.SYNOPSIS...
A storm system will pass by to our south and east tonight, brushing
by our inland Southern Tier with a coating of snow. A mid level
disturbance will bring light snow to Western New York later Tuesday,
with lake effect snow southeast of the Lakes that will accumulate
several inches southeast of Lake Ontario tomorrow night. This snow
will end Wednesday, with a brief break of fair weather before the
next clipper system brings additional snow and rain Thursday to the
region.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Cloudy skies this afternoon, that may break for some sun across WNY,
before clouds increase from the south as a synoptic storm system
passes across the southern mid-Atlantic. Models have come into
agreement that this storm will largely miss our region, with perhaps
just a coating of snow brushing by far southern Cattaraugus and
Allegany counties.

Brief clearing with subsidence behind this storm system will give
some sunshine to the Finger Lakes and eastern Lake Ontario region
tomorrow. To the west a mid level shortwave will reach our region
from the west, bringing clouds and light snow to WNY tomorrow
afternoon.

Behind this shortwave, temperatures aloft at 850 hPa will
cool to -8 to -10C such that the widespread, but very light synoptic
snow will become lake effect, with snow becoming concentrated
southeast of Lake Erie, and late in the afternoon along the southern
Lake Ontario shoreline.

Through the daylight hours snow accumulation will be minor, with a
half to one inch on the Chautauqua Ridge and Boston Hills.

Lows tonight will range through the mid to upper 20s, with highs
temperatures tomorrow around freezing inland to mid/upper 30s at
lower elevations.

.SHORT TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
A more winter-like pattern will become established during the
period, with a pair of systems bringing accumulating snow to the
region. The first will be a shortwave pivoting around a closed 500mb
low centered over Quebec Tuesday night. Moisture from this shortwave
and 850mb temps dropping to around -14C will support a period of
lake effect snow. Northwest flow will direct lake snows south and
east of the lakes, with some general light snow region-wide due to
the shortwave. Expecting light snow accumulations Rochester
westward, generally in the 1-2 inch range. Better moisture/lift from
the shortwave southeast of Lake Ontario where 3 to 5 inches are
possible from Wayne to Oswego counties.

Lingering lake snows will taper off quickly on Wednesday as high
pressure builds across the eastern Great Lakes. The ridge axis will
build across the region Wednesday night, providing fair weather and
mostly clear skies. Temperatures will be chilly, with highs on
Wednesday ranging from the mid 20s to lower 30s which is slightly
below normal. Good radiational cooling under the surface high
Wednesday night, so hedge with cooler MOS based model guidance.

A fairly vigourous clipper low will then track across the region
Thursday afternoon/evening. There's good model agreement on the
shortwave, but minor differences in it's track will impact
precipitation type. On Thursday, expecting mainly snow east of Lake
Ontario, with snow or rain possible across the rest of Western NY
depending on the track. After the low passes by there will be a
brief period of lake effect/enhanced snow Thursday night.
Uncertainty in snow amounts across Western NY, with 1 to 3 inches
the most likely outcome. More snow expected east of Lake Ontario
where advisory level snow amounts of 3 to 6 inches are likely. It'll
also be windy behind the departing low Thursday night with gusts of
40 mph possible downwind of the lakes.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
Lake enhanced/effect snow can be expected to start out the day on
Friday behind the departing sfc low from Thursday night. Behind the
departing low, cold air advection will bring 850H temps down to -12C
by around daybreak Friday and slowly cooling through Saturday to
-20C by late Saturday afternoon. The best potential for snow off the
lakes will occur as the mid level shortwave trough moves through
earlier in the day as both synoptic moisture and forcing from the
trough will be most favorable. As the trough tracks east of the area
during the afternoon and drier air moves into the region the lake
response is expected to weaken some, but not completely. East and
southeast of Lake Erie an upstream connection with at least Lake
Huron that sets up will continue the potential for lake effect snow
through most of the afternoon/evening. Winds will be gusty to start
on Friday as the sfc low depart to the east, as the pressure
gradient over the region weakens, so too should the winds.

Friday night through Saturday night, another shortwave trough will
track into the region causing any lingering lake effect snow to
transition to a period of widespread snow showers and lake
enhancement. Best chance for the widespread snow showers expected
for Friday evening through around daybreak Saturday. Models are
still spread on how much widespread snow is expected with the GFS
having a slightly strong shortwave that develops a sfc low vs the
Canadian that is weaker with lake enhanced synoptic snow moving
through with the trough axis. Behind the passing shortwave trough
axis, widespread snow showers will transition more to a lake
enhanced then lake effect setup for Saturday through Saturday night.
With the area remaining within the larger scale trough, an upstream
connection with the Central Great Lakes, and along with brief
upticks in synoptic moisture, the lake response off of both Lake
Erie and Lake Ontario will remain through at least Saturday night,
if not most of the weekend.

Sunday and Sunday night, some lingering lake effect snow will be
possible, but the timing of an incoming ridge along with warm air
advection aloft will determine how long the response off the lakes
can last. Lake effect that does remain Sunday morning should taper
off through the day and slowly shift north in the process.

Weak ridging/zonal flow with a larger ridge over the west will
result in mainly dry conditions for Monday ahead of a sfc low that
will pass north of the area. A few lingering snow showers northeast
of Lake Ontario will still be possible during the morning, with
continued scattering out of the lake response through the day. A
cold front from the sfc low will track southeast toward the area on
Monday night increasing the potential for precipitation.

Temperatures for Friday and Saturday will be at least a few degrees
below normal with the cooler airmass in place. Temperatures warm to
near normal for Sunday. On Monday with the warm air advection,
temperatures should be around 5 to 10 degrees higher than
normal.

.AVIATION /19Z MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
For the 18Z TAFS a deck of MVFR to low end VFR ceiling heights are
upon the region. These lower clouds may scatter out across WNY later
this afternoon and evening before low level moisture/clouds fill back
in from the south from a passing storm system. This system is not
expected to bring any snow to our TAF sites.

Backing winds later tonight behind this system. A weak wave will
bring light snow back into WNY tomorrow with MVFR ceiling heights.
This widespread, very light snow will become concentrated south and
southeast of the Lakes later tomorrow and tomorrow evening with cold
air increasing aloft.

Outlook...

Tuesday night...IFR in lake effect snow between KROC and KART, and
IFR in snow early near KJHW.

Wednesday...VFR/MVFR with a chance of snow showers southeast of Lake
Ontario early.

Thursday...IFR/MVFR in snow Thursday, that may mix with rain across
WNY.

Friday and Saturday...MVFR/VFR in scattered snow showers.

High pressure will keep fair dry weather in place throughout the
Lower Great Lakes today with only gentle to occasional moderate
breezes and negligible waves expected.

A storm system will pass by WELL to the south of the region tonight.
This will prompt winds to shift to the east northeast and eventually
to freshen towards Tuesday morning.

Tuesday...moderate to fresh northeasterlies early will back to the
west northwest during the afternoon. This will generate small craft
advisory conditions on Lake Ontario...so a fresh round of headlines
can be expected in a later forecast package.
