.SYNOPSIS...
A series of disturbances will pass through the area this week,
bringing periods of rain starting tonight and lasting through
Wednesday. After this, cooler air building across the region
Wednesday night through Friday will result in accumulating snows,
especially across higher terrain.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...
Tonight clouds will thicken from west to east ahead of the next
disturbance. This disturbance will carry a slightly stronger
LLJ, with precipitation edging a bit farther northward tonight.
Rain will enter the Western Southern Tier late this evening,
slowly spreading north to near Buffalo by daybreak Tuesday. The
easterly, downslope flow may keep areas along the Lake Erie
shoreline in the lower 40s through the night, with lows in the
upper 30s across the rest of Western New York and lower 30s in
the North Country.

Low pressure will close off aloft, resulting in a surface low
stalling across eastern Michigan Tuesday and Tuesday night. This
will set up a diffluent flow aloft, along with moist 50 knot 850mb
flow which will result in periods of moderate rain across the area
during this time. The steadiest rains will be across Western New
York, where rainfall amounts are likely to be around an inch across
the Western Southern Tier.

It will also be breezy with gusty southeast to northeast winds
courtesy of a 50+ knot LLJ. Expect gusts of 35-45 mph in many
areas Tuesday night through early Wednesday, strongest in the
typical downslope areas off the Chautauqua Ridge and Tug Hill
Plateau.

Temperatures will remain above normal with highs in the mid 40s
to lower 50s on Tuesday and only a limited drop in temps
Tuesday night. This will keep precipitation all rain through
daybreak Wednesday.

.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
...LATE SEASON ACCUMULATING SNOW WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY...

An anomalously deep closed low will impact the eastern Great
Lakes region through the end of the week. Initially, the closed
low will remain nearly stationary across the Upper Mid-West
region Wednesday. Strong ascent and an occluded front will move
across the eastern Great Lakes region Wednesday. Mid-level
southeast flow will create strong convergence for moderate
precipitation and rain will move across the region. Rainfall
amounts of 0.50-0.75 inches are possible with higher amounts
possible Wednesday. Breezy, easterly flow will occur, mainly
north of Interstate-90 Wednesday. Surface temperatures will
likely reach the low to mid 40s by early afternoon, and then
fall through the afternoon. Lower temperatures will be in place
on the higher terrain and will cause rain to change to snow,
mainly on the Tug Hill Wednesday afternoon. The aforementioned
southeast flow may introduce some sleet east of Lake Ontario but
forecast soundings show it would be short-lived. Snow and sleet
accumulations of up to 2 inches are possible on the Tug Hill.

The closed low will track south of the region while a dry slot moves
into southwestern New York Wednesday night. Widespread, steady
precipitation will continue, mainly north of Interstate 90
especially east of Lake Ontario where deep moisture is co-located
with the mid-level front. The closed low will move to the coast
where a secondary surface low has already developed. Wrap around
moisture and upslope flow will bring additional rain and snow into
the region including western NY. Northwest, moist flow will keep
rain and snow across the region through Thursday night.

Temperatures, elevation, and time of year are big factors in this
late season event. The best chance for accumulating snow will be
across the higher terrain and at night. Due to the dry slot moving
into western NY during the peak of the event, western NY will likely
see minor accumulation across the higher terrain. The sweet spot is
the Tug Hill where 7 inches or more snow is possible. A Winter Storm
Watch is in effect for Jefferson, Lewis, and Oswego counties from
2PM Wednesday to 8PM Thursday. This is mainly for the Tug Hill,
however minor accumulations are possible across the region.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
An omega blocking pattern will very gradually slide east across the
CONUS near end of this week and into early next week. Initially on
Friday, deep troughing in the form of a closed low will be located
over the Northeast to the eastern Great Lakes as well as west of the
Rocky Mountains, with a strong ridge of high pressure in the middle
over the central Plains. Unsettled weather will persist across the
forecast area though gradually wind down Friday through Saturday as
the eastern trough maintains a moist, cyclonic flow across the
region. 850H temps may initially be just cold enough around -8/-9C
for some lake enhancement Friday morning, though will likely warm a
few degrees through the day to effectively shut off this response.
This being said, will continue to nudge PoPs above NBM this period
as the continued influx of moisture and shortwave ripples aloft
should maintain at least some shower activity across the region.
Chances for precip will be highest across the higher terrain areas
east of Lake Erie and across the Finger Lakes where orographic lift
will be a factor. In regards to p-type, very marginal boundary layer
and sfc temps will support a mainly elevation-based mix of rain and
snow Friday through Saturday morning, though the strong early April
sun angle should limit the ability for any additional snowfall to
stick during the daytime hours.

The area should begin to dry out Saturday night as the closed low
over New England weakens and shifts out into the northwestern
Atlantic, and the ridge to the west builds east into the Great Lakes
region. As the attendant surface high moves over and eventually east
of the forecast area, clearer skies and warming temps will make
their way to the region by Sunday.

Now on the fringe of our routine forecast range, many eyes will
be on Monday, when the path of totality for the highly
anticipated 2024 Solar Eclipse will cut through much of our
forecast area. Deterministic and ensemble model guidance are in
good agreement on the longwave pattern early next week, with the
sensible weather across our area being dry and on the warmer
side, featuring high temperatures mainly in the 50s. At this
range however, uncertainty is very high in the amount of total
cloud cover and how it will be structured, especially across
western NY. Long-range guidance suggests increasing mid and/or
high clouds through the day, though whether or not these would
be dense enough to obscure any view of the eclipse cannot be
determined at this time. Stay tuned!

.AVIATION /20Z MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
VFR flight conditions expected this evening, with increasing
mid and high clouds this evening.

Rain will slowly push into the Western Southern Tier (KJHW) late
this evening, and will spread northward into KBUF/KIAG/KROC around
daybreak. The increasing moisture from the rain will lower cigs to
MVFR or IFR by Tuesday morning. LLJ will result in LLWS at KJHW
during the day Tuesday, with cigs lowering more during the afternoon
Tuesday.

Outlook...

Tuesday night and Wednesday...MVFR/IFR with periods of rain.

Wednesday night and Thursday...MVFR/IFR with snow, mixed with rain
at times at lower elevations.

Friday...VFR/MVFR. Rain or snow showers likely.

Saturday...Mainly VFR. A chance of rain or snow showers.

.MARINE...
Northeast flow will increase late tonight through Tuesday as a
surface low deepens near the mid-Mississippi Valley. These
winds, strongest on the western waters of Lake Ontario, will
likely lead to small craft advisories for at least the western
Lake Ontario waters, and possibly Lake Erie and the eastern Lake
Ontario waters. It is not out of the realm of possibilities
that frequent gale force gusts occur on the western waters of
Lake Ontario later Tuesday and through Tuesday evening.

A complex low will advance towards the western waters of Lake
Ontario Wednesday, cutting under the Lower Lakes Thursday. East to
northeast flow will remain on Lake Ontario, with winds persistently
20 knots or more Wednesday through early Thursday. Winds are
expected to be lighter on Lake Erie which will lie closer to the
surface low.

.HYDROLOGY...
Storm total rainfall amounts are expected to average 1 to 2
inches late tonight through Wednesday. Given the long duration
with multiple rounds of rain this would not be enough to produce
any flooding due to the dry antecedent conditions.

Looking at MMEFS ensembles, there's a good chance some rivers
and creeks will approach or reach action stage, but a low risk
(generally less than 30 percent) for flooding at any forecast
point. The basins to watch are the upper Genesee River,
Allegheny, and the Buffalo area creeks.
