.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure over the Ohio Valley will track northeast across Lake
Ontario overnight, pulling a strong cold front east across the area.
A secondary arctic front will move east across the area on Wedneday
night. High pressure will build into the Ohio Valley on Thursday
then expand across the eastern Great Lakes on Friday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
12:30 AM Update...
The main challenge the next few hours continues to be fog. Erie
and Meadville, PA are still reporting 1/2 to 1/4 mile
visibilities, and this is likely to be problematic much of the
night until the cold front crosses far NE Ohio and NW PA in the
10-12Z timeframe. Will keep the Dense Fog Advisory through 12Z
for Ashtabula, Erie, and Crawford Counties, but will monitor
observations throughout the night.

930 PM EST Update...
Showers have largely exited the area, but a few light showers
may persist across NW PA through the overnight. Otherwise,
generally expect dry weather in most locations tonight before a
line of rain/snow showers move into the area with the cold front after
about 09Z/4 AM. Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect for
Ashtabula and Erie/Crawford (PA) counties until Midnight.
However, latest forecast soundings and gridded visibility
guidance suggests that dense fog may persist through the
overnight in this area so an extension may be needed.

No changes have been made to the lake effect snow headlines and
will continue to assess the snowfall forecast for far NE OH
(specifically northern Ashtabula County) as more 00Z guidance
trickles in tonight.

Previous Discussion...
Warm and moist conditions are in place to start the near term
as low pressure tracks northeast from the Ohio Valley across the
eastern Great Lakes tonight. Temperatures are near 50 degrees
this afternoon towards Toledo and in the southeast towards Akron
and Youngstown. Rain continues to stream north across the area
as isentropic ascent continues but will decrease by midnight as
a cold front and mid- level dry slot wrap into the system.
Before this occurs, we are seeing reduced visibilites across
the central and eastern portions of the area along with locally
dense fog near the lakeshore. In addition a Dense Fog Advisory
has been issued for Ashtabula, Erie, and Crawford Counties where
the cold ground may enhance the fog until midnight. Later
tonight the increasing westerly flow is likely to help
visibilities improve. Temperatures will fall into the 30s by
morning.

On Wednesday, another wave of low pressure develops just east of the
Appalachians ahead of a deep upper level trough curling north
from the Gulf Coast. Precipitation develops across the eastern
half of the area as surface low pressure tracks north into
Pennsylvania while the trough becoming negatively tilted aloft.
This places the area under favorable upper divergence in the
entrance region of 170 knot jet aloft. Eastern areas may see
precipitation start as rain before transitioning to snow as it
takes some time for the wet bulb to come down. In general the
trend has been towards slightly cooler temperatures through the
day on Wednesday as cold advection continues. Accumulations are
expected to be an inch or less through the daytime hours with a
moist ground. As the sun sets we expect to see accumulations
increase in Northwest Pennsylvania before the transition to lake
effect snow occurs.

Lake effect snows will develop as the airmass cools on Wednesday
evening with a prevailing westerly flow in the 925-700mb layer,
over 500 J/kg of laked induced CAPE, and equilibrium levels in
the 12-14K range. Snow is forecast to primarily be focused
across the northern half of Erie County Pennsylvania to start
the event where rates in excess of 1 inch per hour are
possible. This is not expected to be as long of a duration event
as events over the last couple weeks have been as the flow
becomes more southwesterly across Lake Erie by Thursday morning.
However, it does seem the window is present beginning at 4 PM
and continuing for at least 12 hours where heavy snows are
possible. For this reason, Erie County Pennsylvania has been
upgraded to a Lake Effect Snow Warning. Some uncertainty remains
in the placement of the bands and if Ashtabula will need a
warning or if an Advisory might be better suited. See the short
term discussion for more information on the Thursday forecast.

Elsewhere an arctic cold front wraps west to east across the area
during the 00Z-06Z time frame. Increased pops on Wednesday evening
with some snow squalls and reduced visibilities along this boundary
with westerly winds gusting between 30-40 mph. Accumulations will be
limited to an inch or less but could create a quick coating and
slick conditions in some locations.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
Lake effect snow will be ongoing across NW PA and far NE OH
throughout Thursday. Models have shown good convergence across the
eastern shoreline of Lake Erie and developing a lake aggregate
trough. A discrepancy among the models are where the convergence will
be at along the shoreline. The GFS has it further inland, whereas
the Canadian models have it just off shore. There will still be very
cold air at 850 mb with temperatures of -16 to -18 C over the lake,
which is still fairly warm at 4 to 5 C leading to good lake induced
instability. Mid-level RH starts to lack as well through Thursday as
much drier air starts to move in from the southwest. Another factor
in where the snow will fall is the wind direction. At this point in
the forecast, the winds have started to back to the west-southwest,
so the main flow and snowbands will be located just off-shore of the
OH shoreline and clipping the northeastern shorline of Erie Co.,
PA. So we've continued the trend of sliming down the southern
extent of the snow band and lower totals a touch with the coast
of Erie Co. seeing 3-5 inches and the inland portion seeing 1-3
inches from 12Z Thursday onward. By Thursday night into Friday
morning, the flow will start to shift to more westerly for a
short period of time as high pressure builds in the Tennessee
Valley. Once the high builds more to the northeast on Friday,
the 925 mb ridge axis will shift with it and flow will shift to
the southwest and cut off the lake effect. Winds will be strong
Thursday morning with 15-20 mph sustained and gusting upwards of
30-35 mph, and stronger closer to Lake Erie. Winds chills will
be in the single digits and approaching zero for everyone across
the region with those in the western half of the CWA being
below zero. Winds will subside slowly throughout the day on
Thursday and becoming calm on Friday.

Friday as the high pressure builds in, flow will become southerly
and drier. Temperatures will start to warm back to normal to start
the weekend.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
An upper level trough will start to deepen over the Great Plains on
Saturday supporting a surface low pressure system across the Mid-
Mississippi Valley. This system, along with the southerly flow
bringing moisture northward, will lead to rain chances increasing on
throughout the day Saturday. Models have trended slower in bringing
the moisture northward and the system as a whole, so opted to slow
the precipitation down from the previous forecast. With the slower
trend, PoPs will linger longer on Sunday. After the low weakens, and
the trough pushes off to the northeast, a ridge will build into the
region to start the week. There will be another chance for
precipitation Monday into Tuesday as a cold front moves through the
region. Temperatures will be around normal through the weekend and
to start the week with highs in the mid 40s and lows in the low
30s.

.AVIATION /06Z Wednesday THROUGH Sunday/...
Relatively poor flight conditions will continue through this
morning with widespread MVFR to IFR conditions, including in and
out fog in NE Ohio and NW PA. The fog is mainly affecting KERI,
but kept MVFR visibilities at KYNG and KCAK at times. A cold
front will sweep across the region in the 08-12Z timeframe this
morning, and that will bring a band of rain showers changing to
snow showers from west to east, with additional MVFR to IFR cigs
and vis. Behind the cold front, drier air will gradually improve
cigs to MVFR later this morning through the afternoon, with
even VFR at KTOL and KFDY by tonight. However, MVFR will persist
farther east as lingering scattered snow showers transitions to
lake-effect snow by this evening. The lake-effect snow will
mainly affect KERI this evening through tonight, but kept
PROB30s through early tonight at KCLE for occasional snow
showers to clip the terminal. The snow could be heavy at times
at KERI through early tonight before the band starts to lift
northward, and this will bring very poor visibility.

Winds will turn WNW this morning at 5-10 knots before increasing
to 15-25 knots with occasional gusts of 25-30 knots this
afternoon and evening. The strongest gusts will be near the
lakeshore. Winds will gradually subside tonight while backing to
SW.

Outlook...Non-VFR expected in periodic lake effect snow at ERI
through Thursday and possibly into Friday. Additional non-VFR
possible in rain showers Saturday night into Sunday.

will be light and variable across Lake Erie. On Wednesday, a second
low pressure system will develop with a passing cold front that will
start to increase westerly flow in the morning, with winds reaching
25-30 kts by Wednesday evening. By early Thursday morning, winds
will reach Gales for the central and eastern basins of Lake Erie.
Currently a Gale Watch is in effect from 03Z to 21Z Thursday. There
will be strong cold air advection with the winds, and will present
low water issues west of the Islands for a short period of time
starting Wednesday night through Thursday morning. High pressure
will start to build into the region on Thursday and winds will
subside from west to east across the lake. Predominant flow will
shift out of the south starting on Friday with winds 10-15 kts and
continue through the weekend.
