through Saturday night will remain minimal with little
to no accumulation of snow and rainfall totals of 0.25-0.5". The
highest rainfall totals will be across the eastern counties and
may result in additional flooding along rivers. Saturday night
lows will fall into the mid 30s.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
A slightly stronger storm system will be tracking through the Upper
Ohio Valley region on Sunday. Both the surface low and 850mb low
will be tracking northeastward near the Ohio River Sunday morning.
This storm track would be favorable for decent snowstorm for our
area if we had colder air for this system to work with. The setup
for this particular situation will be more marginal. There will be
limited cold air trying to work in on the northwest side of this
storm system on Sunday with 850mb temps just slightly below 0C.
Surface temperatures will generally be in the middle to upper 30s
while the moderate to heavier precip is falling on the northwest
side of this storm system. We are expecting a rain/snow mix changing
over to snow throughout the day Sunday. With temperatures staying
above freezing during the day, it will be hard to have much snowfall
accumulations. Snowfall rates will have to be high to get
accumulations on elevated objects and grassy surfaces.

As we head into Sunday night, we do finally see some colder air
moving in with 850mb temps falling to around -8C and surface temps
near or just slight below freezing. We expect some scattered light
lake effect snow showers to develop Sunday night into early Monday.
Some minor snowfall accumulations may be possible of trace to 1 inch
across much of northern Ohio and NWPA. 1 to 2 inches could be
possible in the favored snowbelt areas. Lake effect snow showers
will wrap up later on Monday and it will remain chilly in the 30s
for highs. Weak high pressure will move in Monday night with temps
in the upper 20s to lower 30s.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Another fast moving upper level trough will dig down through the
Great Lakes Region late Tuesday bringing another round of light
precipitation. Again temperatures both aloft and at the surface will
be marginal for wintry weather. We may start out with a little
rain/snow mix but change over to more light rain as this weather
system moves through Tuesday through Wednesday. Another upper level
trough may also swing through the Great Lakes region towards the end
of the week with another chance of light precipitation in the form of
light rain/snow. Temperatures will be near or slight above average
for much of next week.

.AVIATION /06Z Saturday THROUGH Wednesday/...
Widespread low clouds and associated IFR to LIFR ceilings are
expected through 06Z/Sun. Subtle disturbances embedded in W'erly
flow aloft impact our region through ~12Z/Sat. Thereafter, a
ridge aloft builds from the Lower OH Valley and vicinity through
00Z/Sun. At the surface, a weak ridge and associated light and
variable surface winds impact our region through 00Z/Sun as the
ridge builds from the north-central U.S. and eventually crests
over our region. Periods of very light drizzle are possible
through 00Z/Sun. In addition, widespread mist and fog with
visibility in the MVFR to LIFR range are expected through
~16Z/Sat. Thereafter, limited diurnal convective mixing of the
boundary layer should erode lingering mist and fog by the early
afternoon hours of Saturday.

Between 00Z and 06Z/Sun, the ridge at the surface and aloft
exits E'ward as a trough aloft approaches from the Upper/Mid MS
Valley and the attendant surface low deepens/moves NE'ward from
near central TN toward the Upper OH Valley. The interaction
between the departing ridge and deepening low will allow our
regional surface winds to become NE'erly around 5 to 15 knots.
Widespread light to moderate rain associated with the low
pressure system should overspread our region generally from
south to north between 00Z and 06Z/Sun. Visibility should be in
the VFR to MVFR range with this precip.

Outlook.. Periods of rain and/or snow showers with non-VFR are
forecast Sunday through Wednesday.

.MARINE...
The fog over the lake will continue through tonight into Saturday
morning. Fog visibilities will fluctuate around 1 nautical
mile. We have extended the fog headlines for much of Lake Erie
through 16z Saturday.

Winds will become from the west around 5-8 knots tonight before
becoming from the north and northeast at 5-10 knots by late
Saturday. North to northwest winds will increase to 15-25 knots
Saturday night into Sunday as a low pressure system tracks along the
Ohio River. This will build waves to 3 to 6 feet. Small Craft
headlines are likely needed at that time. North winds will gradually
decrease Sunday, becoming northwest at 5 to 10 knots Sunday night
and Monday. Southwest winds at 10 to 15 knots are expected by Monday
night and Tuesday.
