Lake processes slowly becoming a bit better organized this
evening as profiles continue to cool and synoptic moisture
contribution increases. Most organized snow showers remain off
Lake Superior where temperatures are cooler and moisture
depth/convective inversion heights are just a bit deeper.
Expect this slow increase in snow shower organization and
intensity to continue through the overnight...perhaps bringing
an additional inch or two to the snowbelts of Chippewa County.
Expect accumulations to remain under an inch elsewhere.

Pattern Synopsis: Broad cyclonic flow brushing the northern Great
Lakes with weak cold air advection through tonight as core of Arctic
air remains west of the area. An uptick in synoptic moisture later
tonight as a wave slides to our south. Bigger synoptic changes
begin to take shape on Thanksgiving as larger scale troughing begins
to develop across the Great Lakes with deepening northwest flow
ushering in increasing cold air advection. A weak upstream shortwave
will slide into the area for the afternoon hours, resulting in an
uptick in lake effect snow shower activity - especially over eastern
upper Michigan.
Forecast Details: The relative calm before the storm tonight. Intial
weakish west-northwest boundary layer flow increases as upper trough
begins to gradually deepen across the northern lakes with a slight
uptick in synoptic moisture as a wave passes through the Ohio Valley
to our south. Scattered lake effect snow showers will increase in
coverage/intensity overnight. Accumulations still relatively light
with up to 1" in parts of northern lower and 1-3" north of M-28 in
Chippewa County. Lows in the 20s.
Things begin to change on Thanksgiving Day as the longwave trough
begins to be carved out across the Great Lakes with deepening and
strengthening west-northwest flow, with a weaker upstream shortwave
trough pushing across the area. Deepening moisture profiles as the
day progresses, with 850-700mb RH of >80% gradually sliding south
from upper Michigan into northern lower. This shows up on forecast
soundings as well, with inversion heights increasing with more full
moistening of the sounding above the inversion. The best forcing
also begins to nudge into the more favorable DGZ during the
afternoon, especially in eastern upper. Low level convergence
signals during the first half of the day along Lake Superior from
Whitefish Bay westward, with additional low level convergence
signals showing up along Lake Michigan in northwest lower Michigan
by late afternoon/early evening. Strengthening cold air advection
will push delta T's into the mid to upper teens by later in the day.
Ongoing lake effect snow showers during the morning over eastern
upper (especially north of M-28), with activity increasing in
coverage and intensity for the afternoon hours as the deeper
moisture and better LES parameters take shape. South of the bridge,
snow showers will gradually tick up in coverage throughout the day
with the arrival of deeper moisture and colder air aloft.
Accumulations of 2-5" north of M-28 possible in Chippewa County.
Over northwest lower Michigan, generally 1-2" in the favored LES
areas. Highs generally in the lower 30s (some mid 30s along the
coast).

Significant Post Thanksgiving Lake Effect Snow Event...
Little change in extended guidance with continued excellent run to
run model consistency noted. Parts of the region will be dealing
with a significant and prolonged lake effect snow event over the
next few days. West northwest flow favored areas of northern lower
and eastern upper will be under the proverbial snow gun as the first
bout of arctic air streams across the relatively "warm" waters of
the Great Lakes. Lake temperatures are currently running well above
normal by late November standards yielding impressive over lake
instability. As noted yesterday, all the key ingredients for lake
effect snow production remain excellent including abundant moisture
targeting the dendritic growth zone leading to high efficiency
snowflake production. Potential remains for some spots to receive
upwards of a foot or more of snow from Thursday night into this
weekend. Would not be surprised if there were a few three day totals
that exceeded 2 feet! Visibility will likely drop to near zero in
the the most intense bands leading to dangerous travel conditions at
times through the weekend. Activity increases in intensity Thursday
evening and continues through the weekend. Will be issuing a winter
storm watch for Chippewa, Charlevoix, Otsego, Antrim, Kalkaska and
Crawford counties. One thing to keep in mind is that outside of the
lake effect bands (a majority of north central and northeast lower
as well as Mackinac County), not a whole lot of snow accumulation is
expected.
The pattern looks favorable next week for more lake effect snow
along with possible enhancement from Alberta Clippers moving through
the flow. Some guidance suggests the flow may veer more
north/northwesterly as we head into Sunday and Monday which would
shift bands farther west but will remained focused on the medium
range forecast for now. Temperatures will be a few degrees below
normal through the period.
