.SYNOPSIS...
Weakening low pressure will pass by to the south of the region
through Friday night while generating widespread light snowfall.
Accumulations will be modest, but will be enough to produce slippery
travel. A very cold airmass will then pour into the region behind
this system over the weekend with occasional light lake effect snow
showers southeast of Lake Ontario and Lake Erie with additional
light accumulations. High pressure will bring a return to dry
weather by Sunday evening, with cold giving way to more seasonable
temperatures early next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
An upstream clipper low and associated mid level trough will move
into the Ohio Valley by daybreak. DCVA and height falls will
overspread the region overnight and broad/weak warm advection and
isentropic ascent will increase. Expect some spotty light snow to
gradually develop across Western NY with steadier light snow moving
in just before daybreak. Any accumulations will be less than an
inch.

Prime time for widespread snow accumulations associated with the
clipper system will be Friday morning through Friday night as the
amplifying parent wave drives vorticity advection into the area and
the surface low slides just south of the area. A fairly long
duration of modest, broad ascent will lead to snowfall rates of
around 0.1-0.2" per hour, equating to general areawide snowfall
totals of 1 to 3 inches by Friday evening. Given that afternoon
temperatures will generally be in the 25 to 30 degree range, impacts
to travel will be modest with slick travel on untreated roads.

Much colder air will pour into the region behind the passage of the
clipper Friday night. This will develop an upslope flow and lake
enhancement through the night, as 850 mb temperatures fall to
near -16C. Additional snow accumulations Friday night will
average another couple of inches, mainly south of the lakes.
This will bring 24 hour snow accumulations to 2-4" for most
areas, but locally higher amounts are certainly possible south of
the lakes.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
Cold air will continue to be sent into the region Saturday ahead a
strong 1040 mb Canadian high. 850 mb temperatures will continue to
fall to near -20C making this the coldest airmass so far this
winter season. Lake effect snow will continue south of the lakes
within a northwest flow, but a gradually lowering inversion
should limit amounts to no more than another couple of inches.
Temperatures Saturday will not get out of the 20s, while
northwest winds up to 15 mph will create wind chill values in
the single digits. Temperatures down into the single digits for
most areas Saturday night with below zero readings across the
North Country with wind chill values for nearly all areas below
zero. The coldest wind chill values across the North County
could be as cold as 10 to 20 below.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
A sfc-850H ridge will build over the eastern Great Lakes Sunday,
moving just east of the region Sunday night as the deeper
700-300mb ridge lags behind to the west. The very chilly airmass
will begin to moderate and shift out of the forecast area in
tandem, though still be quite cold Sunday with 850H temps
ranging from -15C to -17C by the afternoon. This will translate
to sfc high temps in the teens, with single digits possible
across the Tug Hill/Western Dacks. Otherwise, a weak northerly
flow and EQLs of around 5kft and dropping could support a few
additional nuisance lake effect snow showers south of the lakes,
mainly during the first half of the day Sunday before
completely petering out by Sunday evening. A dry and chilly
night on tap for Sunday night with lows in the single digits,
areawide, and subzero temps across the North Country

A period of areawide dry weather will then persist through Monday
as the upper level ridge moves over the region. A series of
shortwave troughs will then move through the upper level pattern
across the Great Lakes and Northeast, causing a more active
weather pattern to reemerge across the forecast area. Guidance
continues to suggest that the airmass will continue to slowly
moderate, with 850H temps on either side of -5C by the time the
next swath of precipitation arrives Monday night. This should
support snow as the dominant ptype into Tuesday, with more of a
rain/snow mix thereafter though ptype will need to be monitored
as the details come into better focus. Continued chances for
snow will be greater across the higher terrain areas and during
the nighttime hours as sfc temperatures see a day to day warming
trend. Daytime highs could possibly warm all the way into the
40s in spots towards the end of the week.

.AVIATION /06Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
While VFR conditions will be found throughout much of the region for
the remainder of the overnight...light snow will start to move
across the far western counties. This will encourage vsbys to lower
to between 1 and 3SM.

Weakening low pressure will then pass south of the region Friday
through Friday night. This system will bring widespread, light snow
to most of the area. The first of the light snow will develop across
Western NY by late tonight, then spread east across the rest of the
area Friday, continuing through the first half of Friday night.
Expect the fine, light snow to be efficient at dropping VSBY, with
widespread IFR and 1-2SM VSBY once the snow begins. CIGS will drop
to lower end MVFR for lower elevations and IFR higher terrain.

The widespread light snow Friday evening will taper off from west to
east overnight, but lake effect snow showers will continue
south/southeast of Lake Ontario and Lake Erie as cold air deepens.
The short fetch will keep the lake effect snow light, but will allow
more local IFR to continue downwind of the lakes.

Outlook...

Saturday...Scattered to numerous snow showers and local IFR/MVFR
southeast of the lakes...with MVFR CIGS outside of lake effect.
Sunday...Local MVFR/IFR in lake effect snow showers southeast of the
lakes. VFR/MVFR outside of lake effect.
Monday...VFR.
Tuesday...Restrictions possible with rain/snow showers likely.

.MARINE...
High pressure will continue to build east across Quebec overnight,
with a short period of relatively light winds on the lower Great
Lakes.

Freshening northeast winds on Friday will bring Small Craft Advisory
conditions first to the west half of Lake Ontario. Winds will
increase later in the afternoon on Lake Erie, with Small Craft
Advisory conditions on both lakes Friday night through early
Saturday as winds gradually become north to northwest. There is a
chance Small Craft Advisory conditions may last through Saturday
night on Lake Ontario.
