.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
127 AM Update: Isolated snow shower bands that originated off
the St. Lawrence river continue to fizzle out through the
overnight hours, though current IR satellite imagery indicates
that a few cloud lines continue to stream off the St. Lawrence,
and there is a very small chance (10%) of flurries lingering
under this cloud cover. As the high pressure continues to
establish in the area, cloud cover will continue to decrease
through the night. The previous forecast remains on track with
only minor adjustments based on observations and trends.
Previous discussion:
A Wind Chill Advisory has been issued for portions of northern
and northwestern Maine tonight into Friday morning. High
pressure builds east toward the region tonight, while strong low
pressure remains across northern Quebec province. An upper
level disturbance also crosses the region early tonight. The
upper disturbance is also helping support isolated/scattered
snow showers across mostly northern and central portions of the
forecast area. However, a very narrow more organized band of
snow showers has developed across the Saint John Valley.
Isolated snow showers will persist early tonight then diminish
overnight. Generally expect little or no snow accumulation with
these snow showers. However, localized light accumulations are
possible across portions of the Saint John Valley if the
organized band of snow showers remains more persistent.
West/northwest winds will remain gusty tonight, though gusts
will gradually decrease overnight. Wind chill values will fall
below zero across the entire region tonight. The coldest wind
chills of 20 to 25 below zero will occur across northern and
northwest areas where the Wind Chill Advisory has been issued.
High pressure builds across the region Friday. Expect a mostly
sunny morning, with a mostly/partly sunny afternoon. Winds will
gradually diminish through Friday. Low temperatures tonight will
range from around zero to 5 below north, to the single digits
above zero Downeast. High temperatures Friday will range from
the lower 20s north, to around 30 to the lower 30s Downeast.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
High pressure will be centered south of Nova Scotia Friday
night bringing a mild return southwesterly flow across our
region. The return flow will work with upper level ridging to
lift mild air north across our area resulting in lows only in
the mid 30s across the region. Long wave northern branch ridging
will continue to span the eastern half of the country on
Saturday. Meanwhile, a weak southern branch shortwave will slide
off the Mid-Atlantic coast around Cape Hatteras on Saturday
developing surface low pressure off the Mid-Atlantic coast.
Moisture lifting north of this low will bring increasing clouds
Saturday with a chance for some light rain or showers over
southern areas by the end of the day and into Saturday night.
Any showers will likely diminish late Saturday night as the
northern branch upper ridging strengthens and begins to collapse
the southern branch low, which by Sunday morning will be south
of Cape Cod.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Some very unseasonably warm weather is on the way as we go into
the first week of March, thanks to a strong upper level ridge
building into the east. Temperatures through early next week may
end up averaging around 20 degrees above normal.
The small area of low pressure south of the region will continue to
weaken and dissipate on Sunday as upper level ridging continues to
strengthen over the area. This will bring a partly sunny and
unseasonably warm day on Sunday with highs around 50 across inland
locations. Strong upper ridging will remain over the area Monday
bringing another partly sunny and very warm day with highs again
near 50 across inland areas. The upper ridging will continue to be
over the area Tuesday. However, a weak low circulating under the
upper ridge may begin to work its way north up from the southeast
coast around a large quasi-subtropical surface high well to our
east. There remains considerable model differences in how far north
this moisture comes with the ECMWF lifting the moisture north but
the GFS keeping the moisture and low well to our south. The strong
upper ridging gives plenty of confidence that it will be another
unseasonably warm day. But how much cloudiness and how much
precipitation remains a bit uncertain. A cold front will begin to
push into the region on Wednesday channeling some subtropical
moisture north along the east coast. Wednesday will continue to be a
warm day ahead of the front with increasing clouds and a chance of
showers, mainly during the afternoon. By Thursday, an unseasonable
looking subtropical high will be positioned well to our east with
subtropical moisture streaming up the east coast into a weak low
along the Mid-Atlantic coast. This has a chance of bringing some
showers into the area with the best chance of showers over southern
parts of the area. Thursday would be a bit cooler as the frontal
boundary pushes into our area, but still likely well above normal
with highs in the low to mid 40s across the region.

NEAR TERM: Generally VFR conditions are expected across the
region through Friday. However, brief MVFR remains possible at
Aroostook terminals through the early morning hours in isolated
snow showers. West 10 to 15 kts with gusts 20 to 25 kts
overnight. Winds shift at 10 to 15 kts Friday, gusting 20 to 25
kts.
SHORT TERM:
Friday night...MVFR to VFR north. VFR south. Light S wind.
Saturday...VFR, possibly lowering to MVFR south. Light SW wind.
Saturday night...MVFR south. MVFR to VFR north. Light SW wind.

Saturday for seas up to 5 ft and wind gusting up to 25 kt. Winds
should drop below SCA Saturday night through early next week.
However, seas may be up to 5 to 6 ft Sunday night into Monday in
response to a long southerly fetch off the East Coast.
