.SYNOPSIS...
Weak low pressure system will swing east across the lower Great
Lakes region today. A stronger storm system moves northeastward
from the lower Great Plains on Friday. This system will rapidly
deepen as it moves over the Great Lakes region through the
weekend.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH FRIDAY/...
1230 PM...A Wind Advisory has been issued for the entire area
for Friday evening through Saturday. In addition, a High Wind
Warning has been issued for Erie, PA for the same time period.
More details will follow in the main package update later this
afternoon.
Otherwise, only a few scattered rain and/or rain showers remain
across NW PA early this afternoon with a lull expected over the
next few hours before the next round of lake- enhanced rain
and/or snow showers impacts portions of far NE OH and NW PA.
Previous discussion...
Low to mid level ridging will erode early this morning as a weak
surface low and accompanying upper trough swing through the lower
Great Lakes. A brief burst of snowfall will continue to move across
the northern half of the forecast area (mainly north of US-30) this
morning. Overall snowfall accumulations with this weak system will
be less than 1 inch for most of the area. Lingering snow across the
snowbelt may lead to 1 to 2 inches of snow accumulation in the
higher elevation locations of Northwest Pennsylvania. Another brief
low/mid level ridge of high pressure will build northwestward into
the area this afternoon and evening. Precipitation chances will
gradually diminish from west to east as this ridge builds overhead.
Our next strong storm system enters the region from the southwest
Friday morning and will usher in another period of widespread
rainfall and strong winds to round out the near term period. While
the center of the low will be located over the lower/middle
Mississippi Valley Friday morning, isentropic ascent on the front
side of the low will allow for rain showers to move into the region
through the day Friday. Additionally, southeasterly winds ahead of
the surface low will rapidly increase during the day Friday as the
surface low deepens and moves into the lower Great Lakes region. A
strong LLJ between 50-60 knots at 925mb moves overhead by Friday
afternoon and will support surface wind speeds 25-30 MPH with gusts
up to 40+ MPH. We will likely need wind headlines for most if
not all of our forecast area Friday afternoon into the short
term forecast period as the low moves overhead. More on
potential headlines and impacts from this system through the
weekend can be found below in the short term discussion.
Near normal high temperatures today in the mid 30s with overnight
lows hovering around 30 degrees. Southerly flow and warm air
advection ahead of the low will allow for highs on Friday to rise to
the low to mid 40s.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
We begin the short term period with a very strong upper-level closed
low (~515 dam at 500mb) centered over lower Michigan and
encompassing the entirety of the Great Lakes region. Model guidance
starting to converge on a low track, with the low moving from north-
central Indiana on 00Z/Sat northeastward to western Lake Huron by
12Z/Sat, holding firm at a 972-975 mb. Most of the QPF with this
system is expected before 00Z, though rain showers should linger
early Friday night with a dry slot possibly working in from the
southwest. Colder temperatures advect in from the west, with renewed
moisture wrapping around the low also coming in from the west as the
low pulls away to the north Friday night. This will result in a
quick transition to snow showers from west to east, starting after
06Z, with the entire area transitioned to all snow by 11Z/Sat, with
snow showers sticking around through much of the day Saturday. Lake
enhancement is likely to begin right away Saturday morning as
temperatures aloft rapidly cool with strong cold air advection.
System snow amounts should be around an inch or less areawide,
though will be a little bit more impactful than normal due to very
strong winds reducing visibilities and blowing snow around (more
specifics on the wind in separate paragraph below). Lake enhancement
will lead to slightly higher numbers downwind of Lake Erie.
Strong southeast winds are expected to begin Friday evening lasting
through early Friday night. There's some uncertainty with exact
strength of the winds within the warm air advection regime, though
there's a good chance for 40 mph wind gusts areawide and even higher
with downsloping in Northwest Pennsylvania with downsloping (as high
as 60 mph possible again there). With cold air advection late Friday
night and Saturday, southwest and west wind gusts of up to 50 mph
are expected areawide, with stronger gusts possible near the
lakeshore, especially Lorain and points east where the wind is
expected to be nearly parallel to the shoreline. Wind Advisories are
very likely at some point areawide, with some more targeted high
wind watch/warnings possible, especially near the lakeshore.
We should transition to mostly lake effect snow by Saturday night
but temperatures aloft continuing to cool, and inversion heights
deepening over lake effect, with moderate lake-induced instability
developing Saturday night and maintaining through Sunday and Sunday
night. Accumulating lake effect snow is possible for the primary
snowbelt of Northeast Ohio and Northwest Pennsylvania Saturday night
through Sunday. Latest model guidance has been trending a little
more more south with the steering-flow wind, with west-southwest
flow (around 250) now targeting eastern Lake, northern Ashtabula,
and especially Erie PA for snowfall amounts, with several inches of
snow expected through Saturday night. While ECWMF/GFS main some west-
southwest flow on Sunday and Sunday night, the CMC/NAM (CMC
typically better for location of lake effect in these situations)
develops more southwest flow, pushing snow bands offshore and into
the state of New York for Sunday and Sunday night. Any snow that
does fall will be especially impactful though, with gusts of up to
40 mph Saturday night (possibly higher, up to 50 mph, near the
lakeshore) producing low visibility in falling snow and blowing snow.
Temperatures will be quite cold Sunday and Sunday night with
temperature at or below 20 degrees most of the day and then dipping
down to around 10 or lower Sunday night. Below zero wind chills will
be possible.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Cold temperatures continue through the long term with low temps in
the single digits and below zero wind chills Monday night and
Tuesday night. Lake effect snow remains possible in the primary snow
belt through the long term period, mainly Tuesday before high
pressure builds in to the south on Wednesday.

.AVIATION /18Z Thursday THROUGH Tuesday/...
MVFR ceilings will continue across the TAF sites through this
evening, with improvement to VFR areawide expected late tonight
into early Friday morning. Included vcsh and MVFR rain mention
across the western TAF sites towards the end of the TAF period
as rain begins to arrive. At the longer CLE TAF site, did
include IFR rain from 21Z onwards on Friday.
Winds are elevated and generally out of the southwest early this
afternoon, 10 to 15 knots with gusts of 20 to 25 knots. Winds
will diminish to less than 10 knots this evening, becoming
southeast into early Friday morning. Winds will increase out of
the southeast, 10 to 15 knots with gusts of 20 to 25 knots
possible by late Friday morning and early afternoon. Did not
include any LLWS in this update given the elevated surface
winds, but may need to be considered in future updates as 2000
ft winds may exceed 50 knots.
Outlook... Non-VFR with strong winds expected Friday through
Saturday as another strong low pressure system moves into the
region. Lake effect snow showers may bring non-VFR conditions
across the Snowbelt Saturday night into Sunday.

.MARINE...
Winds out of the southwest strengthen to around 20 knots today
before dissipating to 15 knots or less tonight as high pressure
briefly builds in. A small craft advisory is in effect for all of
Lake Erie for these winds.
A strong low moves northeast across the Great Lakes region Friday
and Saturday, with a complex wind forecast expected. Winds will
initially be out of the east at 20-25 knots Friday afternoon,
becoming southeast and then south Friday night, strengthening to
around 30-35 knots. As the low pulls away from the area late Friday
night and Saturday, southwest and west gales up to 45 knots are
expected before winds gradually dissipate Saturday night and Sunday.
A gale watch has been issued for the entire lake for these very
strong winds. There is some potential for near storm-force west
winds Saturday morning and early Saturday afternoon. The strong west
winds will also result in very low water in the western basin and a
low water advisory will likely be needed at some point.
West and southwest winds taper off Sunday, with speeds down to less
than 20 knots by Monday night.
