Tranquil weather has returned across Central Alabama today, at
least temporarily as we transition between very dynamic weather
systems within a progressive flow aloft. Surface high pressure is
centered over the the northern Gulf Coast, with a southwesterly
flow developing at the surface. A dry and cool airmass has
filtered into the region behind Tuesday's system, with dewpoints
expected to mix down into the upper 20s and lower 30s this
afternoon. 1000-850mb thicknesses are supportive of highs ranging
from the mid 50s south to the upper 40s north. Lows tonight should
be able to dip down into the 30s with radiational cooling and
mostly clear skies. We'll likely see some locations that stay
mixed overnight and some that are able to decouple the boundary
layer and drop below freezing. Gadsden, Jasper, and Haleyville
will likely be some of our colder spots by sunrise on Thursday.
Warming temperatures can be expected during the day on Thursday as
we transition the airmass ahead of the dynamic system that is
expected to arrive on Friday. Southerly to southeasterly flow will
increase Friday afternoon with low level moisture also on the
rise. As dewpoints rise into the 50s across the southwest
counties, warm air advection will also help to warm afternoon
highs into the 60s in most locations. High cirrus clouds are
expected to increase in coverage as upper level southwesterly flow
begins to ramp up as the upper trough axis ejects eastward from
Texas and Oklahoma. Rain chances will remain west of Central
Alabama through the day on Thursday.

.LONG TERM...
(Thursday night through next Tuesday)

A complex and busy weather pattern is in store for the end of this
week through early next week.

First, a trough is expected to quickly move through the region on
Friday. The overall forecast and expectations for this system
haven't changed much from the previous forecast, and the previous
discussion below covers the details very well. Overall, there's a
severe potential for much of the area with the biggest uncertainty
being whether the warm sector will be able to lift far enough north
before being cut-off, and that will determine the northern extent of
the severe threat.

Second, this system is another deepening low pressure, which will
lead to increased gradient winds for much of the day on Friday. Even
for areas that don't see severe weather, strong winds will be
capable of bringing down trees and causing power outages. Winds
could gust 45-50 mph at times for most of the area.

Third, on the backside of this system, very cold air moves into the
area and a secondary trough dips through the Mid-MS Valley on
Monday. Guidance continues to hint at winter precipitation across
our northern counties, especially the northwestern counties Sunday
night into Monday. I've continued with having rain, snow, and sleet
mentioned in the forecast, but have added a low chance of freezing
rain in the northwestern counties for a few hours early Monday
morning. There's still some uncertainty with this, as with any
winter forecast in Central AL, but model trends have been fairly
consistent with showing this potential.

Finally, if the first three punches weren't enough...that secondary
trough brings in an even colder air mass into Central AL Monday
through at least Wednesday morning. Low temperatures Monday night
could be in the teens for much of the area with our northern
counties dropping into single digits. The cold air persists for
several days. It's possible that some of our colder locations in the
north and higher terrain areas remain below freezing for over 48
hours. This is reminiscent of our cold snap around Christmas in
2022. The exact temperature forecast will likely change in coming
days, but confidence is fairly high for dangerously cold
temperatures early next week.

Previous long-term discussion:
(Thursday night through next Tuesday)

Within broad troughing covering much of the CONUS, a potent but
relatively low-amplitude trough will round the base of the large
scale trough Thursday night. It will lift quickly northeastward
with a negative tilt across the Mid-South and northwest Alabama
Friday morning, accompanied by a 120kt mid-level speed max on its
southeastern flank. Lee cyclogenesis will take place in eastern
Colorado Thursday, with the surface low hooking through Oklahoma
into the Ozarks by Friday morning. The surface low will quickly
deepen about 20 mb in 24 hours Thursday night through Friday night
as it lifts northeastward to Michigan. A 70kt pre-frontal 850mb
LLJ will move across Alabama Friday morning. A cold front and
possible pre-frontal trough will move eastward across Alabama on
Friday as a warm front lifts northward. While there are some
similarities to yesterday's system in the track of the low, there
are also some important differences. While there will be a
subtropical impulse over the Gulf, it will be located further to
the east towards the Florida peninsula and probably not be a
factor causing disruptive coastal convection. Also the trough will
be further to the north and negatively tilted, in a placement
typically more favorable for supercells in Central Alabama, with
even global models indicating convection being more cellular.
Elevated convection north of the warm front will also be
developing overtop of the CWA rather than south of it. Thus models
are indicating a narrow but relatively robust warm sector with 62
to 65 dew points lifting northward into at least our southern
counties, with around 500 to 1000 J/kg of SBCAPE.

As is typical, shear will be more than sufficient for organized
storms with 0-6km bulk shear values around 90 kts, though it's
possible that this shear could be too strong if updrafts aren't
strong enough to avoid being sheared apart. The main question will
be how far north the warm front will lift, especially if it will
lift into the area of strongest forcing, and whether storms will
out-run the relatively small warm sector. Will note that while the
500mb shortwave will be lifting quickly northeastward away from
the area by midday, there is still a pronounced 700mb trough to
our west aiding forcing, with some 500mb height falls continuing
through the afternoon. It's also worth noting that some models may
be veering winds too quickly at the surface given the isobaric
response to the deepening low to our northwest. Overall this is a
low floor but relatively high ceiling event, as any supercell that
is able to remain sustained in the warm sector before crossing to
the cool side of the front would have a conditional threat for a
strong tornado. This will be a fast-moving system, with the main
severe threat starting as early as 8am-9am in the west (though
there could be some elevated hail-producing storms as early as
4-6am), and ending by 3-4pm in the east. While I know there is a
lot of chatter regarding whether or not we will see a wintry mix
next week as discussed below, we really need to remain focused on
this severe threat. Will have to keep an eye out for any flooding
with any training storms given the heavier rainfall we just had,
but widespread heavy rainfall is unlikely given the more cellular
convection and progressive nature of the system. Additionally, we
will also need another wind advisory as conditions will once again
remain supportive of gusts to 35 to 45 mph, higher than that at
higher elevations.

Cool and dry conditions are expected over the weekend, before
attention turns to an Arctic air mass approaching from the
northwest. There continues to be a lot of ensemble spread in
solutions, and it is important to not focus on any one
deterministic solution this far out. Some of this spread appears
to be sensitive to a small-scale shortwave coming out of the North
Pacific which will not move onshore over the Pacific Northwest
until Saturday afternoon, and how quickly it shears out as it
interacts with the large trough over the CONUS. This would
impact the amplitude of a potential trough to our west by Monday.
This will impact whether any waves of low pressure slow the
progression of the Arctic front as well as moisture availability
along the Arctic front. With this being a shallow cold air mass
(which models often struggle with), initial frozen precipitation
types if they occur would be more in the form of freezing rain or
sleet, with snow only possible if moisture extends far enough
back in the cold air mass. Keep in mind that model accumulation
maps often aren't very accurate in mixed precip events. Will
mention a chance of a light wintry mix in far northern Central
Alabama in the HWO for the late Sunday night through Monday
timeframe but emphasize that any accumulations or impacts remain
uncertain. Additionally, hard freeze warnings will probably be
needed across at least portions of the area Monday and Tuesday
nights, with wind chills also near advisory criteria in the
northwest counties Tuesday morning.

A VFR forecast is expected for all terminal sites. Light/variable
winds are anticipated generally for the remainder of tonight with
surface ridging affecting AL. During the day Thursday, some S-SE
winds 4-8kts with mixing may occur around the main ridge as the
center nudges EWD from FL and into the Atlantic, but some may
remain light/variable. A low level jet overnight may scrape the NW
part of the state and create some NC-LLWS for TCL/BHM during the
pre-dawn hours,~9-13z. Winds increase Thu evening ahead of our
next weather system.

Severe storms are possible on Friday. Threats include tornadoes, damaging
winds up to 60 mph, and hail up to quarter size. The relatively
highest threat will be south of Interstate 20. Winds outside of
thunderstorms will also gust to 35 to 45 mph.

There is a chance of a light wintry mix late Sunday night and Monday,
mainly in far northern portions of Central Alabama. Any accumulations
or impacts remain uncertain at this time.

A very cold air mass will move in Monday night. Lows below 20 degrees
will be possible Monday and Tuesday nights, with wind chills at or
below zero Tuesday morning in northwestern portions of Central
Alabama.
