.SYNOPSIS...
Typical winter cold will settle into the region this weekend with a
few rounds of snow and lake effect snow tonight through Sunday
night. Most areas will see light accumulations, but moderate
accumulations are expected in a few locations where lake effect snow
persists the longest southeast and east of the lakes. Dry weather
will return Monday, with a warming trend through the middle of next
week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
An area of light snow to the north of low pressure passing well
south of the region will produce a general light snow with an inch
or so across the Southern Tier overnight, reaching as far north as
the western Finger Lakes.

A band of lake effect snow continues over Oswego County late this
evening. There are embedded moderate to marginally heavy snow
showers within this band, but the weak and somewhat sheared flow has
prevented a fully organized single band from developing. This band
has begun to move south. Expect totals of 3-6" across Oswego County
from late afternoon through early Saturday morning, thus the Winter
Weather Advisory still in effect.

Overnight, this band will move south and onshore along much of the
south shore from western Oswego County westward to Orleans County,
including portions of the Rochester Metro area. This may drop a
quick 1-3" of accumulation along much of the south shore, especially
north of Route 31. Some lake enhancement may also produce 1-2"
accumulations east of Lake Erie from southern Erie County into the
Southern Tier.

Off Lake Erie, a weak band of lake effect is embedded within the
shield of light snow, moving onshore from Dunkirk northeast through
southern Erie County to western Wyoming County. This area will
likely see a few inches of accumulation overnight.

Saturday an upper level trough will cross the area while also
forcing a surface cold front through the area. As the snow shower
activity associated with the low to our south tapers off to the
southeast, expect an uptick in snow shower activity from northwest
to southeast associated both with the upper level trough, and with a
band of possibly brief heavier snow along and ahead of the cold
front as it moves through. Most areas will just see a coating to an
inch or so south of Lake Ontario into the Southern Tier and Finger
Lakes. More persistent lake enhancement along the south shore of
Lake Ontario may produce another 1-3" from Orleans County eastward
across the Rochester area to Wayne County. Given the combination of
later tonight and tomorrow with the potential for local 3-5"
accumulations, issued a Winter Weather Advisory along the south
shore of Lake Ontario including the Rochester area. Expect these
higher totals to be localized, as is often the case in the Rochester
area.

Some lake effect and upslope snow will also produce local 1-3"
amounts across the higher terrain east of Lake Erie on Saturday,
especially the Chautauqua Ridge.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
Lake effect snow will be ongoing Saturday night as one trough axis
moves east of the region and another pivots in from the west across
the Great Lakes. Surface low attendant to this secondary trough will
track from central to southeastern Ontario Saturday night and then
east into southern Quebec Sunday, with 850H temps across the eastern
Great Lakes bottoming out around -16C out ahead of it. This
approaching system will mark a notable backing in the low-level flow
from the WNW to the SW, re-directing the previously transient LE
snow into focused bands east to northeast of the lakes Saturday
night into Sunday.

Off Lake Erie...Relatively disorganized lake effect snow initially
located across portions of the Southern Tier and far southern Erie
county Saturday night will quickly organize into a single band east
of the lake early Saturday night. As the low-level flow backs about
40 degrees overnight and fetch/moisture over the lake increases,
this band is expected to intensify and begin marching northward up
the lake overnight into Sunday morning. It will cross over the
Buffalo Metro over the course of the pre-dawn hours, with BUFKIT
soundings indicating ample lift below and saturation through the DGZ
with EQLs around 7k feet which supports a burst of moderate snow
across the area as it does so. The band will waver in strength over
far northern Erie and Niagara counties Sunday morning, before a more
subtle veering of the winds allows the band to sag southward before
stalling out across central Erie and Genesee counties. Still a fair
amount of uncertainty here in how long the band takes up residence
in this particular area and its overall intensity before the low to
the north weakens and moves further into Quebec, causing a more
substantial veering of the flow which will cause the band to shove
south of Buffalo and back into the Southern Tier Sunday evening.

Off Lake Ontario...With more of an initial WNW component to the
flow, the primary convergent band is expected to first redevelop
southeast of the lake somewhere between northeastern Monroe and
southern Oswego counties. Much like with the band over Lake Erie,
this band will also quickly begin to march north as it strengthens
overnight. BUFKIT soundings over Lake Ontario look a bit more
impressive being in closer proximity to the vorticity maxima over
southern Ontario, with deep saturation and EQLs Saturday night
closer to 8-9k feet (near the top of the DGZ). This should support a
slightly more intense band compared to that over Lake Erie, though
at least through Saturday night the band will be moving quite a bit
which should limit totals in any one area. By daybreak Sunday
morning however it is expected to be squarely over Jefferson County
and over the Watertown Metro area. Here the band may make subtle
north/south wobbles through the day before making a sharp southward
push across the Tug Hill Plateau.

Lake effect off both lakes will begin to substantially weaken and
continue to be pushed southeast of the lakes Sunday night as broad
surface high pressure and drier air begins building across the Great
Lakes. A wealth of clouds and lighter snow showers will likely
linger into Monday as the primary 850H ridge builds in. Dry weather
with limited clearing then expected for Monday night.

Snowfall totals east and northeast of the lakes Saturday night
through Sunday evening will depend heavily on residence time of the
primary lake effect bands over any one particular area. At this
juncture, in the most favored areas northeast of Lake Erie 4-7" of
fresh snow can be expected while 8-12" looks more plausible east-
northeast of Lake Ontario.

In addition to the localized lake effect snow, also in play here
will be the moderate to strong winds northeast of the lakes Sunday,
particularly northeast of Lake Erie which will be further removed
from the center of low pressure over Canada. Here there should be
ample mixing and funneling of the 40-50kt LLJ down the lake to
produce wind gusts of 40-45mph at times across the Niagara Frontier.
With occasionally moderate LE snow and relatively fluffy snow ratios
(close to or just under 20:1), this will be more than enough to
produce areas of blowing snow and sharply reduced visibilities
within the main lake effect band. This will also be a concern east
of Lake Ontario where gusts of 35mph will be possible within the
primary band.

Temperatures this period will be seasonably cold, with highs Sunday
and Monday near or just below freezing and lows each night generally
in the teens to low 20s. The blustery winds on Sunday will likely
make it 'feel' quite colder with wind chills in the teens for many.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
A period of quieter weather expected Tuesday through Wednesday as a
stout mid-level ridge continues to build over and eventually east of
the Great Lakes, with surface high pressure migrating to the
Canadian Maritimes. Thereafter the next sharpening longwave trough
will begin pivoting southeast across the Great Lakes, bringing the
next chances for widespread precipitation to the region. Lots of
uncertainty with the overall evolution of this system, especially in
regards to timing and precipitation type. At this range expect
increasing chances for precip Wednesday night with temps at the
surface and aloft support rain as the dominant p-type for all but
the highest elevations of the Tug Hill. Unsettled weather will then
last through Thursday with possible lake effect redeveloping
southeast of the lakes late Thursday night into Friday.

The high pressure center migrating east of the region will allow for
a southerly flow to develop out ahead of the next system, supporting
a decent warming trend through midweek. Temps Tuesday will top out
in the low 40s south of Lake Ontario with low/mid 30s east of the
lake, rising to the 40s across nearly the entire region by Wednesday
afternoon. Sharply cooler temps arrive behind the departing system
by Friday.

.AVIATION /06Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Lake effect snow will continue to produce local IFR southeast of the
lakes tonight through Saturday. A system passing to the south of the
area will also bring some light snow and IFR overnight across the
Southern Tier. KROC and KJHW will be most impacted by the lake
effect snow, especially overnight through the first half of Saturday
with IFR VSBY at times. Some of the snow showers will likely be
somewhat convective in nature with brief periods of moderate snow
possible, but these brief periods of 1/2SM snow should not last long
at any one location.

Outside of lake effect areas, expect a mix of MVFR/VFR CIGS with
scattered flurries at times tonight through Saturday.

Outlook...

Saturday night and Sunday...MVFR/VFR in scattered snow showers.
Localized lake effect snow east and northeast of Lake Erie and Lake
Ontario at times with IFR. This may impact KBUF and KART at times.

Monday...VFR/MVFR with a chance of snow showers southeast of the
lakes.

Tuesday and Wednesday...Mainly VFR.

eastern Lake Ontario set to expire late this evening.

Low pressure dropping across western Ontario province to northern
