.KEY MESSAGES...

- Another round of snow for the mountains tonight into Monday with
  potentially travel impacts Monday morning along I-70 through
  Summit County.

- Strong winds become widespread Monday with potential for
  scattered power outages, blowing dust, and rapid wildfire
  spread. Some potential (40%) for brief Front Range mountain wave
  amplification in the morning, otherwise a widespread marginal
  high wind event is expected.

- Weather pattern settles down somewhat by Tuesday, but trends
  are for additional rounds of mountain snow. Light snow Tuesday,
  but potentially more significant snow and blowing snow again
  Wednesday night - Thursday, and then again toward Saturday.
  Slight chance of light snow on the plains.

- Colder temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve and start to
  2025 (Wednesday). Then tempered warming in the latter half of
  the week.

For today, mountain snow has tapered off to ridgetop flurries for
now. There's more cirrus coming, but the plains will be mostly
sunny for a while and there's even some sun making it through in
many mountain areas for a little bit. We'll bump up this
afternoon's temperatures slightly.

For tomorrow's wind, this mornings models are a bit less excited.
The above mountain inversion stays pretty high while the winds are
greatest in the morning, then comes down a bit after that. There's
also a bit less flow overall. There's still some potential for a
sweet spot as the speed max passes for a brief window of wave
amplification, perhaps one of those events where a few spots like
Boulder amplify and not anywhere else. That could still produce
80-90 mph wind gusts for an hour or two. But overall, this is
looking like a marginal widespread high wind event. We'll keep the
watches as there's still a pretty significant threat of meeting
the criteria, but the threat of something bigger is looking less
at this hour.

speeds will stay below warning criteria.  Across the plains, it will
be dry and mild today with highs in the 50's.  Around the Denver
area, readings could reach 60 degrees.

For tonight, the flow aloft will gradually become more WNW as
moisture increases overnight.  Favorable orographics will be in
place and with placement of upper level jet this should allow for
enhancement of snowfall, especially after midnight.  Winds will
remain gusty overnight with blowing snow and poor visibility over
the mtn passes. Across the plains, it will be dry with winds
increasing late tonight near the foothills and along the WY
border.

.LONG TERM /Monday through Saturday/...

It's a complex earth, wind, and fire (and snow) forecast so we'll
break it down by element the best we can through Monday.

Wind: Gradients strengthen late tonight and remain high into
Monday as the upper level disturbance moves to our east. Cross
mountain flow strengthens to 50-55 kts, with these speeds dipping
very close to the surface on the northeast plains Monday morning.
With the gradients, relatively well mixed airmass, and large scale
QG subsidence, we should have little trouble transferring a good
majority of that momentum toward the surface. More concerningly is
potential for mountain wave enhancement in/near the foothills as
seen in the mesoscale models. To be clear, this is not our
typical setup with a mountain top stable layer. However, we will
have little vertical speed shear and moderate subsidence as we
previously spoke of. The flow is there, but at the same time we'll
also be in the left exit region of the upper level jet early in
the morning and snowfall in the mountains typically breaks down
mountain wave enhancement. Thus, this would be an atypical event
in many ways, but mesoscale models suggest a rather impressive
high wind event not just for the foothills but spreading east
through the I-25 Corridor with gusts of 60-70 mph potentially
even for downtown Denver. That's rare, but given the gradients and
lack of shear we think there is enough threat to add the remainder
of Denver metro, southern Foothills, and Palmer Divide to the High
Wind Watch for Monday. Potential impacts would be downed trees and
power lines, scattered power outages, and rapid fire spread - more
on that in the fire weather section. The strong winds should
spread east rather quickly across the plains as the stronger
subsidence develops, so high winds may begin as early as 6-7 am
along the I-25 Corridor, and 8-9 am on the eastern plains. One
bit of good news is that winds should start to relax by mid to
late afternoon as gradients slowly weaken.

Earth: Given the strength of winds expected and recent dryness,
we've added at least some patchy blowing dust across almost all of
the plains, and increased to areas of blowing dust in some of the
more favored areas and more open agricultural fields on the
northeast plains (e.g. Fort Morgan, Brush, Akron, Limon). It's not
impossible we'll need a Blowing Dust Advisory or even Dust Storm
Warning at some point tomorrow in some spots of the northeast
plains. Whatever the case, dangerous driving conditions may exist,
not just due to strong crosswinds but local blowing dust and
sudden reductions in visibility.

Fire: Strong winds and modestly low humidities will set the stage
for potential rapid wildfire spread along the Front Range and
adjacent plains. See the fire weather discussion below for more
details.

Snow: Very strong orographics will be in place Monday for
continued snow and blowing snow impacts in the mountains. We're
most concerned about the early Monday morning commute as we think
a band of heavier snow will be lingering in the I-70 mountain
Corridor through Summit County, in the left exit region of the
upper level jet. Near whiteout conditions will be possible over
the higher passes at times due to the strength of wind, falling
snow, and considerable blowing of recent snowfall. There was some
consideration to upgrade the I-70 Mountain corridor into a Winter
Storm Warning, but amounts seem to be solidly in the Advisory
camp. Still, with the strength of winds this is something
additional for the day shift to consider a potential upgrade.

For Monday night into Tuesday, winds settle down but a few light snow
showers will linger in the mountains with favorable orographics
but limited moisture. Continued cold advection means a couple
days of below normal temperatures for a change, just in time for
the last day of 2024 and a welcome into the New Year. A few of the
operational and ensemble members are still indicating a slight chance
of snow on the plains Tuesday. But, ensemble systems were still
insisting on one thing with regard to intensity...light. At most a
tenth of an inch of liquid (1.5" of snow) and the vast majority
of runs were still dry.

Where there has been an interesting trend is toward a return of
more significant snow in west/northwest flow starting Wednesday
night or Thursday. There has definitely been an uptick in snowfall
amounts per ensemble averages, and this would be the pattern to do
that in. Thus, it could still stay active which would be a good
thing for getting our snowpack closer to normal in the northern
mountains. Additional shots seem more certain as we head into
next weekend.

Otherwise, there is still reasonable agreement we'll be trending a
little warmer for the end of next week. Models may still be
overdoing the amount of warming though since we'll still be open to
northwest flow and possible backdoor cold fronts. The amount of
warming still depends heavily on the progression of the upper
Great Lakes trough, where ensembles show a fair amount of
uncertainty. Finally, there is now more certainty we'll be
trending colder again late in the weekend and maybe, just maybe, a
little snow for the plains.

.AVIATION /18Z TAFS through 18Z Monday/...

VFR through tonight. Some uncertainty about wind direction at
KDEN/KAPA as it could wind up being variable at speeds under 10
knots for a while this afternoon. More likely still a southerly
component both places. KBJC will likely have southeast winds 5-10
knots this afternoon, but there's potential for west or southwest
winds to spread off the foothills. This will likely happen after
00z, but could come sooner.

Increasing southwest and then west winds are expected overnight.
There's a 20% chance of west winds at 30-40 knots at KDEN for an
hour or two Monday morning (somewhere in the 11z-16z time range)
that could necessitate west all operations. After that, the
direction is expected to be more northwesterly with gusts to
around 40 knots, reducing but not eliminating the west all threat.

.FIRE WEATHER...

Critical fire weather conditions will develop Monday due to
very strong, gusty winds and dry fuels. Humidity levels will stay
above traditional critical thresholds at 15%, but the magnitude
of winds (gusts 45-60+ mph likely across all of the foothills and
plains, locally gusts to ~75 mph near the foothills) and recent
dryness/lack of snow cover means very high or even extreme
grassland fire danger. We have upgraded the Fire Weather Watch to
a Red Flag Warning, and expanded it slightly to include central
and southern Weld County. Latest models have trended drier, so
despite colder temperatures Monday humidities may drop to minimums
near 20% along the I-25 Corridor, with 25-30% in the rest of the
Red Flag Warning areas (e.g. southern Front Range Foothills,
adjacent plains toward Weld and rural Adams, Arapahoe, and Lincoln
Counties). We're still not out of the woods for fire danger
elsewhere, but at least humidities will be a little higher farther
east and a late day moisture surge should help alleviate the
worst of the fire weather conditions over the northeast plains.
Still something to monitor closely given the expected magnitude of
winds.

This hazardous weather outlook is for northeast and north central
Colorado.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

Snow and blowing snow in the northern Colorado mountains will
wind down late this morning into early afternoon. Thus, the
hazardous travel conditions will improve for the afternoon into
the early evening hours. However, another round of heavier snow,
blowing snow, and difficult travel conditions will redevelop in
the mountains by late this evening.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Monday through Saturday

Snow and blowing snow in the northern Colorado mountains will continue
through at least mid day Monday, with continued difficult travel
conditions expected. Conditions are expected to gradually improve
later Monday afternoon or Monday night.

Monday will bring strong and gusty winds to the forecast area.
Winds to 60 mph will be possible across the plains with potential
for higher speeds in the foothills and Urban Corridor. With dry
soils in place from lack of precipitation across the eastern
plains, areas of blowing dust are expected that could impact
travel, mainly from I-25 eastward. Critical fire weather is
expected to develop which could lead to rapid fire spread if one
were to ignite.

Colder temperatures but lighter winds will settle in for Tuesday
and Wednesday, before a gradual warmup occurs later next week.
Light snow showers will still be possible from time to time,
mainly in the mountains.
