.SYNOPSIS...
A wealth of clouds will be in place today ahead of a developing storm
system...although it should be relatively rain free through at least
early afternoon. A complex frontal system will then push northeast
across the region late today and tonight...and this will result in a
much needed soaking rain. While the rain will taper off for parts of
the region late tonight...a very large storm system will rotate mixed
rain and wet snow over our region for much of Thursday into the start
of the weekend.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH THURSDAY/...
An anomalously deep...vertically stacked storm system over the Upper
Mississippi valley this morning will dig to the southeast across the
Upper Great Lakes this afternoon...while the wedge of high pressure
that has provided much of the region with dry weather of late will exit
across New England. While this will eventually lead to widespread pcpn
for our forecast area...we should stay rain free through at least early
afternoon. Unfortunately...plentiful low level moisture trapped beneath
a weakening subsidence inversion will keep us shrouded today...
particularly over the western counties.

This afternoon...a triple point that will develop within an area of
strong cyclogenesis ahead of the aforementioned storm system will cross
western Lake Erie to southernmost Ontario. As we push through the late
afternoon into the early evening...this will evolve into a rapidly
deepening sfc low in the vcnty of Lake Huron. A strong occlusion
extending to the south of this strengthening sub 995mb low will then
plow across our forecast area through the night. Deep frontogenetic
forcing along and immediately to the rear of this 'boundary' will
generate a solid 60 mile wide swath of moderately heavy rain in the
process...with most of western New York picking up basin average
rainfall amounts of around a half inch.

The steady rain will focus on the western counties during the first
half of the night...then just about the time a short lived dry slot
works in behind it to shut down the synoptic activity...the area of
rain will overspread the Eastern Lake Ontario region. Its certainly
worth noting that H85 temperatures will quickly tumble to arnd -4c in
the wake of the occlusion...so there is likely to be a relatively brief
period of wet snow before the pcpn ends. This will especially be the
case across the Srn Tier where minor accumulations will be possible on
elevated sfc's.

While the steady pcpn will taper off across the western counties late
tonight...strong cold advection at that time will support instability
over a relatively mild Lake Erie that will lead to lake effect rain and
wet snow showers. Initially...the cellular lake effect showers will be
focused on parts of the Srn Tier...but as we head towards daybreak...
backing winds will push the activity northward. In fact...the bulk of
the lake effect mixed rain and wet snow showers will be north of
downtown Buffalo by daybreak.

The only other thing of note is that there will be a 40-45kt low level
jet in the cold advection behind the occlusion that will produce gusty
sfc winds...particularly along the Lake Erie shore and across the
higher terrain of the Srn Tier where gusts could reach 40 mph.

The very large stacked low will then drift from Lower Michigan to the
Upper Ohio valley during the day Thursday...while a secondary area of
low pressure will pinwheel northwards along the New Jersey coast. It
will be this second storm system that will circulate abundant Atlantic
moisture back across our forecast area to maintain very unsettled wet
weather. Synoptic rains over the Eastern Lake Ontario region will push
back to the west during the course of the day...expanding across most
of the region by late afternoon. Rainfall amounts on Thursday are
forecast to range from a tenth or so over the far western counties to
around three quarters of an inch over parts of the Eastern lake Ontario
region.

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
A deep, complex low pressure system will remain stalled out over
southern New England through much of this period. A secondary wave
of low pressure coming off the spine of the Appalachians Thursday
night will round the base of the parent broad longwave trough across
the eastern CONUS, causing the center of the low to retrograde
westward a bit through Friday. This system will effectively
circulate deeper Atlantic-based moisture back around to the eastern
Great Lakes within a cool, cyclonic NW flow. The result will be a
wet stretch of weather, particularly in the favored lake
enhanced/upslope areas east and southeast of the lakes.
Precipitation type itself remains a bit of a challenge as 850H temps
will range from about -2C to -4C, initially coldest across the
Southern Tier early Thursday night and warming a degree or so
through the night. With dynamic cooling in mind this should favor
wet, heavy snow across the higher elevations of the Southern Tier
while the lower elevations will greatly struggle to see any flakes,
instead remaining mostly plain rain. Any frozen precip should
gradually transition to rain or a rain/snow mix through the day
Friday as sfc temps warm, though it will still be a rather chilly
day with highs not escaping the upper 30s across the hilltops.

The closed low pressure system will begin finally pivoting away from
the coast late Friday night. An intrusion of mid level dry air will
begin to encroach into the forecast area from the east as it does
so, which should allow the steadier precipitation to taper off
across the eastern zones. PoPs will remain higher across western NY
as deeper moisture will continue to flow across Lake Erie and the
western end of Lake Ontario. A partial changeover back to wet snow
across the interior hilltops (especially the Tug/Western Dacks) not
completely out of the question, but temp profiles appear far more
marginal in supporting frozen precip and therefore mostly rain is
expected.

In regards to potential accumulations this period...About 1-3" of
wet snow is expected across the hilltops of the Southern Tier
Thursday night into Friday morning, though the higher elevations of
Allegany County could be closer to the 3-5" range. It is worth
noting that ensemble probabilistic spread in this particular area is
higher than surrounding locales, with 75th-25th percentile
differences of nearly 4". Given the more easterly flow and low level
WAA across the North Country, not expecting much of a changeover to
snow across the Tug/Western Dacks Thursday night, though there could
be minor accumulations under half an inch Friday night.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
The large upper level low pressure system will move from the Long
Island coast Saturday northeastward to the east of Maine by Sunday
morning. This combined with a brief, reinforcing shot of slightly
colder air descending from Canada will cause precipitation to
transition to mostly lake enhanced and upslope showers east/
southeast of the lakes. Activity will wind down Saturday night
as a much drier airmass finally pushes in from the west and only
continue to wane through the remainder of the weekend, however
still expect at least scattered showers to continue across areas
downwind of the Lakes and upslope areas. As for p-type, expect
mainly rain during the day, with wet snow possibly continuing to
mix in across the higher terrain during the overnights through
mid morning. Any snow accumulations are expected to minor.

Medium range guidance then diverges some for the start of next week.
General consensus at this point tries to bring weak high pressure
across the area to start the new work week, followed by the next
system potentially impacting our area by Tuesday. Temps will modify
some for the start of next week, so expect any precipitation to be
mainly in the liquid form. However as mentioned, timing and strength
of both of these features remains somewhat in question this far out.

.AVIATION /09Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
A wealth of low level moisture trapped beneath a pronounced
subsidence inversion will maintain cigs of 700-1550 feet across the
western counties for the remainder of the pre dawn hours. Cigs for the
higher situated airfields across the western Southern Tier will
experience VLIFR conditions. Meanwhile...a somewhat drier airmass east
of Lake Ontario will allow for continued VFR weather for sites such as
KART and KGTB.

Little will change across the region as we push through today with TAF
sites over the western counties experiencing IFR to MVFR cigs. There
will be a nominal improvement during the midday and early
afternoon...but as a complex frontal system advances across central
Lake Erie and northwest Pennsylvania late in the day...a swath of
steady moderately heavy rain will start to make its way across the
region.

MVFR to IFR conditions will persist tonight...as the aforementioned
frontal system will push across the region. Moderately heavy rain will
accompany this systems passing...and there is even the likelihood for a
period of wet snow across the western Southern Tier on the backedge of
the pcpn during the wee hours of Thursday morning.

Outlook...

Thursday...MVFR/IFR with rain showers...possibly mixed with snow
early across the higher terrain.
Friday and Saturday...MVFR/IFR with rain and snow showers.
Sunday...VFR/MVFR with rain showers possible east of Lakes Erie and
Ontario.

.MARINE...
There will be quite a dichotomy between the two lakes today...as
moderate to occasionally fresh easterlies will remain intact over Lake
Ontario...while gentle southerlies will be dominant on Lake Erie.

A large storm system over the Upper Great Lakes tonight will push a
complex frontal system to the northeast across the region through
Thursday morning. This will not only generate several hours of
moderately heavy rain...but will result in winds that will
significantly strengthen while becoming southwesterly. In fact...a
short period of gale force wind gusts will be found over the NY
nearshore waters of Lake Erie during the first half of tonight. A gale
warning for this area has thus been issued.

Meanwhile...winds will veer to the southwest on Lake Ontario in the
wake of the front during the course of tonight. In response...a small
craft advisory has been issued for the western third of the lake.

A lull in the sfc pressure gradient will pinwheel across the Lower
Great Lakes region on Thursday...as separate areas of low pressure will
be found over the Mid western states and off the coast of New Jersey.
This will allow winds and waves to quickly subside.

Strengthening winds on the backside of the aforementioned coastal storm
will then result in strong north to northwest breezes throughout the
region Thursday night and Friday. Widespread SCA's will very likely be
needed for this period.
