Besides the potential for heavy snow, winds will be on the increase, leading to blowing and drifting. There could also be pockets of whiteout conditions, especially in open areas. Currently a broad swath of 6 to 10 inches is forecast, but those amounts could still change based on storm track and amount of moisture the storm has to work on. There is still the possibility for higher amounts if bands move repeatedly over the same areas. Widespread travel impacts should be planned for Friday into Saturday. Near white-out conditions could develop at times Friday into Saturday morning as winds gust upwards of 30 to 40 mph. Consider altering, delaying or even canceling travel plans if conditions warrant it. Bitterly cold air arrives as this storm system exits the area. Early this morning: Snow exiting
Passing short wave and related snow should exit our Wisconsin
counties quickly this morning. Bands of dendritic snow has
produced a fluffy 1 to 2 inches in some areas. This could lead
to some minor, morning commute issues.
Late Tonight thru Saturday: Significant Winter Storm details
Winter has kicked into full gear as we prepare for yet another
larger, dynamic system to close out the week, followed by first
true arctic push of colder air. Still lots of details to work
out with relatively large ranges in possible snowfall outcomes
leading to limited confidence.
As main wave in question rounds base of western trough and ejects
northeast towards the Great Lakes on Friday, lots of dynamics in
play that will lead to impressive cyclogenesis. Based on 11.03z RAP
surface low will deepen from 996 mb near Kansas City tonight to 966
mb over Lake Michigan east of Milwaukee by Friday evening. Hints of
coupled jet streaks across the region as well with divergence aloft
and broad, strong lift as wave becomes negatively tilted and swings
into Great Lakes. To no surprise low level wind field is quite
strong ahead of low advecting moisture into the system as it lifts
northeast, with hints of strong isentropic lift and mid level
frontogenetic banding. In fact, this feature could lead to high
snowfall rates /2"+ per hour/ early Friday morning as forcing lifts
north.
While probabilities still suggest higher snowfall totals could be
across northeast Iowa into the southern half of Wisconsin again,
some of the CAMS data, that is now getting into ensemble outcomes,
hint that deformation area may advect northward and become
orientated more along and just north of Interstate 90. This would
bring higher snowfall totals further north and an overall broader
coverage of warning level snows. Another scenario is dry slot with
such a dynamic system actually gets into southwest Wisconsin leading
to more convective features /do I dare say thunder snow?/ but highly
variable snowfall amounts.
Hoping that snowfall amounts become a bit more clear in the next 12-
18 hours, will be going with fairly broad coverage at this point
with a general 6-9 inch possibility most areas. This storm seems
increasingly difficult to nail down an exact path for the
deformation area and with higher moisture input with convective
features, plus duration, some higher totals are well in the realm of
solutions. After coordination with surrounding forecast offices,
have upgraded some counties where confidence is a bit higher
into warnings. Later upgrades likely in next shift.
Let us not forget about the wind component. As surface low deepens
late Friday, expect increase in low level wind field leading to
periods of blowing and drifting. Strongest winds initially remain
outside our immediate forecast area but by Friday evening, many
areas could be seeing gusts at or above 40 mph leading to some local
whiteout conditions. Moderate to major impacts are likely, mainly to
travel, especially Friday evening. Sporadic power outages possible
as well. Favored areas for blowing would be northeast Iowa and parts
of central Wisconsin.
As snow gradually tapers off Saturday morning, focus shifts to cold
and related wind chills. Advisory level wind chill values /-20 or
lower/ will enter the picture by Saturday night as winds remain up.
Would expect later headlines to address wind chill impacts well into
Sunday.
Looking ahead, area remains in northwest flow with mean upper trough
across eastern Canada and states. While we will probably see periods
of flurries, no larger weather systems in the offing going into next
week with a gradual moderating trend. Still will be seeing below
normal temperatures though, especially with a growing snow pack.

CIGS: IFR/MVFR favored into Thu afternoon as a shortwave trough
swings across the region. Short term guidance showing more agreement
in lifting cigs to VFR toward 00z Fri, although the RAP still
leaning into at last MVFR. Will side with the more optimistic
solutions. MVFR/IFR look to return overnight Thu as the next winter
storm spreads clouds/snow northward.
WX/vsby: upper level shortwave trough is bringing areas of -sn to
the area with CAMS/short term models continue to pull it
east/northeast overnight. Latest trends push the west edge past KRST
before 06z and closer to 08z for KLSE. VSBY restrictions mostly IFR
(1-2sm) with the snow. Roughly around an 1" expected.
Another round of widespread snow starts to move in with a winter
storm mostly over Thu, persisting through Friday night. Several
inches expected with at least 1-2SM vsbys, but likely sub 1SM at
times if current storm track holds (and strong winds realized).
WINDS: swing from light southeast to light northwest overnight. Look
to become more westerly Thu.
Winds are going to be on the increase as we move into Friday as a
potent winter storms tracks southeast of the local area. 30-40 mph
gusts possible Fri afternoon into Sat morning.
