.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure exits tonight with brief high pressure building in
for Monday ahead of a deep and expansive low pressure system.
This system features changing precipitation types and gusty
winds through Wednesday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Looking at water vapor imagery makes it look as if the back edge
to any light precipitation is now located over NW OH. As this
feature moves eastward we expect to see the light precipitation
gradually end from west to east. Otherwise expect some light
snow/drizzle and maybe some patchy freezing drizzle as
temperatures dip below freezing.
Previous Discussion...
With the mid level trough beginning to move into the western
zones in the next couple of hours, POPs will wane west to east.
The surface/low level flows will align and come in out of the
northwest off the lake, and will transition the POPs to a lake
enhanced precipitation event. Not much instability in the low
levels, however, and the equilibrium level will be below 4kft,
so not expecting much in the way of snowfall accumulations.
Perhaps an inch or two in the favored areas of NE OH/NW PA.
Despite the lower QPF, POPs on the high side given the saturated
flow along with the modest cold air advection taking place.
Also noteworthy is the possibility of drizzle/freezing drizzle
with saturation mainly below the ice crystal growth layer.
Meanwhile, a well advertised low pressure system will eject our of
the southern plains region northeastward towards the Ohio Valley and
southern Great Lakes. The near term period just gets into the front
end of this event with the leading edge of the precipitation shield
beginning as a few hours of light snow before a transition to rain
with strong warm air advection. Southeast winds will be picking up
during this time as well as the low level flows increase and the
surface pressure gradient tightens.

.SHORT TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/...
Active weather is in store for the short term period, as a strong
low pressure system brings widespread rain and gusty winds across
the region. In this forecast update, a high wind watch has been
issued for Erie, PA to highlight the potential for strong southeast
wind gusts up to 60 mph on Tuesday, particularly in the afternoon
and evening hours.
The latest ensemble guidance continues to depict a strong low
pressure system on Tuesday, deepening to 980 mb as it moves
northeast across IN and MI through Tuesday night into Wednesday.
Isentropic ascent ahead of the system will allow light to moderate
precipitation to fall across the region early Tuesday morning.
Initially, some of this precipitation may fall as a wintry mix
and/or wet snow as lingering low-level cold air is slow to exit the
area. However, precipitation will quickly transition to all rain as
the low nears the Lower Great Lakes by mid-Tuesday. Rain will then
persist throughout the day as high temperatures reach near 50
degrees in the afternoon. Total rainfall amounts are expected to
range from 1 to 1.5 inches across the area which could lead to minor
river rises and/or nuisance flooding.
Another concern with this system continues to be the strong wind
potential on Tuesday across far NE OH and NW PA, and particularly
along the lakeshore areas where winds will be the highest. A strong
southeasterly LLJ is expected to develop in advance of this system,
characterized by 925 mb winds ranging between 50 and 60 knots. A
limiting factor for any higher wind gusts will be shallow mixing
heights <2kft as widespread rain is expected to coincide with the
strong LLJ. However, out of caution a high wind watch has been
issued for Erie, PA as BUFKIT profiles suggest 50-knot winds dipping
as low as 950 mb at times Tuesday afternoon and evening. Additional
Wind Advisories may be needed elsewhere across portions of NE OH and
NW PA.
For Wednesday, this strong low pressure system will begin to lift
northeastwards into Ontario and Quebec, bringing only a minimal
amount of cold air advection in its wake. The resultant trough on
the back side of the low will usher in gusty west to southwest winds
of 35 to 45 mph across much of the area on Wednesday. Wind
Advisories are possible if current trends persist. Wrap-around
moisture is also expected behind this system which will result in
scattered to widespread rain and/or snow, through Wednesday,
transitioning to lake-enhanced snow showers by Wednesday night. Not
anticipating much in the way of snow accumulation given the
marginally-cold air mass.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Active weather will continue across the long term period with the
potential for another strong system on the horizon towards the end
of the week and into the weekend.
An upper-trough will slide eastward across the Great Lakes on
Thursday with light precipitation in the form of rain and/or snow
possible. A stronger system is becoming more likely towards the end
of the week and into the weekend as a deep trough slides east across
the Central CONUS. Confidence is increasing on another deep low
pressure system to impact the Great Lakes with widespread
precipitation and wind, although confidence on exact track and
therefore precipitation type remains on the lower end.
Following this storm system, confidence is increasing on an extended
period of below-average temperatures as an arctic air mass lingering
across the northern Plains and Canada may begin to dip southward
towards much of the CONUS.

.AVIATION /06Z Monday THROUGH Friday/...
Even as high pressure builds into the region from the southwest,
trapped moisture across the area has low ceilings still in place
with some pockets of snow where there is some lake influence.
Ceilings will remain a variety of VFR and MVFR overnight with
this moisture in place. As high pressure builds in, ceilings
will lift to VFR levels across the board. High pressure will
shift east and winds will back around to the south and then
southeast through the period. The next system will begin to
enter late in the TAF period and have begun some snow mention at
KCLE.
Outlook...Widespread non-VFR and gusty winds expected in rain
and/or snow Tuesday into Wednesday. Additional non-VFR
conditions are possible in snow and low ceilings on Thursday and
Friday.

.MARINE...
A Gale Watch has been issued across the far east basin of Lake Erie
as strong southeast winds of 25 to 35 knots are expected to develop
on Tuesday as a strong low pressure system deepens towards the west.
In addition, a Small Craft Advisory remains in effect across
primarily the central basin of the lake for this evening and
overnight as west to northwest winds of 20 knots arrive.
Outside of the Gale Watch area on Tuesday, additional Small Craft
Advisories will likely be needed as a result from elevated southeast
winds of 20 to 30 knots. Behind the strong low pressure system,
winds will shift towards the west to southwest, 25 to 30 knots.
Additional Gales cannot be ruled out on Wednesday as winds have
trended upwards slightly. Regardless, Small Craft Advisories will be
needed outside of any potential Gales through Wednesday night and
perhaps even through Thursday as west to southwest winds remain
elevated.
Given strong southwest flow on Wednesday, we'll also need to monitor
the western basin for low water levels.
