.SYNOPSIS...
A storm system will bring impacts to the region tonight through
Saturday night. High pressure returns early next week.
&&
.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM SATURDAY MORNING/...
At 720 PM: KCLX detected an area of light rainfall/drizzle
pushing onshore across southern Charleston County. This activity
is not likely to produce measurable rainfall this evening.
However, the forecast will feature an increase to SCHC PoPs
through mid-evening. Otherwise, rainfall is expected to arrive
over inland Georgia later this evening as a warm front
approaches from the south. The updated forecast will feature
adjustments to the rainfall timing, increase cloud cover, and
align hourly temperatures to observation trends.
Tonight: A busy 24 hour period begins. Aforementioned southern
stream short-wave trough and associated upper jet axis will be
pressing into the southeast CONUS with the surface low working
across Georgia. Strong larger scale forcing for ascent ahead of
the trough in concert with increasing warm/moist advection with
a sharpening warm front will be spreading widespread rainfall
through the Deep South and into a good portion of southeast
Georgia and South Carolina...primarily during the overnight
hours. It does appear that the highest PoPs (>80 percent) and
rainfall amounts through sunrise Saturday morning will occur
roughly north of a line from Millen GA to the Charleston area.
Lower pops and rainfall amounts further south through McIntosh
County.
Instability through the overnight hours will be unimpressive...
largely a few hundred J/Kg or less MUCAPE. But with the strong
synoptic scale forcing for ascent spreading into the region,
might be enough for embedded isolated thunderstorms to develop
within the larger scale area of precip lifting into the region.
And given the strong kinematics/shear profiles, an isolated
strong/severe storm cannot be ruled out, although the better
probabilities for severe storms will come Saturday afternoon.
In addition, convective rains could support a broad swath of
1-1.5" rain through sunrise largely across the northern third of
the CWA posing a risk for minor flooding, especially considering
recent rainfall and likely saturated ground. With tide levels
expected to breach minor flood stage in the Charleston Harbor
just before 7 AM, an elevated flood threat could develop over
Downtown Charleston if heavy rains coincide with this tide. This
will have to be watched carefully.
Lows tonight will occur early with temperatures expected to
slowly rise overnight with the passage of the warm front. Lows
will bottom out in the upper 50s/lower 60s with temperatures
rising into the mid-upper 60s by daybreak.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM SATURDAY MORNING THROUGH MONDAY/...
The most active weather over the next several days will be on
Saturday. A mid level trough will progress towards the East coast
through the day. At the surface, an associated low pressure system
will track across the region, with a warm front lifting north of the
area in the morning followed by a cold front passing through later
in the day/Saturday evening.
While there is expected to be some rain and perhaps a few
thunderstorms around in the morning, there could be somewhat of a
brief lull in precipitation before additional activity moves in
ahead of the front in the early afternoon and evening. PWats are
expected to surge well above climatology, peaking upwards of 1.7
inches. Additional rainfall amounts during the day Saturday are
forecast to average in the 0.50-1 inch range. Pockets of heavier
rainfall will certainly be possible and could cause some ponding on
roadways and in low-lying areas given the already saturated grounds
however current thinking though is that storms will be moving enough
to prevent a more widespread flooding threat during this timeframe.
Attention then turns to the severe weather threat. Instability progs
reach the 1000-1500 J/kg range, and there will certainly be
sufficient shear available to promote storm organization with 0-6 km
increasing to over 60 kt. Damaging wind gusts and isolated tornadoes
(with low level SRH of ~200 m2/s2) would be the primary threats,
though marginally severe hail up to an inch can't be ruled out. SPC
maintains the entire area in a Slight Risk for severe weather.
Precip will exit/diminish rapidly Saturday night with frontal
passage and the arrival of much drier air.
High pressure will build in early next week, becoming centered over
the Southeast by later Monday. Gusty winds could linger on Sunday as
result of the tight pressure gradient positioned over the area, but
otherwise quiet weather is expected with a dry forecast in place.
Temperatures will be cooler, especially overnight when far inland
areas drop to the mid to upper 30s. The airmass should be too dry
and there should be enough wind Sunday night/Monday morning to
prevent frost formation, but will need to keep an eye on Monday
night/Tuesday morning. Current forecast lows would largely keep
frost at bay.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Surface high pressure will maintain control of the local weather
through the middle of next week. No notable features to support
rainfall, so a dry forecast persists. Temperatures will be on a
warming trend through the period.

.AVIATION /00Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
0Z TAFs: A sfc low is forecast to track NE from the MS/AL line
this evening to eastern NC by Saturday afternoon. The warm front
associated with the low is timed to push north of the terminals
between 6-12Z tonight. The passage of the warm front should
result in MVFR ceilings and winds to shift from the southeast,
with gusts around 20 kts. LLWS appears possible at each terminal
between 8-12Z. In addition, a band of moderate to heavy showers
with embedded thunderstorms should arrive over the region late
tonight, then drifting over the terminals before daybreak
Saturday. The strongest convection is expected around mid-day as
a cold front approaches from the west. This period was
highlighted with TEMPOs from 14-18Z for TSRA. Rounds of showers
and MVFR ceilings should linger across the terminals until the
cold front pushes over the Atlantic early Saturday evening.
Extended Aviation Outlook: A storm system will bring flight
restrictions due to showers/thunderstorms, along with gusty winds,
into Saturday night. VFR returns on Sunday and prevails afterwards.

.MARINE...
Sneaky northeast gusty conditions this afternoon has prompted
the addition of Charleston Harbor and all South Carolina
nearshore zones into the SCA. Winds may tend to diminish a bit
as we go through the night while veering around to the south by
Saturday morning. Seas will remain 4-6 ft over the South
Santee-Edisto Beach waters and build to 5-7 ft over the Georgia
offshore legs.
Saturday through Wednesday: Elevated seas and gusty southerly winds
ahead of an approaching cold front on Saturday will support a Small
Craft Advisory across all SC waters, including the Charleston
Harbor, and the outer Georgia waters. Conditions across the
nearshore Georgia waters look to stay just shy of criteria. The
front will cross the waters Saturday night with winds staying
elevated into Sunday night. Current end times of the advisories may
need further adjustments or re-issuance if conditions fall
below for a long enough period. Improvement is expected for the
early to middle of next week as high pressure shifts overhead
and eventually into the Atlantic.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
Perigean Spring Tides will occur this weekend. Model guidance has
been consistently indicating that the Saturday morning high tide
(occurring ~7 AM) could bring minor coastal flooding, mainly for the
coasts of Charleston and Colleton Counties. A Coastal Flood Advisory
could be needed. There is potential for moderate to heavy rain
around the time of high tide which could result in an enhanced risk
for flooding.
