.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure glides across the Lower Ohio Valley this evening,
followed by a cold front overnight tonight. High pressure builds
east into the region this weekend. Low pressure moves eastward
across Ontario and Quebec Saturday night into Sunday while
dragging a cold front across the Great Lakes region.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Main area of snow is ending from west to east. However as a
cold front moves southward some additional light snow is
possible. Any new accumulations away from the lake should be
under an inch. Still looks like some lake effect/lake
enhancement will impact NE OH into NW PA. More to come about
this overnight.

Previous Discussion...
Areas of light to moderate snow showers associated with low
pressure will gradually exit the extreme southern portions of
the forecast area through this evening. The parent low pressure
system will continue to glide east of the local area tonight as
high pressure ridging builds eastward from the central US. As
this system exits, northwesterly flow develops across Lake Erie
and is accompanied by a shortwave aloft. 850 mb temperatures
should remain cool enough, generally around -14C, through
Saturday to support lake effect snow across Northeast Ohio and
Northwest Pennsylvania. Currently have anywhere from 3 to 4
inches across portions of eastern Erie County, Pennsylvania
Saturday through Sunday morning. As the aforementioned ridge
continues to build into the region, winds over Lake Erie turn
southwesterly and will push any remaining LES north and east.

Overnight low temperatures below normal tonight and Saturday night
fall into the upper teens to lower 20s. High temperatures on
Saturday about 10 degrees below normal in the mid to upper 20s
areawide.

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
An amplified mid/upper pattern will remain in place Sunday as
broad ridging persists over western North America, with a large
downstream trough over eastern North America and corresponding
mid-level vortex centered east of James Bay. This will keep a
seasonably cold cyclonic flow in place across the Great Lakes,
but temperatures will average a solid 10-13 degrees warmer than
Saturday in response to some warm air advection ahead of a
potent northern stream shortwave diving through the central
Great Lakes. The associated sub 995 mb surface low will track
from north of Lake Huron Sunday morning into northern New
England Sunday night while gradually filling as the parent
mid/upper shortwave starts to deamplify. This will drag a
weakening cold front southeastward across the region early
Sunday night. In terms of impacts, there will be very little
moisture return for this system to tap into, and this along with
the best synoptic support staying to our north will keep most
of the area dry Sunday and Sunday night. The main area to watch
is far NE Ohio and NW PA, mainly along the lakeshore. A WSW
boundary layer flow (240- 250 degrees) will drive a lake-effect
snow band into western NY during the day Sunday, largely
impacting the Buffalo area. Lake induced instability is not very
impressive since 850 mb temps will be warming to -8 to -10 C,
but well-aligned flow, decent moisture, and Omega as the
shortwave passes to the north will keep the band going in at
least a loosely organized form, so have slight chance PoPs for a
few wet snow showers near the lakeshores of Ashtabula and
northern Erie Counties. As the cold front pushes south Sunday
evening into early Sunday night, the band will push inland
through the primary snowbelt of NE Ohio and NW PA but should be
breaking up rather quickly as much drier air and subsidence move
in. Expanded chance PoPs for this Sunday evening and Sunday
night, but accumulations will only be a trace to half inch at
most.

Strong surface high pressure will center over the Upper Ohio Valley
and eastern Great Lakes Monday and Monday night as the northern
stream mid/upper trough over the Great Lakes starts to lift out.
This will support dry conditions with quite a bit of sunshine, as
well as moderating temperatures.

Highs Sunday will range from the mid to upper 30s, warming into the
upper 30s to mid 40s Monday. Lows Sunday night will fall into the
low to mid 20s, with mid to upper 20s Monday night.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
A big warm up is still on track for mid to late next week as
quasi- zonal, split flow returns by Tuesday and persists into
Thursday. These height rises and Pacific-based air advecting
across the region combined with broad southerly flow as the
surface high moves off the east coast will lead to high
temperatures warming into the upper 40s/low 50s Tuesday and
low/mid 50s Wednesday. Rain chances will gradually increase late
Wednesday and Thursday as the northern stream starts to become
dominant again leading to a developing trough over the Great
Lakes Thursday, which will push a cold front across the region.
Stuck with blended PoPs and temperatures Wednesday night and
Thursday given some timing uncertainty, but the theme will be
periods of rain showers and temperatures gradually cooling
through the 40s Thursday. There is still a signal for the
mid/upper trough to deepen across the Great Lakes Friday into
next weekend which would pull a piece of arctic air into the
region. This could potentially support a strong surface low
tracking somewhere between the Mid Atlantic and Great Lakes, but
guidance has many inconsistencies as expected 7 days out. For
now, kept highs in the 30s Friday with chance PoPs for rain/snow
showers.

.AVIATION /06Z Saturday THROUGH Wednesday/...
A broad area of non-VFR conditions continue across the region as
a cold front exits and low ceilings and snow remain. Snow will
transition to a lake effect snow dominated processes and snow
will become focused to just NE OH and NW PA. In the meantime,
expect scattered snow showers across the entire area over the
next few hours before transitioning to lake effect. MVFR will be
favored ceiling-wise through Saturday and anything lower than
that will be because of visibility in snow. The surface ridge
will build in through the day and winds will back tonight to end
any lake effect in the airspace. Ceilings will scour out to
mostly clear. Winds will increase late in the TAF period and
gusts to 30 kt are possible.

Outlook...There is some low potential for non-VFR ceilings in NE
OH and NW PA Sunday.

.MARINE...
Another period of high winds and waves is likely on the lake this
weekend. First, a cold front will drop across the lake late tonight
and Saturday morning generating NW winds increasing to 15-25 knots
Saturday morning, lingering through the afternoon. This will
generate 3-6 foot waves in the central and eastern basins, so issued
a Small Craft Advisory beginning at 12Z Saturday. The western basin
will be close, but winds and waves should stay just below criteria.
Winds will veer to the SW Saturday evening and Saturday night and
increase to over 30 knots, with 35 knot gales over the central and
eastern basins by late Saturday night/early Sunday morning. This is
in response to a potent shortwave and associated surface low diving
through the central Great Lakes Sunday. Issued a Gale Watch for the
central and eastern basins beginning at 06Z Sunday through 00Z
Monday, although winds will probably start to subside Sunday
afternoon. The western basin will need a high end Small Craft
Advisory Saturday evening through Sunday, but held off for now given
it being in the 3rd period for headlines. Winds will veer to the NW
and decrease quickly Sunday night behind the cold front as high
pressure builds across the Great Lakes.

Much quieter conditions are expected on the lake early to mid next
week with generally light and variable winds Monday turning light S
to SE Tuesday and Wednesday as high pressure gradually slides to the
east coast.
