On Sunday, it will be even drier in some areas with low minimum 
humidity along with another round of gusty winds. The strongest 
winds are expected to be along the foothills from Boulder south 
and on the plains southeast of Denver, as well as in Park county. 
Therefore a Red Flag Warning will be in effect for these areas 
from 11 AM to 6 PM Sunday.

Fire weather conditions will remain high on Monday. It will be
windier, with gusts up to 60 mph over the mountains and east
slopes, up to 50 mph near the foothills, and 30-40 mph on the
plains. In spite of the higher humidities, critical fire weather
conditions are again possible over the plains.

humidity (locally into the single digits) to result in widespread
critical fire weather conditions for the lower elevations. The
strongest winds and highest fire danger will be focused across
areas closest to the foothills. There, Red Flag conditions may
persist for a prolonged period, extending through late evening as
winds increase late in the day. 

On Monday, winds will strengthen considerably, with gusts above
40-50 mph becoming widespread for the lower elevations. Although
some moderation in humidity levels is anticipated (some warned 
areas may bottom out between 15-20%), critical conditions are
likely given the substantial wind speeds. An additional northward
expansion of headlines remains possible for Monday if humidity

.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)

The overall synoptic pattern remains relatively unchanged for today,
with just a slight increase in northwest flow aloft as upper-level
pressure gradients tighten from a slow conversion of two low
pressure systems to our northwest and southwest. As a result, a
drying subsident flow will lead to breezy conditions for the
mountains, foothills, and portions of the urban corridor and plains.
Temperatures will climb approximately 10 degrees compared to
yesterday, with low 60's for the majority of the lower elevations.
The dry/breezy combination will lead to the development of locally
critical fire weather conditions, which should be most pronounced
west of I-25 and across the northern plains bordering Wyoming, where
winds will be strongest (gusts 25-40 mph). The higher mountain
elevations may see gusts closer to 50 mph, especially above
treeline. Abundant sun will return, although a few wave clouds may
make an appearance throughout the day along the lee of the Front
Range. See the Fire Weather discussion below for more details on the
fire danger.

.LONG TERM...(Sunday through Friday)

On Sunday the driest air will be over us, with the winds aloft
increasing a bit. There will likely be some wave clouds
developing, but we still expect a sunny or mostly sunny day with
temperatures a bit warmer. There may be some blocking of the flow
from a little Front Range mountain wave that will shift the
strongest winds on the plains to areas south of Denver and in and
near the foothills, so fire weather concerns will mainly be in
those areas.

The flow aloft goes more westerly for Sunday night and Monday.
While there will be a mountain wave, there's not much to foster
any amplification. Winds around mountain top level will be in the
30-40 knot range, so gusts of 40-60 mph are likely over the ridges
and higher foothills, and down into wind prone lower areas at
times. But the chance of high winds looks pretty low (<20%). With
the persistent west wind and no cold air on the plains, some of
this momentum should spill out onto the plains at lower speeds,
but enough to keep areas west of I-25 warm overnight and give them
a good start on warming up Monday. Moisture will continue to
increase for more cloud cover, and there could be enough wave
cloudiness to cool the Front Range area a bit though the winds
should still let the highs get into the 60s. Orographic snow
should develop over the ridges as the moisture increases.

There's better model agreement on Tuesday's trough now. The
GFS/Canadian continue to be a little stronger and slower, with the
main result being a little stronger intrusion of cold air on the
plains Tuesday that lingers into Wednesday while faster/shallower
models have less cooling and a quick recovery. NBM looks like a
reasonable compromise, except for some statistical oddities with
the temperature change on Tuesday. We liked the hourly NBM
temperatures and just tweaked them a little for steady or falling
in the middle and later parts of the day, and adjusted the rest to
fit. This gives a chance of some rain showers in the morning, but
mostly snow for the afternoon. With the continued westerly flow,
we don't expect plains showers to amount to much. There could be
an inch or two of snow accumulation somewhere with warm ground and
air temperatures, but most places should see less than that with
probably no impact on travel.

The mountains will be a different story with a prolonged period of
orographic snow. Models vary on the duration of deep moisture and
QG lift, but there will be a period with strong winds and deep
instability late Monday and Monday night. There's a lot of variety
of model QPFs on top of a background of a quarter to half inch
from the steady orographics, with either banded structures giving
another quick half inch some places, or more intense orographic
snow with up to 1.5 inches of precipitation for the event over the
Park Range. The greatest threat looks to be along the northern
border, but there will likely be some impact to travel over all
the mountain passes Monday night into Tuesday morning. The valleys
will be fairly warm and not get a lot out of the orographics, but
there still could be some impact from shower bands mainly Monday
evening.

Wednesday is the transition day and highs will depend on how
quickly the cold air is displaced/moderated as the flow aloft goes
westerly and decreases and low levels go southerly. EC ensemble
members range from upper 30s to around 60, the NBM 40s looks like
a good deterministic forecast for now. For the end of the week,
we're in dry lighter WSW flow. The weak southern low comes by
south of us, but it looks like we'll be in drier air behind the
northern trough so we may not even get clouds out of that system.
There are hints of some moisture coming up from the southwest by
Friday that could give us some thicker clouds and light mountain
showers again, but more likely this will still be west and
northwest of us. There's little spread on model temperatures by
Friday: upper 50s or 60s across the plains.

VFR through the period. WNW/NW winds will prevail across all the
terminal by 20z. Those winds are already in play at BJC and DEN,
so APA is all that's left. Peak gusts up to 25 kts at DEN possible
this afternoon, stronger for KBJC. Expect a return to drainage in
the evening for KDEN/KAPA. Gusty WNW winds expected again for all
the terminals by Sunday afternoon.

.FIRE WEATHER...

For today, breezy west winds will strengthen by the afternoon,
with the axis of strongest winds focused over the mountains,
foothills, adjacent plains west of I-25, and northern plains
straddling the Wyoming border. Relative humidity values will lower
into the mid to locally low teens this afternoon. Snowmelt over
the past few days has been sufficient to permit the availability
of cured fine fuels. across the lower elevations. As such, a Red
Flag Warning is in place for the northern I-25/plains for this
afternoon. It's possible that some wave cloud development east of
the Front Range slightly tapers the warming/drying, but at this
point there appears to be enough of a potential for meeting
warning criteria to run with the mentioned headlines.

Sunday will be drier, with minimum humidities in the 10-15% range
over the plains, and 15-25% over the east slopes of the Front
Range. The strongest winds are expected to be along the foothills
from Boulder south and on the plains southeast of Denver, as well
as in Park county. A Fire Weather Watch has been issued from
Boulder and Denver southward where the low humidities and winds
overlap. Elsewhere it will be windy over the high mountains with
warm, dry, and breezy conditions over the northern and eastern
parts of the plains.

Monday will be windier, with gusts up to 60 mph over the mountains
and east slopes, up to 50 mph near the foothills, and 30-40 mph on
the plains. Humidities will be higher, but critical fire weather
conditions are possible over the plains. Tuesday will be windy but
cooler behind a cold front. Lighter winds with warmer temperatures are
expected for the rest of the week.

This hazardous weather outlook is for northeast and north central
Colorado.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

The northern urban corridor and northern plains will see critical
fire weather conditions this afternoon due to gusty northwest
winds and low humidity.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Sunday through Friday

It will be windy in the mountains and foothills Sunday and
Monday, with gusts in the 40 to 60 mph range. These gusty winds
will spread east onto the plains, especially on Monday when gusts
to 50 mph will be possible. These strong winds combined with the
dry conditions will lead to elevated fire weather conditions
across the snow free lower elevations.

Snow develops in the northern Colorado mountains Monday and
continues into Tuesday. The snow and windy conditions will
produce difficult travel over the passes late Monday into
Tuesday. Snow spreads onto the plains Tuesday behind a strong cold
front. Any accumulations across the lower elevations are expected
to be light, though some brief travel impacts are possible.
