Active weather into early next week:
Active weather will continue into early next week as a complex storm
system moves into the area. When looking at the upper levels, there
is a low that will move through the intermountain west and into the
Plains on Monday. At this same time, a secondary trough begins to
move down from Canada and by Tuesday these two systems merge
together in the Upper Midwest. The low level jet continues to show
values of 40 to 50kts across the area. A mixture of this low level
jet and strong moisture advection will result in multiple rounds of
precipitation. Guidance continues to have good agreement through
Sunday however, the time period between Sunday evening and Monday
morning is not as good as far agreement goes due to p-type issue.
Other areas of uncertainty include QPF and snow totals, how
strong the system is, and when the changeover from snow to rain
occurs.
Out ahead of these storms will be an area of light snow that will
form from a shortwave trough. Less than an inch of snow is expected
from this first band. After this band moves through, there will be a
lull in the action for the southern half of the forecast area before
the main snow band begins to move into the area some time in the mid
morning hours on Sunday. Snow is expected to continue into the
afternoon before beginning changing over to rain in the southern
portions of the forecast area. There may be a few hours of a mix of
rain and snow during this transitional phase. An area of uncertainty
regarding this part of the forecast is when exactly this transition
occurs. Heavier rates may delay the switch over to rain, however a
changeover to rain will eventually occur. The entire forecast area
will be rain by the time mid-morning occurs on Monday. Due to the
tight pressure gradient and low level jet, there will also be strong
winds, with gusts between 25 and 35mph on Sunday and Monday, so
blowing snow may occur. After all is said and done, there will be a
tight gradient of snow totals across the area, with the highest snow
totals being in the northern and northwestern portions of the
forecast area. For this reason, have decided on a winter storm watch
across portions of west central Wisconsin and southeast
Minnesota. Stay tuned for further updates regarding this storm
as some details may change depending on storm track and thermal
profiles.
Light rain is expected to continue into the early afternoon as the
center of the low begins to move into Iowa. Heading into Monday
afternoon, the shift from wintry weather to some strong to severe
storms comes into play. With the latest update, SPC has issued a
marginal risk for central Iowa and into northeastern Iowa. The rest
of the forecast area remains in a general thunder category. As this
low moves across Iowa, the low level jet will remains in place and
with wind shear values between 25 and 40kts, steep low-level lapse
rates producing upwards of 500J/kg of CAPE, and strong moisture
advection, could lead to low-topped thunderstorms capable of
producing isolated hail, strong winds, and a tornado couldn't be
ruled out.
Heading into Tuesday morning, the low is expected to move past the
forecast area and the flow will switch to northwesterly. This will
leave the door open for some light snow showers on the back end of
the low. Not much is expected in accumulation. All
precipitation chances are expected to end by Tuesday evening as
ridging returns to the area for the remainder of the week.
Guidance continues to show another potential storm next weekend
but it is still too far out to narrow down details.

and a period of light snow tonight. At least MVFR conditions
are likely with this snow, and some potential for a window of
IFR conditions exists. While there may be a lull in snow

is likely late in the TAF period or just beyond with IFR/LIFR
conditions becoming more likely with winds increasing to 10-20
kts gusting 20-30 kts from the southeast.
