.SYNOPSIS...
A weak system will move through the eastern Great Lakes Wednesday
with light rain, mixing with and changing to snow through the
afternoon and overnight hours. Light, lake enhanced snow east of the
lakes Wednesday night will taper off through the night. The coldest
air of the winter season will arrive by late in the week and this
weekend.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
Aside from a few very light rain or wet snow showers lingering east
of the lakes through the remainder of the overnight, drier air
edging northward from a surface high will end precipitation by late
tonight. No new snow accumulation expected.

Wednesday will likely start dry across our region, with a mostly
cloudy sky. A rather robust trough will develop as a Pacific
shortwave and northern branch jet wave deepen a trough across the
Great Lakes. Shallow isentropic lift along a baroclinic boundary
draped over New England to the Ohio Valley will yield light rain
showers (higher elevation snow) Wednesday morning that will become
more numerous Wednesday afternoon with the advection of deeper
moisture and broad scale lift ahead of the upstream trough. As a
colder airmass begins to push eastward along the trough, expect
mainly plain rain to mix with and change to snow through the
afternoon/evening hours.

Stronger cold air advection Wednesday night will bring primarily
snow, that will taper off as lake effect snow east of the Lakes as
850 hPa temperatures drop down to near -10C. Moisture begins to
deplete from the snow growth zone late Wednesday night east of Lake
Erie...and later east of Lake Ontario. This, combined with quickly
falling lake effect snow parameters will limit the overall snow
accumulations to just an inch or two east of Lake Erie, while two to
four inches of lake snow is possible on the Tug Hill Wednesday night.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
A northwest flow of colder air will continue into Thursday morning,
supporting a few more light lake effect snow showers southeast of
Lake Ontario and Lake Erie. A surface ridge will briefly build
across the eastern Great Lakes in the afternoon and evening, further
lowering inversion heights and disrupting low level flow, bringing
an end to lake effect. Any additional accumulations Thursday morning
will be minimal, with a coating to an inch of fresh accumulation
southeast of the lakes.

Our attention then turns back to the synoptic scale. An open mid
level trough and associated surface clipper low will move from the
upper Mississippi Valley Thursday night to the Ohio Valley Friday.
The surface low is then forecast to dissipate over the Ohio Valley
later Friday as secondary coastal cyclogenesis takes over well
offshore of the east coast. The mid level trough will continue to
cross the eastern Great Lakes and provide weak large scale ascent
across our region, and a lingering inverted trough and deformation
axis will provide some low level focus. This system will bring some
general light snow to most of western and central NY Friday through
Friday night, with minor coating to 2" accumulations.

The trough will deliver a much colder airmass into the Northeast US
for the weekend. A northwest flow of colder air and growing lake
induced instability will support increasing coverage of lake effect
snow showers southeast of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario later Friday
night as the general light synoptic snow departs.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Brief, but sharp amplification of the flow pattern across North
America will allow a deep trough to dig into eastern Canada and the
northeast US this weekend, delivering the coldest airmass of the
season thus far. Any lingering light synoptic snow will have
departed by early Saturday morning. A cold northwest/NNW flow across
the lakes will support the likelihood of light lake effect snow
showers southeast of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario Saturday through at
least Saturday night, and possibly lingering into Sunday morning.
While the airmass is quite cold, the cold air quickly becomes
shallow and dry as strong surface high pressure builds east across
the Great Lakes. The negative influence of dry air, lowering
inversion heights, and short northwest fetch will keep the snow
light, with minor accumulations of a few inches southeast of the
lakes in more persistent bands.

The other story this weekend will be cold temperatures. Highs
Saturday will reach the lower 20s for lower elevations and upper
teens higher terrain. Sunday will be even colder, with highs in the
upper teens for lower elevations and lower teens high terrain. There
will be enough wind to produce single digit wind chills Saturday
through Sunday night.

The surface high will crest over the eastern Great Lakes Sunday
night and Monday, supporting a return to dry weather. The high will
drift off the east coast Monday night and Tuesday, with increasing
warm advection across the Ohio Valley and eastern Great Lakes. A
weak trough will try to move into the otherwise building eastern US
ridge position, with this feature possibly bringing a little light
wet snow/rain mix for Tuesday. Temperatures will trend back to near
the late December average by Tuesday after the cold weekend.

.AVIATION /07Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
A mix of low VFR/high end MVFR CIGS expected through the remainder
of the overnight, with MVFR CIGS predominant across the higher
terrain (KJHW). A very light rain or wet snow shower possible east
of the lakes, ending by early Wednesday morning as drier air
continues to work in across the region. Exception may be east of
Lake Ontario, but will be inconsequential.

Mix of low VFR/high end MVFR CIGS lower elevations and MVFR CIGS
across higher terrain will continue for the start of Wednesday
morning. CIGS will become predominantly MVFR later in the
morning/midday as an area of low pressure moves from the Ohio Valley
to eastern PA by early Wednesday afternoon.

Conditions will then rapidly deteriorate as precipitation shield
associated with aforementioned area of low pressure system quickly
overspreads the region from southwest to northeast through the
early/mid afternoon. Once precipitation begins, expect widespread
IFR (CIGS/VSBY) conditions that will last across all of western and
northcentral NY through at least the remainder of the day.
Precipitation will start out as plain light rain or rain/snow mix
across lower elevations, while light snow is likely from the start
across the higher terrain.

Widespread precipitation pulls east of the area Wednesday evening
with a transition to more localized lake effect/upslope snow showers
east/southeast of the lakes. CIGS across lower elevations should
improve to MVFR during the evening, while IFR CIGS hang on across
the higher terrain (KJHW). VSBYs will improve to mainly VFR,
except localized IFR in areas of snow showers.

Outlook...

Wednesday night...Precipitation becomes all snow and tapers off east
of the Lakes late. IFR/MVFR in precipitation returning to MVFR/VFR
elsewhere.

Thursday...Scattered snow showers with local IFR/MVFR east and
southeast of the lakes...with MVFR to VFR elsewhere.

Friday...Snow showers and IFR likely.

Saturday...Scattered to numerous snow showers and local IFR/MVFR
southeast of the lakes...with MVFR to VFR elsewhere.

Sunday...Mainly VFR flight conditions. A lingering flurry of snow
(brief IFR) southeast of the Lakes.

.MARINE...
Continued cold air advection will maintain small craft conditions on
the eastern half of Lake Ontario overnight. Surface high pressure
will pass just to the south of the lakes late tonight and Wednesday,
allowing for both winds and waves to further subside.

Following a brief period of non-SCA conditions Wednesday with the
surface high nearby, another mid level trough with stronger cold air
advection will arrive for Wednesday night. This will bring
strengthening westerly winds and likely small craft conditions
Wednesday night into Thursday morning for Lake Ontario, and possibly
Lake Erie as well.
