.SYNOPSIS...
Notably warmer weather will continue through tonight. Another round
of rain will develop late today and continue through early Wednesday
before changing to wet snow from west to east Wednesday afternoon as
colder air filters back into the area. Locally heavy lake effect
snow will then develop east of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario Wednesday
night and continue through early Friday, before another warming
trend arrives next weekend.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Abundant low level moisture will continue to support areas of fog
and some drizzle in a few higher terrain spots early this morning.
Otherwise, a lack of forcing/ascent will result in mainly dry
weather day through at least mid afternoon. It will remain on
the mild side today with temperatures around 10 degrees above
seasonable normals, with highs in the mid 40s to lower 50s.

A mid level trough will quickly dig and sharpen over the Mississippi
Valley. A low/mid level baroclinic zone will tighten and strengthen
on the eastern flank of the trough from the southeast US into NY/PA.
A frontal wave will move north from the Ohio Valley late this
afternoon and tonight. A shield of rain will develop late this
afternoon and continue through tonight as frontogenetic forcing
large scale ascent aloft increase over the area. Temperatures
will remain well above freezing, with all rain expected.

.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
...SIGNIFICANT LAKE EFFECT SNOW POSSIBLE WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH
EARLY FRIDAY...

On Wednesday, the back edge of a sfc low tracking northeast across
PA & Eastern NY along a frontal boundary will bring widespread rain
showers across the entire forecast area during the morning hours. As
the sfc low and frontal boundaries track east, cold air advection
behind the system will start to change rain to a mixture of rain and
snow and eventually all snow by Wednesday evening.

Cooling temperatures aloft along with a mid-level trough tracking
across the region will set the stage for lake effect snow to once
again impact western and north central NY from Wednesday afternoon
through at least Friday morning. Temperatures aloft will cool to as
low as -17C to -18C by Thursday night. This combined with the mid-
level trough and lingering synoptic moisture within the trough, will
provide for the potential for a significant lake effect snow event
east-northeast of both lakes. Snowfall rates of 1-3"/hr (possibly
higher at times) are expected as the lake bands tap into the DGZ and
have caps of around 12k feet, or higher. There remains the potential
for a foot or more of snow with this event for areas east-northeast
of the lakes.

Lake Erie, lake enhancement will start during the mid-afternoon on
Wednesday as temperatures aloft cool to around -6C to -7C over the
approx. 6C waters of Lake Erie. As the synoptic system shifts
further away from the region and cooling aloft continues, a pure
lake effect setup will be in place by the mid to late evening on
Wednesday night. With a mostly 250-260 flow off of the lake, lake
snow will focus on areas of northern Chautauqua/Cattaraugus counties
as well as for central and southern Erie County. The lake band is
expected to extend inland to the NW half of Wyoming, and southern
Genesee counties. Passing disturbances will cause some north/south
fluctuations in the band movement over the Wednesday night through
Friday morning time period, but the band will mainly focus on areas
listed above.

Lake Ontario, similar to Lake Erie, precipitation will change to
snow by late Wednesday afternoon, becoming lake enhanced Wednesday
evening, and pure lake effect overnight. There may be a some drier
air that briefly moves in over Lake Ontario, causing a brief
disruption of the lake response, but lake snow should re-develop to
the northeast and then east of the lake on Thursday morning. Similar
to the Lake Erie band, passing disturbances will cause the lake band
to shift north/south some over the entire time period of the event,
but the greatest snowfall amounts will fall east-northeast of the
lake, with the greatest snow amounts expected for portions of the
Tug Hill, and points north toward Watertown.

Temperatures on Wednesday will be in the low to mid 40s to start the
day, but will cool from west to east behind the passing sfc low and
cold front. Temperatures will fall off for Thursday, with high
temperatures only reaching the upper teens to near 30 for the day.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
Potent lake effect snow event will come to an end on Friday as
high pressure and associated dry air/warm advection and a
pronounced southerly wind shift overspreads the area,
effectively shutting down the lake effect machine from southwest
to northeast through the day. Another inch or so will be
possible east of Lake Erie before dissipating through the
morning hours, while an additional few inches will be possible
east of Lake Ontario before shutting down there through the
afternoon. Expect mainly dry, but chilly weather outside of any
lake effect with highs ranging mainly through 20s areawide.

High pressure remains in control as it slowly shifts east across New
England, bringing mainly dry weather for Friday night and Saturday.
Continued warm advection will boost highs some 5-10 degrees for
Saturday, into the 30s for all but possibly the Tug and western
Dacks.

Next system approaches for the second half of the weekend. Some
discrepancy in timing exists amongst the Big 3, with rain or wet
snow showers possible as early as Saturday evening, with any
precipitation to be mainly in the form of rain showers on Sunday as
the entire area warms well above the freezing mark. System pulls
east Sunday night with high pressure progged to try to build in for
the start of the new work week. Some timing discrepancies still
exist per usual this far out, so will keep at least areas of low
chances for some rain/snow showers Sunday night onward, again become
mainly liquid on Monday. That said, the overall trend should be
toward drying for the start of the new work week. Highs remain above
average with mainly mid to upper 30s higher terrain and mid 40s
lower elevations.

.AVIATION /12Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Areas of fog and very patchy drizzle will likely continue
through the morning, especially across higher terrain with areas
of IFR/LIFR. Lower elevations will likely improve to MVFR CIGS.
Light rain will become more widespread late in the day as a
frontal wave approaches, with IFR continuing across higher
terrain and MVFR lower elevations.

Outlook...

Tonight...MVFR/IFR with periods of light rain.

Wednesday...MVFR/IFR with rain changing to wet snow from west to
east.

Wednesday night...MVFR/IFR with wet snow tapering off, then heavier
lake effect snow east of the lakes with local LIFR.

Thursday through Friday...Local lake effect snow with LIFR east of
Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. Close call for KBUF, heavier snow may
remain just south of the airfield. VFR/MVFR elsewhere.

Saturday...Mainly VFR.

.MARINE...
Quiet marine conditions expected through most of Wednesday as a weak
pressure gradient across the lower Great lakes maintains relatively
light winds.

A strong cold front will sweep across the eastern Great Lakes late
Wednesday and Wednesday night leading to increased westerly winds.
Sustained speeds of 30 knots are likely from Wednesday night through
Thursday afternoon with the potential for gale force winds,
especially behind the cold front Wednesday night into Thursday over
the eastern basin of Lake Erie and all of Lake Ontario. Gale Watches
have been issued on both lakes during this time frame.

Conditions will improve on Lake Erie and Lake Ontario Friday as
high pressure nears the region and winds lighten considerably
and turn more southerly.

.HYDROLOGY...
Rainfall Monday averaged 0.25"-0.50 inches in most areas.
Following a break through most of today, another round of
rainfall with 0.25"-0.50" is expected late in the day through
Wednesday for most of the area, except 0.50" to 1.0" across the
Tug Hill region.

These rainfall amounts, combined with ongoing snowmelt, will
bring within-bank rises on area rivers and creeks through
midweek. Official forecasts from the RFC along with ensemble
forecasts from the MMEFS continue to suggest a low chance of
flooding. The Black River basin, with more snow to melt and
higher rainfall amounts, will see the most significant rises
later this week, and a low chance of reaching minor flood
stage.
