- Rain and light freezing rain are expected late tonight through mid
  Sunday morning, becoming mostly rain late Sunday morning.

- A Winter Weather Advisory for freezing rain is in effect for
  north central North Dakota through mid Sunday morning. A
  light glaze to one tenth of an inch of ice could accumulate.

- Light snow accumulations are likely Sunday night through  Monday,
 with 1 to 2 inches west and up to one inch elsewhere.

- Windy conditions expected through Monday. As a result, near
  critical fire weather conditions are possible across the far
  southwest Sunday afternoon. Patchy blowing snow is also
  possible Sunday night through Monday.

- Much cooler temperatures with periodic chances for light snow
  continue through midweek next week.

Based on current observations and trends, we have elected to remove
Burke County from the Winter Weather Advisory. Not only has the
chance of rain lowered, but there is higher confidence that surface
temperatures there will remain above freezing through the night.
This may end up being the same case for much of Renville and Ward
Counties, but there is still enough of an icing risk in eastern
parts of those counties to leave the advisory as is. The rest of the
Winter Weather Advisory has been extended in time to 9 AM CST as
temperatures are unlikely to rise above freezing prior to then.

Some light radar echoes are starting to show up across the
northwest as tonight's shortwave approaches. It is doubtful that
any of these echoes are making their way to the ground yet but
as the wave continues to encroach and ceilings lower, we should
start to see some light rain in the next couple of hours. For
this update, we did tweak precipitation chances a bit based on
the latest observations and short term guidance trends.
Otherwise, no major changes were needed.

Not much has changed regarding our thinking for precipitation
later tonight. Although, CAMs continue to come in a bit warmer.
Still think there is a window for some light freezing rain but
it only may last for an hour or two, mainly across the Turtle
Mountains and vicinity. Will leave headlines as is for now.
Otherwise, just blended in the latest observations to the going
forecast and updated sky cover.

.DISCUSSION...
Issued at 247 PM CST Sat Dec 7 2024

Mostly sunny skies this afternoon as northwest flow continues
over the state. With a thermal ridge at 850mb, temperatures are
well above normal in the 40s and 50s. With these temperatures
and lower humidities, near critical fire weather is possible
this afternoon in the far southwest, and possibly again on
Sunday.

Tonight flow aloft will change as a quick moving clipper system
moves through. This will bring a slight chance (20%) for
freezing rain, mainly in the far north. We reduced it to a
slight chance because the model sounding trend is showing all
warm air except the immediate surface. So rain could freeze on
roads and sidewalks, but there seems to be a lot of warm air.
We issued a Winter Weather Advisory for this reason from
Midnight to 6am for the far north central and portions of
central part of North Dakota. Else where will mostly be light
rain.

On the backside of the clipper, in a tighter pressure gradient,
winds Sunday will be breezy, and again on Monday. Wrap around
moisture could give us one to two inches of snow in the west and
northwest Sunday night through Monday. There's about a 60
percent chance of 1 inch in the west and northwest. For two
inches, this drops to about 25 percent. This combined with the
winds could lead to patchy blowing snow during this time frame.
This clipper wave is part of a larger trough that will keep
North Dakota in northerly flow through the rest of the forecast.
This means that much colder Arctic air will move in. High
temperatures after Monday will be in the teens and 20s, with
overnight lows in the single digits above and below zero. Little
fast moving waves embedded in this northernly flow will create
just enough lift for the overcast skies to produce some light
snow. All accumulations look under an inch. Beyond the forecast
timeframe a flattening ridge could move in, bringing
temperatures back above freezing maybe.

There are multiple aviation hazards across western and central North
Dakota this forecast period. VFR conditions are expected for most
areas through at least midday Sunday, aside from areas to the north
and east of KMOT where low ceilings and light freezing rain are
possible. Light rain with above freezing temperatures is otherwise
possible throughout western and central North Dakota Sunday morning.

Low level wind shear will impact western and south central North
Dakota late tonight through Sunday morning, and also southeast North
Dakota, including KJMS, during the late afternoon and early evening
on Sunday. At the surface, westerly winds are forecast to become
strong across western North Dakota on Sunday, with sustained speeds
around 30 kts and gusts to 45 kts.

Light snow is forecast to spread across the state from northwest to
southeast late Sunday afternoon through Sunday night. The falling
snow combined with strong northwesterly winds will reduce visibility
to at least IFR levels at times. Ceilings are also expected to lower
to MVFR levels.

Light snow is expected to develop this evening through Monday
morning across western and central North Dakota. Combined with
strong northwesterly winds, areas of blowing snow may reduce
visibility to as low as one half mile mainly while snow is
