.SYNOPSIS...
A slow moving area of low pressure will continue to bring unsettled
weather through Monday, with several more rounds of showers and
scattered thunderstorms. A few storms may contain localized heavy
downpours and gusty winds, mainly this afternoon and evening from
the Genesee Valley into Central NY and the eastern Lake Ontario
region. Cool and drier weather will return Tuesday, with expansive
high pressure then bringing dry weather and a day to day warming
trend later in the week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Late this morning radar imagery shows a few areas of showers
and thunderstorms with the majority of the area rain-free. A
vertically stacked low just upstream across southern Ontario
this morning will make very slow progress eastward today through
tonight, with the mid level low gradually opening up into a
trough across the eastern Great Lakes tonight. Ongoing height
falls will continue to provide a background of general weak
ascent, with numerous embedded convectively augmented vorticity
maxima providing periodic enhanced ascent. In the low levels, a
pre-frontal trough/wind shift will progress eastward across the
area this afternoon and combine with differential heating and
terrain boundaries to provide the necessary low level focus for
convective initiation and maintenance. Diurnal instability will
be modest given all the clouds and showers, but still sufficient
given the synoptic environment to support more widespread
coverage of showers and thunderstorms this afternoon.

Looking at the details, a broken band of showers and storms
should then move/develop eastward towards the Genesee Valley by
early afternoon, then progress eastward across the Finger Lakes
to Central NY and the eastern Lake Ontario region later this
afternoon and early evening. Meanwhile over Western NY,
temporary diminishing of low level convergence behind the pre-
frontal trough combined with a southwest flow off the more
stable Lake Erie should allow for decreasing coverage of rain in
the afternoon across the Niagara Frontier, including Buffalo.

Potential Hazards...Latest ensemble based severe weather guidance
along with implied storm structure from high-res CAMS guidance
suggests some potential for a few storms with gusty winds this
afternoon and early evening from the Genesee Valley eastward to
Central NY and the eastern Lake Ontario region. An isolated severe
storm or two cannot be ruled out, with localized damaging winds the
main risk. PWAT values continue to run in the 1.5"-1.75" range
today, supporting localized heavy downpours with storms. Forecast
profiles suggest storms should move enough to keep the flash
flooding risk low, with the main concern coming if several rounds of
convection train over the same area.

Tonight, the diurnally driven storms along the pre-frontal trough
will continue to move east and weaken during the evening. Overnight,
the surface cold front will gradually move southeast across the
area. An axis of deformation and frontogenesis on the cold side of
the boundary will move from southern Ontario southeastward across
the eastern Great Lakes overnight, supporting additional rounds of
showers and possibly some embedded thunder. Low stratus will expand
across the region overnight, and some of this may begin to intersect
the higher terrain with areas of ridgetop fog developing.

.SHORT TERM /MONDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/...
An upper level low will linger near our region this period, with its
associated cool pool granting a fallish feel to our airmass. Highs
Tuesday will be 10 to 15 degrees below normal, and Wednesday will
fair just slightly warmer. Both days will feature a wealth of
clouds. Synoptic showers will end early Monday night with deeper
moisture shifting eastward, but a lobe of moisture rotating around
this cool upper level low will lend to the formation of lake clouds
and even a few showers/sprinkles Tuesday night and Wednesday south
of Lake Ontario. A few upslope showers are possible east of Lake
Ontario as well. Some clearing Wednesday night, but still enough
moisture lingering in close proximity to this upper level low that
we probably will not completely clear out. This will make for a
tricky forecast for overnight lows both Tuesday night and Wednesday
night as if we clear, or get enough of a clearing break temperatures
could plummet down into the mid 40s inland/mid 50s closer to the
lakes. However if clouds remain thick then the forecasted lows may
end up too cold.

&&

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Wednesday night and Thursday the closed upper level low will
continue to slowly make its way eastward. Depending upon how quickly
it departs...a few showers could linger into Thursday across the
North Country. Otherwise we can expect fair dry weather as the axis
of the surface ridge aligns itself along the NY/PA border...with
gradual airmass modification allowing highs to recover into the
lower to mid 70s in many areas Thursday.

After that...the center of the surface ridge will slide further
southeastward and off the mid-Atlantic coastline through the
remainder of the week. This will continue to support fair dry
weather...with day-to-day airmass modification and a southwesterly
flow of warmer air on its backside allowing high temps to climb back
to typical late summer levels (upper 70s and lower 80s) by Saturday.

.AVIATION /18Z SUNDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Scattered to numerous showers and a few thunderstorms will continue
this morning. The best coverage initially will be east of Lake
Ontario, and also across far Western NY. Most areas will be VFR,
with some MVFR/IFR across the higher terrain of the western Southern
Tier.

Daytime instability and the approach of weak low pressure from the
west will result in increasing coverage of showers and thunderstorms
from late morning through the afternoon. The precise timing and
placement details of convection will be difficult, but expect a
general trend of highest coverage starting in Western NY mid to late
morning through early afternoon, then moving east across the Genesee
Valley to Central NY and the eastern Lake Ontario region as the
afternoon progresses. VFR will prevail most of the time, although
any heavier shower will produce brief/local CIG and VSBY
restrictions.

Tonight, the showers and thunderstorms driven by daytime instability
will diminish during the evening. A mid level trough and cold front
will cross the area overnight, bringing another round of showers and
possibly a few isolated thunderstorms. CIGS will deteriorate to
widespread IFR overnight along and behind the cold front. Some of
the low stratus may begin to intersect the hilltops overnight with
areas of fog and mountain obscuration developing.

Outlook...

Monday...MVFR/IFR ceilings with occasional showers and a chance of a
few thunderstorms.

Tuesday...Improvement to VFR.

Wednesday and Thursday...VFR. River valley fog with local IFR across
the Southern Tier each late night and early morning.

.MARINE...
Based on upstream reports will add a mention of waterspouts to
Lake Erie this morning, mainly along a convergent band which
will fall apart this afternoon when southwest winds increase on
the lake.

South winds this morning will veer to the southwest and increase
this afternoon on Lake Erie following the passage of a pre-frontal
trough. Winds will, at a minimum, support a very choppy afternoon on
Lake Erie, with some potential for a brief period of low end Small
Craft Advisory conditions. Meanwhile on Lake Ontario, winds will
remain southerly and somewhat lower through today. Expect more
showers and thunderstorms today through this evening, with a few
storms possibly producing locally higher winds and waves.

A cold front will move southeast across the lower Great Lakes
tonight. Winds will become north and increase behind the cold front
late tonight and Monday. This will support a round of solid Small
Craft Advisory conditions on Lake Ontario, with a chance of lower
end Small Craft Advisory conditions on Lake Erie as well. The
elevated north winds will continue through Monday night and Tuesday
morning before gradually diminishing through midweek.
